Chapter 425 The Child is Missing

Chapter 425 The Child is Missing

But the familiar and anxious voice outside the door was like a ray of light, penetrating through layers of pain and reaching her heart.

She clutched the bed sheet beneath her, using up her last bit of strength.

I don’t know how long it took, but when Chi Wenyan was almost in despair, a loud baby cry suddenly broke the silence.

The cry, like the sound of nature, instantly struck Chi Wenyan's numb nerves. He shuddered, stood stiffly in place, his eyes reddening uncontrollably.

The door opened.

A nurse came out holding the swaddling clothes, with a professional smile on her face: "Congratulations, Mr. Chi, mother and child are safe, it's a little boy."

Chi Wenyan looked past the child and straight into the door, his voice very dry: "My wife... How is Wanwan?"

"The mother is very exhausted and a little tired, but her condition is stable." The doctor came out and took off his mask. "It's just that the baby is premature and needs to be kept in an incubator for a while. Don't worry, we will do our best to take care of him."

Chi Wenyan nodded, his body swaying as if he had exhausted all his strength. He did not immediately look at the wrinkled little guy, but instead made a hoarse request.

"Can I go in and see her?"

After getting permission, he almost stumbled into the delivery room.

Ji Wan lay on the bed, his face as pale as paper. He was so exhausted that he didn't even have the strength to lift his eyelids.

Chi Wenyan rushed to the bed, knelt on one knee, and carefully held her cold hand. The hot tears finally burst out and fell on the back of her hand.

"Wanwan..." He choked with sobs, thousands of words stuck in his throat, and in the end, he only whispered over and over again, "I'm sorry... I'm sorry..."

Ji Wan moved his fingers weakly, as if in response.

Chi Wenyan leaned over, gently resting his forehead against hers, his voice low and solemn: "Thank you, Wanwan. You've worked hard."

He stayed by the bedside, never leaving. When the nurse came to examine Ji Wan, he nervously watched every detail.

When the doctor came to give instructions, he listened more intently than in any business negotiation. As for his newborn son, he only glanced at him from a distance through the incubator.

After confirming that he was safe, the man focused all his attention on Ji Wan.

Feeding water, wiping sweat, massaging swollen calves... He did all this clumsily but very seriously, as if he wanted to pour all the heartache and guilt accumulated during this day and night into this meticulous care.

In his world, the only person left now was the woman in front of him who had gone through so many hardships for him.

Ji Wan lay in bed for two days. She still felt weak, but the worry for her child in her heart became increasingly clear, like a dense vine entwining her thoughts.

Chi Wenyan stayed with her every step of the way. His gentleness and consideration made her feel at ease, but her longing for her newborn child could not be completely soothed.

She remembered that during her pregnancy, the doctor had mentioned that the child would have a small, light blue birthmark on the side of his buttocks, with a unique shape. It was a tiny but unique mark between her and the child, besides the blood connection.

In the early morning of the third day, while Chi Wenyan was lying on the bed with his eyes closed for a short while, Ji Wan supported his sore body and got out of bed quietly.

Every step she took pulled at the wound, causing a slight sting, but she gritted her teeth, held onto the wall, and moved step by step towards the nursery.

The hallway was deserted, the lights dim. She found the incubator room and, through the thick glass, spotted the small figure. The nurse wasn't around, and the only sounds in the room were the gentle hum of the equipment.

The little guy was sleeping soundly, his face wrinkled, and it was hard to tell who he looked like. Ji Wan's heart softened instantly, and her eyes greedily traced his outline. She tapped lightly on the glass, trying to get his attention, but he didn't respond.

Her gaze slowly moved downwards, landing on the skin exposed from the edge of the swaddling clothes that wrapped him. She held her breath, carefully searching for the light blue mark in her memory.

No.

There was nothing on the smooth skin.

Ji Wan's heart sank suddenly, and a chill ran up from her feet to her head. She leaned close to the glass, her eyes wide open, almost seeing through the skin.

Impossible, she remembered it clearly.

The doctor smiled and said that the location and shape of this birthmark were rare.

Cold sweat instantly soaked her back. A terrible thought flooded into her mind uncontrollably, making her whole body cold and her blood freeze.

This is not her child.

A huge panic seized her, making her almost unable to stand. She held on to the cold wall, gasping for breath, her chest heaving violently.

No, I must tell Chi Wenyan immediately.

She turned around, ignoring her physical discomfort, and almost stumbled back to the ward.

"Wen Yan, Chi Wen Yan."

The moment she pushed open the door, her voice was trembling with incredible urgency.

Chi Wenyan, who was lying on the bed, suddenly woke up. Seeing Ji Wan standing at the door with a pale face and eyes full of fear, he immediately jumped up and rushed over to support her shaky body: "Wanwan. Why did you get out of bed? Are you feeling unwell?"

"It's not me..." Ji Wan grabbed his arm, his nails almost digging into his flesh, his voice sharp and urgent, "The child, our child, there's something wrong with him."

Chi Wenyan's heart tightened. Seeing her distraught appearance, an ominous premonition enveloped his heart: "Wanwan, don't be anxious. Tell me slowly. What's wrong with the child? Didn't the doctor say that the condition is stable?"

"The birthmark, the birthmark is gone," Ji Wan shook his head vigorously, tears welling up in his eyes, his voice filled with fear and certainty. "I just went to see him, and he doesn't have that birthmark. Wen Yan, that's not our child. Something must have happened."

Chi Wenyan's pupils suddenly contracted. Ji Wan's decisive tone and panic-stricken expression made him instantly understand the seriousness of the matter.

He didn't have time to think about it, and there was no need to ask any more questions. Ji Wan's reaction said it all.

He suddenly hugged her tightly, feeling her body trembling, and a surge of anger and fear swept over him.

He lowered his head, looking at Ji Wan's tearful face, his voice as cold as ice, carrying an unquestionable command.

"Don't be afraid, Wanwan, I'm here." He quickly took out his phone and dialed a number. His tone was cold, "Immediately, seal off all exits of the hospital. No one is allowed to enter or leave. Yes, no one, right now."

The moment Chi Wenyan hung up the phone, the atmosphere in the entire hospital suddenly became tense. The biting coldness emanating from his body caused the temperature in the ward to drop by a few degrees.

Ji Wan held his arm tightly, her body still shaking uncontrollably, tears blurred her vision, but her eyes were unusually firm.

"Wen Yan, it's true. I wasn't mistaken. The child doesn't have a birthmark."
