Chapter Fifty-Nine: Explaining the Misunderstanding
"Huang Yanyan, why did you tell Chu Zhen everything?" I called Huang Yanyan as soon as I came downstairs. She really is a big mouth. "What? I'm in a meeting!"
"What kind of meeting is this? Stop making excuses. Why did you tell Chu Zhen that I was hospitalized because of him? Why did you tell him about my blind date?" I questioned.
"Alright, let's adjourn the meeting for today!" I heard Huang Yanyan's voice on the other end of the phone. "Honey, I didn't say anything, how could I possibly say anything?"
"How did Chu Zhen know all of this?"
"How would I know? I saw Chu Zhen's car downstairs when you were hospitalized, but I didn't see him come to the ward. So I think it was just a coincidence. As for your blind date, I really didn't mention it!"
Huang Yanyan is not the kind of person who would lie, let alone betray me. Since she said that, it must not have been her. So how did Chu Zhen know?
After hanging up the phone, I bought some snacks that Chu Lin liked and went upstairs.
"Have you found out?"
"What?"
"Did you call Huang Yanyan to ask?"
It seems that nothing can be hidden from Chu Zhen.
"You're just making me feel pressured," I said calmly. "Chu Lin, come here and have something to eat." I didn't want to argue with him about what we were just talking about, so I called Chu Lin over. After all, Chu Lin was here, so we had to pretend to be very affectionate.
"Mrs. Lin, what were you discussing just now?"
“We’re discussing this. Could you please drop our surnames? It sounds weird when people call us Dad Chu and Mom Lin in public, doesn’t it?” Chu Zhen said before I could answer.
"Really? Can I call you Mom and Dad directly?" Chu Lin looked very excited.
"Of course~" Chu Zhen smiled, "Because you have many loving mothers in the hospital, that's why the headmistress asks you to call them by their names. But outside, you only have us as your parents, so you can just call us Dad and Mom." Chu Zhen explained patiently.
"Great! I can have a mom and dad like other kids!" Chu Lin exclaimed excitedly. "Mom, can I call you that?" Chu Lin looked at me with a grin.
"Of course you can, I am your mother~" I didn't want to spoil Chu Lin's mood at this moment, and I had always planned to adopt Chu Lin.
"Dad, Mom~" Chu Lin kept calling out, and Chu Zhen and I looked at him with doting eyes. It seemed that because of Chu Lin's way of addressing us, there was a subtle change in our relationship.
"I followed the bus you took home for the Chinese New Year all the way until your dad picked you up. I saw you and Wang Sihong meeting for the first time at the supermarket. I was immediately jealous, but I managed to suppress it. I was planning to surprise you by visiting your home the next day, but as soon as I got off the bus, I saw an aunt carrying some things, talking on the phone about your family proposing marriage. I couldn't stand it, so I drove back to City A." Chu Zhen said as soon as Chu Lin finished eating and left.
"So, you originally planned to visit my home?"
"Yes, I was cold to you after the New Year because my pride was hurt by what you said before the New Year. You told me you weren't ready, and I wondered if we were getting tired of each other because we spent too much time in the same office. So I always went out to give you enough time and space to prepare. But I didn't expect that your preparation was to participate in a poverty alleviation project. You are determined to be at the bottom of society. I don't object to you participating in this project, but what you said when I went to see you hurt me. After I came back, I tried to let go, but I couldn't convince myself. I would drive to your building without thinking. That day I saw Huang Yanyan rushing to help you, afraid that something might happen to you, so I followed her. Fortunately, you were just exhausted. I asked the nurse and she said that you were troubled by love. I was actually a little happy when I heard that. At least I know that you still have feelings for me."
"So you don't know why I was hospitalized that day?"
"Because of me? Because we broke up?" Chu Zhen looked at me, puzzled.
"I went to the TV station to find you, wanting to return the money for the surgery, but I saw someone sitting in the passenger seat." I didn't continue, trusting he would understand.
Chu Zhen did not answer immediately, but hesitated for a moment.
"I get it, does that mean you're jealous?" To my surprise, he looked at me with a grin.
"I prefer sweet and spicy flavors and I absolutely hate the sour smell of vinegar."
“She came back to China that day and came to the TV station to find me,” Chu Zhen said, without offering any further explanation.
"Then why is it the passenger seat?"
"You care about this a lot?"
"Yes, I remember you said that the girl who can sit in Chen Weiqi's passenger seat must have an unusual relationship with him. Don't you think that your passenger seat should also be a reserved seat?"
"The trunk contained camera equipment, and the back seats contained her luggage, so she could only sit in the front passenger seat."
"Really? It seems like you came to find me as soon as you got off the plane?" I really admire myself for how quickly my mind works.
"Yes, I'm the only person she knows in this city," Chu Zhen said without hiding anything.
"That's good. I'm satisfied with your explanation. A girl travels all the way back to China, but instead of meeting her parents first, she comes to see you. What kind of feelings do you have!"
I thought Chu Zhen's explanation was utter nonsense. The trunk was for equipment and the back seats were for luggage. Chu Zhen could have simply not driven. I'm not a petty person, but I admit I was jealous.
"Her parents live quite far away." Chu Zhen was still avoiding mentioning the girl, and I could sense that, so I didn't ask any more questions.
"If there's any misunderstanding, ask and I'll answer."
It seems that Chu Zhen wants to explain everything clearly today.
"You don't need to explain anything to me. We can only be considered friends at best right now."
"That won't do, we're husband and wife now." Chu Zhen smiled.
"Husband and wife? You're dreaming!" I rolled my eyes at him.
"Chu Lin, come here~" Chu Zhen beckoned to Chu Lin.
"What are you doing, Dad?" Chu Lin changed his tune quite quickly.
"Call us."
"Dad, Mom~" Chu Lin shouted happily, attracting envious glances from others. Most of the people accompanying their children here were mothers; it was rare to see couples coming together.
"Did you hear that? As long as Chu Lin is here, we are husband and wife."
Chu Zhen is truly a cunning man~ It turns out that everything just now was a trap for what's to come.
It was quite late when we left the amusement park, and it was time to take Chu Lin back to the orphanage. We had a quick meal outside and then sent Chu Lin home. All the way, the child kept calling out to us. It turns out that being called "Dad" and "Mom" is something this child is proud of.
