Chapter Ninety-Nine: Transformation (1)

Chapter 99

“Hearing you say that still makes me sad and upset, Ark. I don’t call it becoming smarter; I just realize the gap between myself and the Church.” Apari looked at Ark and said, “In short, I really need some time. That girl’s evolution is only halfway done.”

“I don’t want this evolution to succeed. She’s a normal doll now, the only abnormality is that this child can think independently. I think that’s good.” Ark hesitated for a moment and said, “But it seems like you don’t want that.”

“Oh my, I can feel it!” Apari said with a smile. “As perceptive as ever.”

"You never intended to hide it from the beginning, did you?"

“Hiding from you is too difficult, so I'll just be honest. There are about a hundred tons of gold, and it hasn't been pressed down yet only because it's still somewhat secured on top, plus the mercury. Once I clear out the mercury, the gold will be pressed down. Ark, you have a very strong regenerative ability, so I don't expect to kill you this way.” Apari's smile was like a warm spring breeze: “I've also prepared other killing moves, but I hope you don't know what they are.”

"Are you willing to die with me?"

“Of course, what’s the point of me living if I only have a head left? I’m boring, and I’ve wanted to die for a long time. If it weren’t for all these recent events, I really think I should have died long ago.” Apari paused and said, “Do you know why the demons and the church can’t fight back now?”

"Is the quantity insufficient?"

“Really? Then let me tell you the truth, there are more than twenty Demon Lords on the demon side right now, and I have already reached the level of a Demon Lord. For a while, I even thought that the Church might destroy me at any time. But I have survived until now. This cannot be used as an excuse to let me live until today because I am useful, right?” Apari paused and said, “It is because we do not have a Demon God species, so they do not care how many Demon Lords there are.”

"I'm truly sorry, I was the one who killed the last Demon Seed." "Of course, your ability is truly astonishingly domineering. It's destruction, isn't it?" Apari looked at the mercury around her and said, "The ability to break anything down into nothingness, the power of the Demon God Bassat, the god of destruction and sin. How dangerous, you've got me completely under your thumb. All the methods I can think of are useless against you."

“Even if this place is well hidden, I don’t want you to tell anyone. It would be troublesome if the church found out. Just treat me as a calamity-level humanoid monster.” Ark said softly, “And I’m sorry to disappoint you, but even if I could do it all over again, I would still kill that demon species.”

“Of course, that’s your style. Because that guy killed your companion, right?” Apari looked at Ark’s somewhat angry expression. “It’s rare to see you with anger on your usually expressionless face. Didn’t you say that for someone who can’t die, the life and death of others are nothing to worry about?”

“I did say that, but I’m still angry.” Acton paused and said, “And I meant to say that to you. Please don’t make jokes about my friends. I don’t care if you laugh at me, I’m just a fiercely protective person.”

“Haha, I understand.” Apari looked at Yak and said, “Have you found the reason for your unease?”

"If I had found it, I wouldn't have come here."

"That's because you haven't made any changes. You're like a ship sailing on calm water. You want to find the reason why the calm sea is turning turbulent, but you're unwilling to jump into the water. You're just navigating your ship on the surface. You're unwilling to make some changes, so you can't find the reason that makes you uneasy."

Does this count as a change?

“Creating demons might be something that could shake the Church.” Apari paused and said, “Give me forty minutes, please.”

Yak looked at the girl; she closed her eyes and sighed wearily.

She looks exhausted, which is understandable; she's done far too many things that have drained her energy today. Even though she only has her head to control, she's been constantly busy with all sorts of things.

“If it weren’t for rebelling against the Church, I would like to know the reason for doing this.” Acton paused and asked, “Can you tell me?”

"Can you find a reason for everything you do?" Aparie replied with a smile. When she looked up, the weariness had vanished. "Ark, that's an interesting thing to say. We've all lived to the point where we can't find a reason for our existence anymore. I've become a nihilist. You ask me why? I don't know. I just subconsciously feel that this can change some things."

Do you hate monotony?

"I can't quite put my finger on it, but it just feels a bit strange. Since everything is already destined to be a tragedy, why not choose to do something against the grain? I don't want to live a pathetic life with only one head in the future."

"If the church finds out what you're doing, do you know the consequences?"

“It’s clear, it’ll just be erased. I’ve lived long enough, it doesn’t matter if I die. Ha, ha, Ark, thank you so much.”

Yak paused for a moment, then realized what was happening when he saw her smug look in her eyes. At the same time, he realized his mistake.

"you......"

“It’s so satisfying to see you get your comeuppance. Didn’t I tell you I’m a Demon Lord now? You’re underestimating me.” Apari said, and at the same time, everything around her disappeared. Ark turned his head and looked at the girl hanging on the cross.

That was Lady; she was hung on the cross.

Ark remembered that this person had received evolutionary abilities and could control time and space before. She had accelerated time here, so even though only a few minutes had passed, she had already dragged out the required amount of time.

“Come and take a look, this is the demon that was created.” Apari paused and said, “You finally gave me enough time. If you had tried your best to stop me from the beginning, how could I have had time to use my abilities? Ark, you’ve become soft-hearted. If you had been able to pierce my head with your short sword without hesitation, just like before, then perhaps you could have saved your friend before she was changed.”

Ark didn't speak, but simply watched as Lady fell from the cross. In her hand, she held a strange long spear.

“Oh dear, something seems to be wrong.” Apari’s expression twitched. “It seems that child wants to kill us.”

"Is that Leili?" Ark asked hesitantly.

Apali paused, her expression gradually turning serious.

They finally saw what it was: a sickle, but it looked like it was made of human flesh and blood.

If it weren't for the familiar scent, Ark might not have recognized who it was.

Lady braced herself against the wall, as large sections of the wall collapsed, piecing together to form armor around her body.

"Would you mind if I asked what kind of demon's ability that is?"

“I only obtained this magic mark, I don’t really know much about it. Here it comes.” Apali said softly, as a black longsword materialized from space and landed in Ark’s hand. At the same time, thousands of steel needles surged from all directions; they were extremely sharp weapons, piercing through anything that stood in their way.

However, it was destroyed the moment it touched Lady, and then a huge spear formed in her other hand.

Two enormous weapons wielded in her hands, yet they appeared anything but heavy. With a relentless, impenetrable barrage, Ark could find no opening to exploit.

“Strange ability.” Apari frowned.

"Do you want to create a monster like this?"

"No, at least I would want to be an obedient thing."

“I see, but this thing can’t be called obedient.” Ark twisted his wrist and threw the longsword in his hand. It passed through the gap between the two weapons and pierced through the gap in the armor.

He knew a little about alchemical dolls, and he targeted a crucial point on her body. Theoretically, she shouldn't have been able to move after being damaged.

But the next moment he was hit by a hail of bullets, his armor riddled with hundreds of bullet holes, and the explosion sent a dense barrage of impacts through the armor like raindrops.

Fortunately, the guys in front of her were not afraid of such low-damage attacks.

“It looks like things are out of control.” Apari paused and said, “But in a sense, our plan to create the demon has been completed.”

"You can't really call this a successful work." Ark also landed, looking a bit disheveled, his clothes covered in dust.

However, it was because both of them had their own concerns and were unwilling to launch a full-scale attack; otherwise, the child in front of them would have been eliminated long ago.

......

Lady felt very tired, but couldn't fall asleep.

For no apparent reason, I found myself in a room.

The room was very familiar; it wasn't luxurious, nor was it dilapidated—just an ordinary room. In this room, she lay on the bed, yawning.

It felt like waking up on a perfectly normal morning in my room. Maybe soon someone would be calling me out for breakfast.

Hmm... why do I feel like someone is calling me to eat breakfast?

Who would call me to eat breakfast?

She pondered this question, but suddenly realized she had forgotten why she was in this place in the first place.

This is a very familiar place, that's true, but strangely, I have no idea where I am.

And what I find inexplicably natural is that I'm sitting here with nothing worth thinking about, nothing more than an ordinary day when I wake up.

She held her head, feeling a sharp pain.

It hurts so much, it's unbearable.

She lay in bed with her eyes closed.

I feel so awful, I can't remember anything. Who am I? What did I do? Why am I here?

I really can't remember anything.

"Are you alright?" Suddenly, she heard someone calling her. She opened her eyes and looked at the girl sitting next to her.

She recognized her; this was her younger sister, named Leili.

It's that feeling of suddenly remembering something, without any other reason. It's just that I always knew these things, but inexplicably, I just forgot about them.

Why? Why have I even forgotten who my own sister is?

How strange, what happened to me just now?

"That's really something, you really went all out on me." Riley said with a laugh, "I saw you still laughing when you broke my arm. I don't remember you being this morbid before."

Lady was stunned for a moment, and then a huge fear exploded in her heart.

She remembered, she remembered some fragmented images from before.

It was a scene composed of a torn girl, splattered red flowers, falling white bones, screams, groans, and tears. One could almost see the moonlight over the grave, the sun standing atop the cross, the half-eaten sunset, and blood everywhere.

There were also eyeballs, a nose, arms, and torn lips.

All of the above combined form the scene before you.

She screamed and sat up in bed, quickly retreating to the edge of the bed.

She remembered, remembered how the girl in front of her had broken her, remembered how she had broken the girl in front of her.

Blood, red; bone, white; tears, colorless. The moment those abstract, painting-like memories resurfaced, she felt as if she were being torn apart.

"Calm down."

She heard the familiar voice again, and this time when she turned her head, she saw the guy standing in the doorway. He had a funny little emoticon on his head, wore a slightly worn evening dress, and had a completely expressionless face.

That's Ark; it's as if he just pushed the door open and came in.

"Look who's here!" Riley laughed as she looked at the guy standing there. "You, the living one, shouldn't make the two of us dead envious of things related to life, okay?"

“Actually, the dead are either sitting in their graves or thinking about how to cause trouble.” Acton paused and said, “Which category do you two belong to?”

"I don't know, but let me make this clear first: this is a young girl's boudoir, and we didn't invite you in."

“That was my rudeness, but I don’t think we should use the outside world for conversation.” Ark pushed open the door, and the scene outside came into view.

Lady stared blankly behind him, feeling her whole body grow colder and colder. She wanted to wake up; this must be a nightmare. She was in a nightmare, and she had to wake up quickly. Someone was waiting for her… Was someone really waiting for her to wake up?

She didn't know, she wasn't clear.

It's like not knowing what you are or what you're going to do.
