Chapter Fifty-One: Revenge
Su Xiao cried until late into the night, finally succumbing to the effects of the alcohol and falling asleep sobbing in Xu Bozhou's arms.
Tears still clung to her long eyelashes, like butterfly wings glistening with morning dew.
Her breath carried a faint scent of alcohol, yet she was as soft as a ball of cotton, gently brushing against his shirt.
Xu Bozhou stood frozen, afraid to move, lest he disturb her.
He carefully brushed away the stray hairs clinging to her forehead with his fingertips, and his Adam's apple bobbed again when he touched her warm skin.
This was the first time in many years that he had held her so closely.
The little girl who used to always tiptoe and tug at his tie, whose eyes curved into crescent moons when she smiled.
Now, curled up in his arms, even in his sleep, he frowned, as if he was still aggrieved about the past.
He lowered his head, his nose brushing against the soft hair on the top of her head, smelling the familiar scent of ink mixed with a faint shampoo.
My heart felt like it was soaking in warm water, both sore and swollen, the sound as soft as a sigh:
"I'm sorry, I thought I could climb up quickly..."
The person in his arms suddenly stirred, their small hand unconsciously gripping the hem of his suit jacket, murmuring as if in a dream:
“Xu Bozhou…”
He raised his hand and gently wiped away the remaining tear stains on her cheek with his fingertips.
*
I didn't sober up until noon the next day.
Su Xiao sat up in bed and found that the bandages on her body had been changed and the wounds had been treated.
But she blacks out when she drinks too much, and she can't remember anything that happened after dinner yesterday.
A note written by Xu An was left in the living room:
"Xiaoxiao, Qin Yu and I are off to work. Breakfast is in the microwave, remember to heat it up before you eat!"
At the end, a crooked smiley face was drawn.
Su Xiao held the note in her hand, her heart feeling as if it had been warmed by water.
She left the microwave on while she went to the bathroom for a quick wash.
I figured I had some time off recently, so I thought I'd take the opportunity to look at some houses.
Since Yan Mingshen said he would compensate her, there was no reason for her not to.
Besides, this is what she deserves in the first place.
After washing up, the food was ready.
Su Xiao took a bite casually, then, with her phone in hand, went to the nearest sales office.
Xu Anjia's home is located within the Second Ring Road, where the environment is nice and transportation is convenient.
The salesperson at the sales office was very enthusiastic, and the first property she was shown was a small, fully-furnished villa.
It wasn't close to Yan Mingshen's building, and the decorating style suited her taste.
“Ms. Su, look over here. This is just the right place to create a small studio, just as you requested.”
The salesperson pointed to the study and the small guest bedroom next to it: "If you are staying alone, the master bedroom is on the second floor, and there is also a study there."
"Um."
Su Xiao nodded. The house did meet her requirements, but it was a bit far from Xu An's house.
Just as I was hesitating, a soft voice suddenly came from behind me.
"Miss Su is here to look at apartments too?"
Xia Zhi wore a light-colored trench coat with high heels, looking quite gentle and sweet.
Su Xiao looked away and ignored her.
She really didn't understand, was Xia Zhi someone who didn't have anything important to do?
Why do I have to cling to her like a ghost, following her wherever she goes?
Seeing that she didn't speak, Xia Zhi turned to look at her sales staff.
"How much is this little villa? I'll take it."
Her voice was so soft it was almost sickening; it was obvious she wanted to snatch what Su Xiao had her eye on.
Su Xiao raised her eyes, her gaze completely calm:
"Miss Xia has so much free time, why not spend more time on what you should be doing, instead of always focusing on other people's choices?"
"Other people's choices?"
Xia Zhi covered her mouth and chuckled softly, taking a step closer to Su Xiao, her voice extremely low.
“Miss Su, what Ming Shen needs right now is someone who can help him, not a cripple like you.”
Su Xiao curled her fingers slightly. What she hated most was Xia Zhi, who used other people's pain as gossip.
"Crippled? Miss Xia, do you mean you can't even beat a cripple?"
So what if my hand is injured?
She can still repair paintings and curate exhibitions, and no one will look down on her because of her hand injury.
"you……"
Xia Zhi's face instantly darkened.
As she spoke, she turned to look at the salesperson, then went upstairs to the second floor.
"What are you dawdling for? Take me to see a house."
Su Xiao suppressed her anger and followed.
The two salespeople exchanged a glance, keeping their eyes downcast, and said nothing more.
Xia Zhi wanted to make Su Xiao unhappy, so as soon as she reached the stairwell, she turned around and approached Su Xiao:
"Do you think you've won just by taking over the West Bank? Whether it can even be done is another matter entirely."
She took her hand and placed it on her chest, her eyes filled with determination.
"There's no need for Miss Xia to worry about that."
Su Xiao glanced at her and saw her retreat to the edge, preparing to fake a fall.
Su Xiao didn't tolerate her and decisively kicked the person down the stairs.
Didn't she want to fall? She let her have her way.
She looked at the salesperson who was completely terrified beside her and laughed.
"Call 120."
Fortunately, the stairs were covered with a carpet and weren't very high, so Xia Zhi didn't suffer any serious injuries when she rolled down.
*
Yan Mingshen practically barged into the ward with his men.
Xia Zhi lay face down on the hospital bed, half of her face scraped and bruised.
As soon as she saw him come in, she shrank into his arms, her voice trembling.
She was genuinely terrified this time.
She never expected that Su Xiao, who had always been submissive, would actually dare to push her downstairs.
Fortunately, the stairs weren't too high, otherwise who knows what might have happened.
“Ming Shen… Su Xiao went too far, she clearly knew I…”
Before he could finish speaking, Yan Mingshen frowned.
Since returning to China, she has been slandering Su Xiao in various ways, and he really doesn't know how to believe her.
Even when he received the call just now, his first reaction was not to feel sorry for Xia Zhi, but to worry about whether Su Xiao had been wronged.
Ultimately, Xia Zhi was his savior, and he had suffered so much injustice because of her.
He was truly heartbroken.
"Don't cry."
He held Xia Zhi's shoulder, his tone carrying a perfunctory tone that he himself didn't even realize.
"I'll go ask her."
Before Xia Zhi could say anything more, Yan Mingshen turned and left the ward.
As soon as I reached the corner of the corridor, I saw Su Xiao leaning against the wall, looking down at the grout lines in the floor tiles.
She was wearing a simple black sweatshirt, and her slender wrists, which were exposed, were wrapped with a small bandage.
She was completely different from the little girl in my memory who always wore light-colored dresses and called out "Yan Mingshen" behind him.
"What happened?"
Yan Mingshen walked over, his voice carrying a barely perceptible tension.
He thought she would explain to him as she had done countless times before, but after a few seconds, he only heard Su Xiao chuckle softly.
She looked up, her eyes devoid of warmth, as if covered by a thin layer of ice.
"Yan Mingshen, are you here to interrogate me?"
