Zhang Ping'an, Cheng Fei, and another man who hadn't spoken were the ones catching fish in the river.
At this time, few people dared to go into the river to catch fish, so the fish in the river were a bit silly. The three of them caught nine fish in no time.
Qiu Meifang put Mei Jian down and, with the other two women, began to scale the fish and clean out its internal organs.
Xu Ming had already lit the fire and was waiting on the side.
As soon as the fish was grilled, Xu Ming took one, and Xu Liang took the second one and handed it to Mei Si.
“I don’t eat fish, it’s too fishy.” Mei Si shook her head; she simply couldn’t stand the fishy smell.
"Try this, it tastes so good when it's freshly killed, not fishy at all, it's so fresh!" Xu Liang stuffed the fish into Mei Si's hand, insisting that she try it.
"He's complaining even though he has food to eat," Zhang Ping'an muttered, rolling his eyes.
Mei Si was indeed quite tempted by the aroma of the fish, but she still remembered the fishy smell of the first time she ate fish. Mei Si hesitated to take a bite of the fish in her hand.
"Try it, look how much they're enjoying it!" Xu Liang said, pointing at the crowd.
Mei Si glanced at the others and saw that they were eating the fish quite quickly, so she figured the fish must taste pretty good.
"Sister, eat." Mei Jian saw that he had been looking at Qiu Meifang for a long time, but Qiu Meifang hadn't given him a single bite to eat. He immediately realized that he still had to ask his older sister for food.
"Mom won't let you eat fish because it has bones."
“Here, Jianjian, this piece is boneless.” Xu Liang very conscientiously picked off a piece from the belly of his grilled fish and fed it to Mei Jian.
"Thank you, brother." Mei Jian ran up to Xu Liang and took the fish that Xu Liang handed him.
Mei Si opened her mouth and took a small bite, intending to spit it out quickly if she couldn't stand the taste.
Meisi: Wow! This is delicious! It tastes different from the fish I had last time!
Meis took a big bite, and then... tragedy struck.
Meisi: Why are fish bones so thin?
"Hahaha..." Zhang Ping'an laughed so hard he almost choked while Mei Si was pulling out fish bones.
"Boss, be careful, there are a lot of fish bones in this fish." Xu Liang said helplessly as he helped Mei Si remove the fish bones.
Mei Si looked at the fish in her hand, wanting to eat it but not wanting to. The fish bones were numerous and fine, making it too difficult to eat.
Mei Jian wasn't hungry at all. After eating a few bites, he ran to find Qiu Meifang. Seeing that she was still eating fish, Mei Jian reluctantly left.
"Sister, hug me~!" Mei Jian walked up to Mei Si and asked for a hug.
“What’s the point of having long legs? I’m not hugging you!” Mei Si said seriously, looking at Mei Jian.
"Hey! Go and collect some more wood." Cheng Fei patted his half-full stomach, planning to catch a few more fish to grill.
However, before he went into the river, someone had to gather some firewood to put out the fire. Cheng Fei felt that the only one among these people who hadn't contributed anything was Mei Si, not counting Xu Liang, who was the eldest brother.
"Me?" Mei Si looked around and realized that the only people in this direction were Mei Jian and Mei Si.
“Yes, go and gather some firewood.” Cheng Fei said, standing up and walking towards the river.
"Boss, I'll go get some firewood, you eat the fish." Xu Liang quickly stood up, intending to go collect the firewood himself.
"I'm not eating it, there are too many bones. I'm going to gather firewood." Mei Si put the fish on a leaf and walked straight into the woods.
Xu Liang felt uneasy, thinking that Fei Ge didn't take him seriously at all. He knew that Mei Si was his boss, yet he still ordered Mei Si to collect firewood.
Mei Si didn't think much of it; after all, it was normal to help gather firewood after eating someone else's fish.
Once inside the woods, Mei Jian, being a short person, kept tripping over branches and weeds. After falling down again, Mei Jian refused to get up no matter what.
"Waaaaah... Sister, it hurts~! Hug me!" Mei Jian kicked his legs and acted spoiled while reaching out to Mei Si for a hug.
"Hold it back!" Mei Si frowned as she looked at Mei Jian, feeling that he was getting further and further away from the kind of man who wouldn't cry that Mei's mother had described.
"Boss, should I carry him?" Xu Liang felt it was really too much trouble for him to let one-year-old Mei Jian go into the woods with them.
"You can't always hold him; you need to break his habit of always wanting to be held."
“But with his short legs, it’s no wonder he falls in the woods,” Xu Liang said, pointing to the tall weeds that were almost as tall as Mei Jian.
“…Let me hug you.” Mei Si looked at Mei Jian’s height and then thought that human children are very fragile, so she reluctantly agreed to Xu Liang’s suggestion.
Mei Jian actually wanted his sister to hug him more. He stole a glance at his sister, who had a long face, and knew he couldn't play games anymore.
Mei Jian pouted and reached out her hand to Xu Liang; it was better to have someone carry her than to walk on her own.
Mei Si picked up enough branches and headed back. Xu Liang, who wanted to help, could only watch helplessly because of Mei Jian in his hand.
After returning, Mei Si threw down the tree branch and took Mei Jian's hand, intending to leave.
"Why are you leaving now? Let's play a little longer." Xu Liang rarely saw Mei Si and wanted to spend more time with her.
"We have to go back." Mei Si waved to Xu Liang and then pulled Mei Jian, who didn't want to leave, towards home.
Mei Jian kept looking back at Qiu Meifang, hoping she would wave goodbye to him, but she didn't even spare him a glance.
These past few days, Mei Si has been thinking about how to train Mei Jian. Mei Jian is too young, and he can't understand many of the things Mei Si says, making communication a problem, and training is even more difficult.
"Erhu, don't you dare pick up things from the ground and eat them! If you eat them again, I'll beat you to death!"
"Woof woof!" Erhu really wanted to eat that bone, but why wouldn't his master let him? He was so anxious!
The sound of a neighbor training their dog came from the next yard again.
Mei Si's eyes suddenly lit up. She ran straight to the woodpile and climbed up in a few swift movements.
Mei Si sat on the woodpile, leaning against the courtyard wall, watching her neighbor train the dog.
