Chapter 160 After the Disaster (6)

Chapter 160

Ghost Duke slowly opened his eyes. Lately, nothing good had happened the last few times he had opened his eyes, which made him want to escape reality, such as getting up later.

But I think I should just forget it. It seems like someone has expectations of me, and I have to meet those expectations, right?

Thinking this, he revealed a strange smile as he looked at the old man riding a horse in front of him.

"I don't know what part of me the old gentleman has taken a liking to." He tilted his head, his tone unreadable: "Do you want to eat me, or do you simply want to dissect me?"

Although the memory is a bit hazy, I can still roughly recall what methods this guy used to deal with me. Those were truly impressive methods; before I could even utter a word, he subjected me to torture.

Then, even after I had completely lost consciousness, when I woke up again, all my wounds had healed.

"I just want to figure out what you are." Fei turned to look at Ghost Duke sitting there, who looked mocking him.

This puzzled him a bit, and he frowned as he looked at the guy who could still laugh.

"Forget it, it doesn't matter what you look like. I just hope you're an interesting person, at least able to tell a few lame jokes or something." Ghost Duke rested his head on his hand and looked at the old man: "Old man, you look really strange."

"Heh, that's true. But you're also strange." Fei turned to look at him: "How were you able to survive? It shouldn't be possible, it's definitely not something that rebirth should allow."

"Would you believe me if I said this was a gift from the gods?" Ghost Duke looked at him, resting his head on his hand, and said, "I came from another world. Before I came here, a guy dressed in what looked like a bathrobe said he would give me some perks, and I asked for the ability to not die. And so, as you can see."

"You mean God?" Fei frowned. "Is that someone you can see whenever you want?"

"Maybe I'm just incredibly lucky. I've witnessed things that others can only believe in. What? Are you jealous?" Ghost Duke felt a surge of pleasure at seeing his displeasure, and he wanted nothing more than to laugh out loud.

They couldn't get anything from him; they were just useless, practically worthless even in their original world. Even things they might know, like the Earth being round, or other physical laws, were utterly useless here. This place was completely illogical and defied convention; trying to be serious about it would only cause headaches.

But after thinking for a moment, he turned to look at him and said:

"Did you come from outside the box?"

There was a two-second silence in the air. Ghost Duke tilted his head, looking completely bewildered.

"A box?" Ghost Duke hesitated for a moment. Did he mean something like Pandora's Box? But that kind of high-end thing had nothing to do with him.

Fei didn't say much, he just pointed to the sky and then to the ground.

“This box,” he paused, then said, “I said, did you come from another box?”

"Oh, you mean this world is a box?" Ghost Duke slapped his forehead, suddenly realizing what he meant. "But you'll be disappointed, the place I come from is not a box."

"So, you really are from outside?"

“At least call that kind of place another world,” Ghost Duke said, resting his head on his hand. “At least it sounds like a term from a novel.”

......

"Hey, hey, hey, just because of this you let him take Ghost Duke away?" Denos shouted, grabbing Benny's collar despite the possibility of being slashed.

"It's no use telling me. I've already agreed, and he's already left."

“Of course I know! I just wanted someone to vent to.” Denos said, letting go of her hand and slowly leaning back, then bumping into the wall and slumping down against it.

It's just that I'm annoyed; no one can change what has already happened.

Benny waved away the dirt off her clothes and tossed a bag over. Denos caught it, weighed the bag in his hand, and smiled helplessly.

"Really?" He opened it to check the contents, his expression completely betraying him, and he could only shake his head helplessly.

Those were countless magic cores, all of them at least at the Cataclysmic level. There were even magic cores from the Chaos Cataclysm.

“I don’t need it.” Benny shook her head. “I’ve killed all the monsters within a 50-kilometer radius in the past few days. That’s about the amount you can handle now. It’s about time I left.”

As she said this, she slowly sighed.

Denos put the bag aside, looked at her, and asked, "Why?"

"Why what?"

"Why exchange Ghost Duke for the Demon King? No, I should ask, why leave the Demon King behind? If he wants him, can't we just let him take him?" Denos looked at Benedict in confusion: "My lord, I don't understand."

I don't understand; it's the same no matter how you look at it.

For some reason, that guy suddenly went crazy and insisted on taking Ghost Duke back. He even agreed to three conditions from Benny, conditions that directly contradicted his original purpose for coming.

First, he must persuade the benevolent ones not to participate in the war against the demon race. If he fails to persuade them, then Bene will become part of their fighting force.

Secondly, the Benevolent One cannot do anything that would harm Acre's interests; if they fail, then Benny will become hostile to the Church.

Thirdly, the Demon King and the high-ranking priest who committed the crime must remain here; he can only take one Ghost Lord with him.

Aside from Ghost Lord and the supplies he was given, he only had a caravan of horses and carts. He left the city with nothing else.

This left the onlookers, including Denos, completely confused, as they couldn't figure out whose side it was.

“You don’t need to understand, but before you do, this city needs to be rebuilt, and that will require your abilities.” Benedict looked at Denos and said, “Ark told me that you are the most talented person in sorcery he has ever seen.”

“Son, you forgot that suffix. I am the son of a great man, but that only means I am mediocre.” Denos shook his head, looking at Benedict. “I can’t do anything, but even so, I’ve reached the age to retire. My bones are severely corroded, and even now I’m nearing the end of my life. I’ve reached my limit, but I haven’t reached the combat power you care about.”

“That’s because you’re human, and that’s good. Please cherish that.” Benedict said, looking at the dejected Denos. “Do you know how much we envy you?”

"Envious of me?" Denos looked up in surprise, but there was nothing in front of him.

Benny was in a hurry and has already left.

It's been almost a month already. A full month has passed since that great disaster ended.

For the past month, preparations and fortifications have been underway. Although there's only one wall, as long as there's one saint, things can be salvaged. She single-handedly took on all combat-related tasks, leaving no trace of barbarity in her wake.

Moreover, some of the intelligent monsters even had the time to contain them and bring them back to the safe zone. I really don't know how to define these beings who transcend humanity, monsters, and monstrosities. I've heard that within the church, those people are called angels, beyond the mortal realm.

Denos looked at the magic cores in the bag. It wasn't that they were particularly valuable; after all, he wasn't a demon, and to him, these things were no different from statues on a shelf.

After all, I had never seen so many high-level magic cores before, so this was truly an eye-opening experience.

Who knows, maybe one day, Yak will become one of them.

I really don't know if I'll be able to see anything, or if I'll be alive enough to live that long.

Denos stood up, and Nina walked past him from the next room, greeting him.

"We were supposed to go on a date today, but is it really okay for you to chat with other girls before then?" Nina adjusted her sun hat. "Does it look good?"

"It's beautiful," Denos said absentmindedly, looking at the purple magic core in his hand.

"Put down the magic core in your hand before you say that." Nina smiled, as beautiful as a flower.

“You look happy. We’re homeless now.” Denos looked at Nina helplessly, stood up and ruffled her hair. “We’ll be living in this room for a while.”

After Ghost Duke left, the room became Denos and Nina's.

Although it's not appropriate for a man and a woman to be alone in a room, due to the special circumstances, no one wants to waste time on such matters. So, although neither party explicitly agreed, they tacitly consented.

It has been twenty-five days since Ghost Duke left this room. Although he has only just left, he has spent this time recovering from the injuries he sustained in the beating.

For twenty-five days, they chatted almost every night until midnight. They had so much to talk about: both were sorcerers, both had experience working in chaotic regions, both felt sorrow at being human, and both had plans to stay in the city.

Besides, Denos and Nina are a handsome couple; even if they don't become boyfriend and girlfriend directly, they could try dating. They are ordinary humans, so it's better for their love life to follow the conventional path: dating, falling in love, getting married, having children, living their lives, and dying.

This process is fine; there's no need for anything earth-shattering. For human beings, this is sufficient.

He slowly got up, dusted himself off, and straightened his collar.

Today, he bought a suit for his date—a combination of sheepskin and cotton, adorned with beautiful stones. His hair was styled slightly and tied back with a headband. After shaving his beard, his middle-aged appearance completely disappeared. He was now just a slightly tired young man, but still quite handsome.

In contrast, Nina, though wearing glasses due to her studies—large white round-framed glasses—was dressed in a long brown dress, not made of the finest material, but carefully tailored.

Why today? Because some of the infrastructure outside has been restored, and those capable of self-defense should be the first to move out, namely Denos and his group. They will move out tonight, and the empty rooms will be used to store food.

We finally get a chance to come to the safe zone, so of course we have to take a good look around. Otherwise, it would be a waste.

Nina walked in front, and Denos followed behind, as they descended the simple steps built on the city wall.

The bright sunlight shone on me; the sun itself was not visible, but the sky was bright. A light mist hung in the air, merging directly with the dark clouds outside. The entire sky seemed to be cleaved in two, one half white, the other half black. The boundary was distinct.

Looking out, all I could see were wheat fields. The green in the distance was probably potatoes or something similar.

Basically, the only place that can be walked on is the outline in the middle. They carefully walk among the food of the future, walking in this blessed place.

This is paradise, warm and peaceful, where the earth has no concept of scarcity. Food can be grown very, very densely.

And some inedible corpses would be brought in and buried here, beneath the crops. Because this place was considered paradise, even though they were dead, they still hoped to receive a little happiness.

The two walked one after the other, with Denos following behind, watching her long skirt sway behind her.

Although not the type of person I dream of, he is clearly satisfactory. No, or rather, what could I possibly be dissatisfied with? I have already received enough blessings; I am a lucky person.

Denos turned his gaze around, looking at the vast and bountiful land.

Legend has it that long, long ago, before the gods and demons were at war, all of humanity lived on this land.

That was the most beautiful time in legend, when God was not far away, but lived among people. So did the angels.

Back then, demons weren't called demons; they were called angels or something else. Everyone had enough to eat, wear, and keep warm; the gods even created everyone perfectly. They only needed to enjoy themselves all day long.

That lasted for tens of thousands, even millions of years.

Then, in less than a thousand years, it was completely destroyed. The previous civilization was completely lost, and even the survivors lived a precarious existence in a dying world.

The best outcome is to maintain the status quo, and there is absolutely no room for fantasy about the future.

Thinking of this, he remembered his father, and his expression slowly darkened.

Perhaps seeking his mother's approval, he dedicated himself to building the academy after leaving her. And indeed, as he wished, he built a school with the best sorcerer training system in the world.

Then, within a single day, nothing was left. Years of accumulation vanished in an instant.

“What a beautiful place!” Nina suddenly stopped, and Denos stopped as well, following her gaze.

This is a hillside, from which you can see a large safe zone, quiet and peaceful, like a fairyland.

“Yes,” Denos said softly, “it’s a really nice place.”

If someone wanted to vandalize it, this place would probably only last a day...
