Chapter 9 First Day at Work
Wen Wan raised her eyes and saw a group of people approaching, with Lu Dongping walking at the very edge.
She grinned and called out, "Good morning, Secretary Lu!" Then she called out to Lu Minghai who was with him, "Good morning, Captain!"
Lu Minghai waved his hands weakly: "Now that you've received the things, go to work!" After that, he turned around and glared at Lu Dongping fiercely, "What an unreliable brat!"
Lu Dongping touched his nose angrily, pulled out the dry straw in his mouth, and glanced at Wen Wan who was passing by him.
Can you blame him for this? He was just careless for a moment, okay?
As soon as Wen Wan left, Lu Minghai started roaring, "Look at what you've done! Go team up with her later. If you get tired and start crying, you'll have to do all her work!"
Lu Dongping's father, Lu Mingjiang, was not happy about it. "Brother, how can Dongping have to provide work for someone when they come back? These educated youth, no matter how tall, short, fat or thin, all cry when they first arrive. After they cry enough and their hands get calluses, they naturally learn how to work."
Lu Dongping's mother, Zhang Hongying, sighed, "He looked quite young, but why was he sent down to the countryside? He's so beautiful, like a half-opened flower, but he doesn't want to be a good city dweller, he doesn't want to eat commercial grain, and instead comes here to suffer."
Lu Mingjiang said: "I'm just bored because I'm full!"
Lu Dongping didn't say anything. He took the pickaxe, put it on his shoulder and left.
When they arrived at the wasteland, Lu Minghai rudely called Wen Wan to sit behind him.
The family went around the place. Zhang Hongying continued yesterday's work, cutting branches and weeds at the roots in the front, while Lu Mingjiang and Lu Dongping picked up pickaxes and dug in the back.
Wen Wan stood there without moving, first watching how others did it, then put down the dustpan she was carrying and picked up the iron rake that was thrown on the ground to rake the ground.
The dug-up tree roots and grass roots must be raked together, so that the members can carry them back and use them as firewood if they want.
Wen Wan had never used a rake before, and she found it new and novel at first. She learned things quickly and worked in a very professional manner, but she lost her ability after a while.
My hands hurt, a burning pain.
Her hands are used for writing, holding a needle or playing the piano. She has never done these things before.
The sun had just climbed over the mountain when two big blisters appeared on my palms.
Unable to do it, she threw away the rake and simply squatted on the ground to pick up stones.
Lu Dongping took a moment to catch his breath and glanced at her. He smiled, his tongue against his back teeth, and leaned on his pickaxe and called out to her, "Hey, young educated youth! Can you carry all that away?"
Wen Wan looked at the not-too-big bamboo winnowing basket and was a little unsure: "It should, it should be okay, right?" As she said that, she squatted down, grabbed the edge of the winnowing basket with both hands and lifted it up with force. She lifted it up a little bit but was then dropped down by the weight and sat down directly on the mud.
Lu Dongping laughed out loud without any hesitation.
He threw away the pickaxe in his hand, walked over, bent down and picked up the winnowing basket. It looked very easy. He walked a long way with the winnowing basket and poured out the stones.
He turned around and threw the dustpan in front of her: "No, you can't do that. A diligent person breaks his legs while a lazy person breaks his waist. I'd rather break my legs than my waist. Pick up less and run more times, okay? You're so stupid."
You are the stupid one.
Wen Wan hummed inwardly but said nothing. She didn't want to break her legs or her waist. Could she just quit? Why was it so tiring?
She was really dawdling. Even though Lu Minghai and Lu Mingjiang had been mentally prepared, they were still furious when they saw her rake the ground poorly and pick up stones slowly.
If it were someone else, Lu Minghai would have started cursing.
His anger turned into curse words on the tip of his tongue, but he swallowed them back and said in a softened voice: "Comrade Wen Wan, the way you work is not right. Digging the ground is eight points of work for us, raking, mowing and picking up stones are six points of work. The way you work, it's good to be rated two points. How many work points can you earn in a year at this rate?" The most important thing is that the brigade's grain distribution is 70% labor and 30% labor, and the per capita grain accounts for 70%. If the production team slacks off, it will suffer, and the members will also have opinions, and they may follow suit.
These jobs could be done by the women in the team or the 15 or 16-year-old children, but they were impossible for these educated youth. The difference was so huge that it was really a headache.
Wen Wan thought, if she didn't have any work points, then she wouldn't have any work points. If that didn't work out, she'd just find a way to buy food. But she just thought about it, nodding obediently. "Oh, I'll work faster. I'll try to work faster." Then she really quickened her pace, her heart already beginning to sob violently.
I don’t want to do this anymore, I don’t want to do this anymore…
