Chapter 4 Who is that girl?

Chapter 4 Who is that girl?

There weren't many people outside during lunch break.

Wen Ling dragged Wen He by the arm to the infirmary. Even though she knew he was standing up for her, she was still a little angry that he hadn't protected her.

Just as he was about to ask why he had taken action, Wen He's phone rang. Seeing that the contact name was "Dad," he muttered to himself, wondering why he would call at this time. As soon as he answered, he was met with a barrage of insults.

“What trouble have you gotten into at school?” Wen Jianjun said. “Your teachers have been calling me to complain that you’re disobedient and that you hit someone, but you won’t tell me why.”

"What mischief have you been up to behind my back again, you brat? Can't you learn more from your sister's excellent qualities and stop embarrassing me like this?"

As soon as Wen Jianjun uttered his first curse, Wen He moved the phone away from his ear. While the other end of the phone was cursing, he was making funny faces and imitating his father's tone of voice.

Wen Ling gave him a light glare, and Wen He toned it down a bit, picked at his ear, turned his face away, and looked impatient to listen.

Wen Ling put her phone on speakerphone.

"I'm talking to you, you brat, are you playing dead again?" Wen Jianjun's fierce tone almost deafened Wen Ling.

"...Second Uncle".

The sound stopped, and the wind seemed to have stopped too.

The surroundings were completely silent.

"Hey, it's Lingling." As soon as Wen Jianjun heard Wen Ling's voice, he immediately changed his expression. Wen He rolled his eyes, used to the way the voice was.

"I just taught that brat a lesson, did I scare you?"

Wen Ling shook her head, responded, and explained, "Second Uncle, Xiao He... got into the fight because of me, so please don't talk about him."

"What's wrong?" Wen Jianjun immediately became tense. "Is someone at school bullying you?"

"without."

“Yes, there is one suitor… who’s quite a nuisance,” Wen Ling said slowly. “I had Xiao He help deal with him.”

Wen He scoffed and interjected, "That guy deserved to be beaten."

Wen Jianjun coughed a few times: "Fine, I'll let it go this time. Wen He, if you don't behave yourself and keep bringing up fighting, I'll cut off your card sooner or later."

Wen He gave a blank "oh" in response.

Wen Jianjun cursed her a few more times, and finally instructed her: "Behave yourself at school, don't cause trouble for your sister, and take good care of your sister, do you hear me?"

"I heard you." Wen He pouted. "Do you even need to tell me?"

Wen Jianjun asked about Wen Ling's recent situation, and just as he was about to hang up after showing his concern, Wen He scratched his eyelids and suddenly called out very formally, "Dad."

Wen Jianjun's eyelids twitched: "What nonsense are you going to spout now?"

Wen Ling turned her face away, unable to suppress a smile. She often found the unique way the father and son interacted quite amusing.

Wen He grunted, sounding very unsure of himself, and mumbled what he wanted to say. Wen Jianjun didn't hear him clearly: "Are you a three-year-old? You haven't even learned to speak yet."

"I got my driver's license. Buy me a car, nothing expensive, a million will do."

Wen Jianjun sneered: "You've committed a crime and you still want to buy a car? Dream on, get lost."

Wen He glanced at Wen Ling, blinked, and a barely perceptible smile appeared on his lips. He quickly said, "This is what my sister wants. She wants to go out on the weekend and doesn't want to take a ride. It's more convenient to ride in our own car!"

Wen Ling looked at him with a puzzled expression, tilting her head: "?"

Wen Jianjun fell silent again: "I'll have Xiao Wu go over there later."

"Yes!" Wen He said from the bottom of his heart, "Thank you for your generosity, Dad."

Wen Jianjun laughed and scolded, "You brat, you just love to talk nonsense."

Wen Ling was the Wen brothers' get-out-of-jail-free card.

Her cousins used her as an excuse countless times to take the blame for them or to fulfill some of their little wishes.

Perhaps because there was only one girl in three generations, Wen Ling was exceptionally pampered. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that the elders in the family spoiled her. Even if she made a mistake, they would only coax her and tell her not to do it again next time. Fortunately, she was obedient and determined, and did not develop a spoiled and unreasonable personality in the greenhouse.

In the medical clinic's lounge, the cool chairs were so cold they made your legs shiver.

Wen Ling took a cotton swab and applied iodine to Wen He's injured ear: "Why, were you fighting?"

Wen He didn't want her to know those foul words, so he lowered his eyelashes and said, "His mouth is dirty, he deserves to be hit, and I didn't hit him hard enough."

As he moved, the cotton swab he had been pressing against his skin accidentally fell to the ground, leaving a mark on the porcelain white floor tiles, stained with iodine. Wen Ling reached into his pocket.

Touching the scrap of paper she had used to wipe her hands, the image of the person standing at the office door flashed through her mind. She wiped away the stains on the floor, straightened up, and sighed softly, "Don't do that again."

Wen He asked, puzzled, "What do you mean, 'don't want'?"

Wen Ling lowered her head and said with difficulty, "Don't... don't lose your judgment when it comes to things related to me."

She looked at him very seriously: "I'm fine. It's okay if people say a few words to me. In the future, don't fight anymore. It will only make the people who care about you feel more sorry for you."

Wen He gave an "oh" and lowered his head, like a docile little dog.

Wen Ling thought of the girl in the office, smiled, and unusually asked, "Who is that girl?"

Wen He didn't react for a moment: "Which girl?"

Wen Ling smiled without saying a word, blinked, and nodded her chin in the direction of the administration building.

“Oh—” Wen He said quite frankly, “Her? She’s in the dance department, just… what you see is fine.”

"What do you mean?"

Wen Ling teased him, "Do you like me?"

Discussing such matters in front of his sister made Wen He feel inexplicably ashamed. He awkwardly scratched his hair and hummed in response.

"She's quite pretty." Recalling her decisive personality, Wen Ling smiled. "And, quite unique."

Do you like her?

Wen He shrugged: "It's alright, I don't have any thoughts about dating right now."

Upon hearing this, Wen Ling didn't feel relieved; instead, she was somewhat worried: "You shouldn't have...?"

Seeing her reaction, Wen He knew she was overthinking things again, and patiently explained, "No, I haven't been thinking about that person all this time, I just don't want to talk about it right now."

When talking about the past, Wen Ling paid special attention to his little emotions.

After all, when his ex-girlfriend graduated and went abroad, the usually optimistic Wen He locked himself in his room for three days and didn't come out. Wen Ling really thought he was going to be depressed because of this.

However, after being locked up for three days, he reverted to his old ways.

Wen Ling nodded knowingly, and without realizing it, she put on her older sister's airs again: "Then if you... don't like it, just say so as soon as possible."

Neither agreeing nor refusing is no different from being a jerk.

Upon hearing this, Wen He instantly felt a headache coming on. He held his head in his hands, seemingly thinking of something painful: "Sis, you don't know, I've said it so many times, but it's no use at all. I've even told her that I have an ex-girlfriend I can't forget, but she doesn't believe me. I can't exactly beat her up, can I?"

Wen Ling was startled by his reaction.

Feeling a little embarrassed, she realized that girls could be so bold in pursuing boys. She patted Wen He's back reassuringly, wanting to say it was okay, or else—

Before he could finish speaking, Yan Qingli suddenly appeared out of nowhere.

"You're Wen He's older sister, right?"

Wen He looked up, somewhat bewildered. The siblings exchanged a knowing glance, and Wen Ling nodded blankly, unsure of what the person in front of her meant.

Yan Qingli smiled and said, "Hello, sister. My name is Yan Qingli."

Wen Ling felt she should also introduce herself, so she smiled and said, "Hello, I—"

Wen He interrupted impatiently, staring at her: "What are you going to do now? It's fine if you bother me all the time, but don't mess with my sister."

Yan Qingli ignored him and spoke to Wen Ling on her own: "Hello, sister. I know your name. Wen Ling, it's the character for 'command' with the water radical, right?"

Wen Ling nodded and continued listening to her.

"I like Wenhe—"

Wen Ling's eyes widened in surprise. Is this how people pursue each other now?

Wen He had no idea what she was up to. He frowned and got up to stop her, but Wen Ling grabbed his arm and said, "It's okay. If you don't want to hear it, just go out."

Wen He: "..."

He obediently sat down again.

Yan Qingli didn't think that confessing her feelings in public was a shameful thing, even if she would be rejected.

“He has rejected me many times. I’ve been the one who kept bothering him. I like him, and my pursuing him doesn’t contradict his rejection of me,” Yan Qingli said. “This meeting was rather rushed. Sister, I’ll treat you to a meal next time.”

After saying that, without giving the siblings time to react, she stuffed the iodine solution she had just bought into Wen Ling's hand and turned to leave.

The remaining figures are Wen Ling, who remains completely bewildered, and Wen He, who is howling to the sky.

He scratched his head in frustration: "Sis, you saw it all, right? Tell me, what else can I do? I've said everything I could. I can't really hit her, can I?"

Although I felt that Wen He was inexplicably pitiful.

But Wen Ling still wanted to laugh a little. It was rare to see Wen He so frustrated and completely helpless against someone.

She murmured softly, "Hmm, I don't know what to do either."
