Chapter Thirty-Six: Encounters (1)

Chapter Thirty-Six

"Did you go out and bring a cat back?" Denos raised an eyebrow, looking at the little guy sitting on the table licking his paws.

Once you get used to its strange appearance, it's still a very cute cat; at least it won't tip over the plates.

"I thought it looked interesting, so I brought it." Ark lied with a blank expression, a trait that worked best in this situation.

"Hey, hey, hey, are there such amazing creatures here?" Ghost Duke lay on the other side of the table, carefully observing the scales on the cat's neck.

The scales were growing there, distributed at the base of its wings and on a portion of its body. But only partially; beyond that portion lay the cat's furry body.

And then there was the tailed snake. Ghost Duke placed a small piece of butter in front of it, looking at it with some curiosity, but found it was useless; the creature simply wouldn't eat it.

"I don't know, I don't know if there are any similar creatures to this guy, but this is the first time I've seen something like this. It might be a corrupted monster." Ark made up this excuse casually, something that didn't sound believable, which was actually better at diverting attention away from it.

Some things you have to bear yourself, and Ark doesn't want them involved in those unpleasant things.

When it turned its head again, Ghost Duke had already set up a stall and started drawing something, seemingly the cat.

However, in his writing, the cat stands on a cross, and when it gets dark, holy light shines down from the sky, reflecting that light onto its body.

Wow, that's not bad at all. Although it lacks detail, it conveyed the desired effect in a very short time. This guy seems to be quite talented.

Perhaps she learned it from someone?

Who cares? These little bit of entertainment always bring joy. Like how Yak also learned to play the harmonica and some other instruments. These things won't save them from danger, but they allow them to spend their free time more easily.

Lady was drawn to Ghost Duke's painting, which was good, as it gave her time to think about what to do next.

That thing should be in the city. Yak's heart sank slowly, and the thought of it gave him a headache.

That's a monster capable of wiping out the city; even the three high-ranking priests here are somewhat dangerous.

Unless someone from the Central Church comes, if even one of those old monsters who participate in the council actually shows up, then I'll be in big trouble.

For some reason, Ark didn't want to see those guys either.

However, he still had to deal with this troublesome matter, as it concerned a promise and agreement he had made, and since he had made the promise and agreement, he should fulfill it.

Otherwise, what you say will mean nothing.

Yak looked out the window. It was night now, and hardly anyone was asleep. Under the cover of darkness, there were so many things that could be done again.

After all, the unannounced competition is still ongoing until someone captures or kills one of the demons. Only then will peace truly return to this place.

Before that, perhaps only the safe zone could guarantee peace here.

Yak looked at the center of the city and fell into deep thought.

In the middle of the city, there is a city wall. That is called the inner wall.

You can't see inside from the outside because it's surrounded by a barrier, and getting in requires going through a very troublesome check.

After all, it's a safe zone, the most central area of the city, and one of the most precious places in the world.

Perhaps they're hiding inside, but Ark can't think of a way to get in. It's a closed place year-round, and very few people have the authority to move around inside. He doesn't even know them, because those guys probably don't show their faces in public even once a year.

Under these circumstances, even Ark couldn't think of a good way to get in.

Fortunately, finding a bad guy has always been one of Ark's strengths.

After all, bad people always harbor hatred towards the mortal world, which makes things much easier.

Yak closed his eyes slightly, then opened them again to look at the entire city.

When malice is made concrete and appears in our field of vision, it really gives people the feeling that the world is not far from destruction, because everywhere seems to be filled with hostility and negative emotions.

There are hardly any good people here. The people in this inn have only reached a peace agreement, which is far from being an alliance.

No one emphasized that word, since everyone knows that reconciliation is simply impossible now.

An explosion suddenly occurred in a corner of the city, and several houses began to burn.

But this didn't even surprise the people here; they were just wondering what had happened there.

Ark glanced at the scene and, based on his intuition and judgment, roughly guessed that it was probably a dispute between Nina and one of the witchers here that led to the explosion.

That guy definitely looks like he just graduated not long ago. He's very skilled and seems to have a deep understanding of sorcery.

But he doesn't seem very capable. Ark thought to himself, that guy is proud of his power, but doesn't seem to care how many enemies he'll make.

Such a personality is really not likable, Ark sighed helplessly. He guessed that Denos hadn't gone to see her for tea after he left. Ark's implication was that Denos should try to get some information out of her, but it seemed to be useless. If Denos chatted with her, he probably wouldn't be able to spark any romance or complete the task of getting information out of her; it would most likely turn into something like an academic seminar back in school.

Yak's mind was wandering when he suddenly felt a little tired.

Perhaps he should take a nap. Yak thought to himself, he had already done enough for the day.

Once there's enough commotion outside, things might take a turn for the better.

Suddenly, Yak remembered something and jumped up from his chair.

"What's wrong?" Denos noticed Ark's subconscious reaction, which usually meant that this guy had made a connection to something.

"If you were a demon, what would you do if you knew that everyone in the city wanted to harm you?" Ark took a deep breath to calm himself down. "Could you please take a look at the inn?"

"Ha, allow me to refuse."

Ark was stunned; it was the first time he had ever heard Denos refuse.

“You said yourself that I’m at the age where I need to settle down, and I’m really bored. This is a great opportunity to strengthen relationships, so I’ll go.” Denos gestured to Ark that it was okay. Then he took a small backpack off the shelf: “It’s so boring that I’m always the one looking after the house.”

......

Nina stretched and looked at the guy propped up on the ground in front of her.

"You look older than me, but you're not all that great." She said sarcastically, sliding her hand through the air. The dirt began to shift, and the guy who had been lying there was flipped up and pinned to the wall next to him.

She spared the other party's life; at least they were on the surface at a truce. If he had actually died, it would have been very troublesome.

However troublesome it was, Nina didn't understand why Hack wanted everyone to unite.

These demon hunters can only handle a handful of monsters; most of them struggle against monsters above level three.

I really don't understand why this guy thinks he's qualified to hunt demons. Shouldn't he at least reach the highest level of demon hunter before trying?

Like that girl named Deedri, Nina always looked down on mercenaries, but that girl was an exception. She was someone who could hunt calamities, which was a dragon, and even a high-ranking priest would have a hard time dealing with it, but she was killed by a mortal.

Although I don't know the details, this is an experience that should be respected.

Right? At least someone at that level should be talking about hunting demons. Won't something that's just a concept in textbooks be taken as baseless and given so many dangerous labels?

Nina grew angrier the more she thought about it, staring at the guys she'd pinned to the wall. Cooperating with them had lowered her own status.

“Nina, we should at least leave now. Church people will be coming to inspect the scene soon.” The raven’s voice rang out behind her.

"Okay, okay, I was just venting my frustrations a little, I don't intend to waste any more time with these guys." Nina looked at the crows behind her and nodded in satisfaction.

She quite admired this new partner; it seemed she had studied under someone for a long time before. They met when she was helping out at a tavern in the city.

But when Huck saw her take down an entire group of troublemakers with just a few moves, he immediately remembered her.

His stealth, tracking, combat skills, archery, and mastery of swords, spears, halberds, and axes are all flawless. He even possesses magical abilities. His medical skills are unparalleled, and he has extensive knowledge in setting traps and assessing situations.

A woman like that is truly a rare find; it's a fucking waste of her talent to be working in a tavern. So I extended an invitation to her.

I thought she would refuse, but she just went back to get her mask and some simple luggage before following me.

This guy seems to have always wanted to join a similar team to start his journey. He just hasn't found the right one yet.

"Speaking of which, why are you wearing a mask?" Nina asked casually. "You look very good, and you don't seem to be trying to hide anything."

This guy wears his mask very casually; sometimes he doesn't even take it off when he sleeps, and sometimes he doesn't wear it even when he's sneaking around. Whether he wears it or not seems to be completely irrelevant to him, and everyone knows who he is.

"I don't know, just like I don't know why my teacher always wears this thing. But you should know that once you get used to something, it's very difficult to change it."

“I understand. Just like how I used to memorize so much material back then, now I habitually memorize the contents of books I read.” Nina gave me a knowing look.

However, she wasn't quite sure if this counted as the same type of habit.

But before she could ask any other questions, a crow suddenly pressed down on her shoulder. As a scholar, her physique wasn't strong enough to withstand such pressure. As a result, she almost fell flat on her face.

But Nina didn't blame her at all, because at the same time she raised her leg and kicked horizontally, hitting the weapon that was flying through the air.

It was a short blade that spun in the air after being kicked in the middle.

Nina's hand touched the ground, and flames rose from the ground, forming a barrier that protected them in the darkness.

Raven flicked her wrist, and a military dagger popped out of her sleeve. She braced herself for a counterattack against the man who was nowhere to be seen.

The creatures that were just pinned to the wall disappeared in the blink of an eye, not because they were particularly skilled, but simply because someone took them away.

That guy was incredibly fast, Nina thought to herself, alarmed. Could he really take those people away in an instant? No doubt about it, it seemed she had stumbled upon a big fish tonight.

Whether she could encounter him was one thing, whether she could defeat him was another. Nina wasn't very confident about her ability to deal with the demon.

However, this did not stop her from chanting incantations. Her teacher had once said something profound: if you don't know what kind of spell to use to deal with the situation, then destroying everything you can see is a limited option.

The burning houses were instantly shattered as the surging black lightning destroyed them like a tidal wave. The tsunami-like energy still churned around them, and anything that dared to show itself would be bombarded relentlessly.

The crow has left the barrier, and the two are not yet at the point where they can coordinate their actions during battle.

Nina didn't care about her; life and death hung in the balance. A moment of distraction would be her death.

She took a metal ball out of her pocket and took a deep breath.

The air seemed to freeze, and her chanting echoed through the streets.

It sounded like the clouds before lightning struck, and everything around them trembled.

Nina spotted the target; the guy had dodged the area bombardment by bouncing on the rooftop.

But he shouldn't be here, because Nina is waiting for his official appearance.

The metal ball slowly bounced from her palm, trying to break free of her grasp. But it failed; it remained firmly held in her hand.

Nina's cloak billowed without wind, her hat was lifted, and her hair danced in the air.

Her entire body was crackling with lightning.

"May the lightning destroy my enemies," Nina prayed softly after finishing her incantation.
