Chapter 85 I'll curse you to death!
"Sell it to an old bachelor?" Song Xu's gaze turned sinister as if he had thought of something. Could it be what he was thinking?
“They discussed the price in front of me, assuming I couldn’t understand anything,” Lin Xi said with a wry smile. “I really didn’t understand much at the time; all I knew was that my parents wanted to sell me.”
“But the way that old bachelor looked at me was terrifying,” Lin Xi suddenly grabbed Song Xu’s clothes. “At that moment, there was only one voice in my mind telling me to escape, that I absolutely could not be sold to that old bachelor.”
"Looking back now, I think it was the right thing to run away. That old bachelor's eyes were full of lust, animalistic desire!"
When Lin Xi first came to live with Grandma Lin, she often had nightmares, always dreaming that the old bachelor was looking at her with a pair of devilish eyes. She has only gotten better in the last two or three years and doesn't have nightmares as often anymore.
Song Xu hugged Lin Xi tightly, "I don't want to think about it anymore, it's all in the past."
Lin Xi nodded. "My life got better after I left them. My brother took me in. My grandmother only had a meager pension, but she still took me in."
"So you were adopted." Song Xu chuckled self-deprecatingly, then all the kinship tests he did before were for nothing.
Lin Xi felt much better after revealing the secret she had kept hidden in her heart. She wiped away her tears and said, "Grandma doesn't know any of this. I lied to her and my brother. I told them I was an orphan who begged for food here."
She didn't know why she said these things to Song Xu. Perhaps these things had been weighing on her mind for too long, and she was finally letting them all out today.
"You have an older brother?" Song Xu felt a weight on his heart. He was afraid to hear the answer, yet he also wanted to know the truth. "How come I've never seen him?"
“He’s lost,” Lin Xi covered her face with her hands. “He disappeared twelve years ago, so now it’s just my grandmother and me left to depend on each other.”
Twelve years ago, Song Xu closed his eyes, and the timeline matched up.
Perhaps he should have Grandma Lin and his brother undergo a kinship test; that would be more reliable.
“Okay, no overtime today,” Song Xu pulled Lin Xi up. “Let’s go eat first, then buy a new phone.”
Lin Xi was still covering her face. After calming down, she felt that she had embarrassed herself in front of Song Xu.
Song Xu took the SIM card out of the broken phone and put it away.
She pulled out several more tissues and wiped Lin Xi's face and snot, saying, "Xi Xi, you're disgusting. Your snot and tears are all over me."
Lin Xi glanced at it and muttered under her breath, "You climbed up here on your own."
Don't make her pay for the clothes; she can't afford to. But she can wash them for him.
"What a heartless little thing." Song Xu was angered by Lin Xi again.
Lin Xi took out a few tissues and helped him wipe his clothes. "It'll be fine after wiping it off. I'll wash it for you when we get home tonight."
"Hmph, that's more like it." Song Xu put his hands on his hips and looked at Lin Xi's actions, feeling quite warm and cozy.
Song Xu put aside his work at the company, packed his laptop into his bag, and prepared to take it home to work on it.
After getting in the car, Song Xu fastened his seatbelt and asked Lin Xi, "What do you want to eat?"
"Why don't we go back? I'll cook for you." Lin Xi also serves as a nanny, so she can't just freeload all the time.
“You’re in a bad mood today, so I won’t let you do it. I’ll treat you to dinner, it’ll be a staff meal,” Song Xu stepped on the gas. “If you like spicy food, then let’s go to a Sichuan restaurant.”
Lin Xi felt embarrassed. They had hot pot for lunch and Sichuan cuisine for dinner. None of the restaurants Song Xu found were cheap. They were going to spend several thousand yuan on food in one day. It was really expensive.
"Then I don't need my secretary's salary, since I didn't do anything today anyway."
“You were really generous today,” Song Xu teased. “That’s several hundred.”
"Then just settle the bill for me normally." Lin Xi regretted her words as soon as she finished speaking. It was several hundred yuan. How many pieces of cardboard would she have to collect to earn that? She still owed hundreds of thousands of yuan in debt.
Song Xu smiled but remained silent; Lin Xi's emotions recovered very quickly.
He remembered a restaurant that made pretty good boiled fish, which Lin Xi would probably like.
Lin Xi really liked it; the smell of the numbing and spicy aroma instantly lifted her spirits.
Besides the signature boiled fish, Song Xu also ordered a few other dishes that weren't too spicy.
"Want some beer?" Song Xu asked tentatively.
Lin Xi wanted to drink, but was afraid of embarrassing herself again. "Are you afraid I'll drink too much and cause you more trouble?"
“A good drink can wash away a thousand sorrows,” Song Xu smiled slightly. “Do whatever you want. I won’t blame you no matter what happens today.”
"Alright then," Lin Xi gestured with her fingers, "I'll just have a little bit."
Song Xu ordered fruit-flavored draft beer for Lin Xi, which tasted like a beverage and had little to no alcohol taste.
Lin Xi took a sip; it was pineapple-flavored beer. "Is this really beer, or a soft drink?"
"Beer is a type of beverage, and this one has a low alcohol content, so you can drink more." Song Xu poured himself a glass of yogurt. He still had to drive, so he couldn't drink alcohol tonight.
"This is boiled fish!" Lin Xi said, having tried it for the first time. "It's so delicious! I must learn how to make it so I can cook it myself in the future."
Song Xu looked at Lin Xi with affection. This girl had suffered too much in the past, and this was the first time she had ever eaten such ordinary food.
His phone suddenly rang; it was Shen Yan calling.
"Hello, what's wrong?" Song Xu asked in a deep voice after answering the phone.
It's really annoying to be interrupted while having dinner with my girlfriend.
"Brother Xu, are you with your wife?" Shen Yan asked urgently.
Was this a question for Lin Xi? Song Xu hummed in agreement. "What's the problem?"
"No problem, no problem," Shen Yan seemed relieved on the other end of the line. "Is my sister-in-law alright?"
"Are you sure you're not concerned about the wrong person?" Song Xu was annoyed. Why was Shen Yan showing concern for Lin Xi for no reason? Did he have feelings for Lin Xi?
“Brother Xu, you’ve misunderstood,” Shen Yan quickly explained. “It’s because Bai Tiantian couldn’t get in touch with your sister-in-law, and she didn’t have your phone number, so she came to me and Xiao Heng and insisted that we call you to ask.”
Song Xu glanced at Lin Xi across from him, who was eating happily. "She's fine. You two are just idling around anyway, so find all those people who are gossiping."
"Yes, ma'am!" Shen Yan hung up the phone.
"So, so, are Xixi and Song Xu together?" Bai Tiantian asked eagerly from the side.
Shen Yan nodded, "We're together. Brother Xu said she's fine."
"Then why can't I get through to her phone?" Bai Tiantian was terrified. When she sent the message to Lin Xi, the post wasn't as harsh as it seemed.
When she looked at it again, the comments under the post were getting increasingly outrageous, which infuriated her.
She wanted to comfort Lin Xi, but found that Lin Xi wasn't replying to her messages and couldn't be reached by phone.
Bai Tiantian was terrified, worried that Lin Xi might do something rash.
She thought of Shen Yan and Xiao Heng, and after contacting them, she discovered that she lived in the same community and the same building as them.
Bai Tiantian rushed over without a second thought, watching Shen Yan call Song Xu.
Knowing that Lin Xi was alright, Bai Tiantian breathed a sigh of relief. She opened the forum, found the post, and began to rant, "These bastards, I'll curse you to death!"
