Chapter 231 How much dowry did your mother prepare for you?
Lin Xi smiled and nodded at Bai Tiantian, "Tiantian, you're amazing, he's my cousin."
"My goodness, this world is truly a vast network," Bai Tiantian exclaimed. "Xixi, you've single-handedly entangled so many people together."
Lin Xi glanced at the people around him; it was indeed a complex and intertwined web that had brought them together.
Things will get better and better.
...
Zhou Jingming was so busy with Zhou Ruolan's affairs these past two days that he almost forgot about Jiang Yan's matter. After remembering her, he quickly found information about Jiang Yan's father.
Jiang Yan's father also started a small company and made a lot of money. Not long after divorcing Jiang's mother, he remarried and had another daughter.
About ten years ago, Jiang Yan's father was in a car accident and broke his leg. His company went bankrupt because of the accident and lost a lot of money.
They sold their house and car in an upscale neighborhood and moved to an older neighborhood with lower housing prices.
The family's income now comes from the wife's daily snack stall.
Life is really tough!
After reading it, Zhou Jingming sent a message to Jiang Yan, telling her that he had found her biological father's address.
Jiang Yan was somewhat excited after receiving the news. She longed for her parents' love and care. She had completely lost heart with her mother and wondered if her father would care about her at all.
Jingming, I'd like to go check on him after work.
"Okay, I'll pick you up after work and then take you there to have a look," Zhou Jingming replied.
Jiang Yan didn't know how she got through the day; she was so excited she could hardly see anything.
As soon as it was time to leave work, she changed her clothes, picked up her bag, and walked out.
Zhou Jingming was already waiting at the courthouse entrance. When he saw Jiang Yan come out, he honked his horn.
Jiang Yan had already seen Zhou Jingming's car. She jogged over and opened the passenger door.
After Jiang Yan sat down, Zhou Jingming helped her fasten her seatbelt and stole a kiss.
"Honey, I miss you."
Jiang Yan rolled her eyes at him, "We're together every day now."
"If I could, I'd want to be with you 24/7." Zhou Jingming kissed Jiang Yan again.
After the two registered their marriage, Zhou Jingming stayed up every night, as if he wanted to make up for all the things he had missed over the years.
Jiang Yan blushed as she thought about the scene every night. She nudged Zhou Jingming and asked, "Let's drive. Where does my dad live?"
When his father-in-law was mentioned, Zhou Jingming became serious and told him what he knew: "Your father remarried not long after his divorce. You also have a half-sister who is nineteen years old and in college."
"Your father was in a car accident ten years ago, and his current financial situation is not very good."
Jiang Yan had heard her mother mention her father's car accident, but she didn't know she had a younger sister.
"Let's go and see first." She decided to wait until they met to discuss everything, unsure of her father's attitude towards her.
Half an hour later, Zhou Jingming drove into an old residential area. It was called a residential area, but it only had four or five buildings and didn't even have a gate.
The seven-story building has narrow staircases, only wide enough for one person to walk at a time.
Jiang Yan's father lived on the top floor. When they reached the seventh floor, Zhou Jingming was fine, but Jiang Yan was already panting heavily.
Jiang Yan took five minutes to catch her breath before her breathing calmed down, and a layer of sweat appeared on her forehead.
Zhou Jingming took out a handkerchief to wipe her sweat, saying, "Wife, your stamina isn't very good. You need to exercise more."
"How do I exercise?" Jiang Yan asked, slightly out of breath, as she had no time to work out at all.
"I'll take you for a workout tonight," Zhou Jingming said, looking at Jiang Yan with a smile in his eyes.
Jiang Yan quickly realized what he meant, "Indecent."
She glanced at the three households on the seventh floor. The two households on the left and right had newly replaced security doors, while the one in the middle still had the old tin door.
"Jingming, which household do my dad and his family belong to?"
Zhou Jingming pointed to the door in the middle, "It should be this one."
Jiang Yan frowned. She knew her father didn't have much money, but she didn't expect him to live in such a place.
Zhou Jingming walked over and knocked on the door. Jiang Yan stood behind him, very nervous to see her father again after twenty years.
"Who is it?" came the voice of a middle-aged man from inside.
"Excuse me, is this family surnamed Jiang?" Zhou Jingming asked.
Zhou Jingming and Jiang Yan waited a few minutes before the door opened from the inside. A man leaning on crutches stood in the doorway. "Who are you looking for?"
"Are you surnamed Jiang? Jiang Hongbo?" Zhou Jingming asked.
The man sized Zhou Jingming up and down. "What do you want with him?"
Jiang Yan peeked out and looked at the man; the face in front of her slowly overlapped with the face in her memory.
My father's face didn't seem to have changed much, except for a few more deep wrinkles and a lot more white hair at his temples.
Jiang Yan's gaze moved downwards. Between the two crutches, there was only one leg; the other leg was hollow from the knee down.
Her eyes welled up with tears. She stepped out from behind Zhou Jingming, her lips trembling. "I am Jiang Yan."
Jiang Hongbo's eyes widened as he stared intently at Jiang Yan's face. He opened his mouth, "Yan Yan? Are you really Yan Yan?"
Jiang Yan nodded. "I just wanted to come and see you."
"Yan Yan, come in quickly," Jiang Hongbo said, stepping aside with his cane. "Come on!"
Zhou Jingming pulled Jiang Yan into the house, a one-bedroom apartment that could be seen from one end to the other at a glance.
The house wasn't big, but it was very clean. There was no sofa in the living room, but instead a single bed, a study desk, and two folding chairs.
"Yan Yan, please sit down." Jiang Hongbo asked them to sit on the folding chairs, while he placed his cane aside and sat on a backless plastic stool.
Jiang Hongbo's eyes never left Jiang Yan. His eldest daughter, whom he had longed for for twenty years, had suddenly appeared in front of him, and he was momentarily stunned.
"Why don't you sit in this chair?" Zhou Jingming said, standing up.
Jiang Hongbo finally noticed that there was still someone there. He waved his hand and said, "You sit down. I'm used to sitting on this stool."
He glanced at Zhou Jingming a few more times and asked, "Yan Yan, what's your relationship with this young man?"
Jiang Yan raised her eyes. "He is my lover, his name is Zhou Jingming."
"Oh," Jiang Hongbo said in surprise, "You're married?"
"We just got our marriage certificate, and we haven't had the wedding yet," Jiang Yan replied.
"I see," Jiang Hongbo's gaze shifted between the two, and he nodded. "They look quite well-matched."
Jiang Hongbo frowned. "Yan Yan, Dad didn't know you were getting married. I don't have much money on hand. When your aunt comes back, I'll discuss it with her and try to add some dowry for you."
How much dowry did your mother prepare for you?
Jiang Yan was taken aback. How did the topic suddenly turn to dowry? She clasped her hands together and said in a low voice, "She didn't give me a single penny, not even a word of blessing."
