The Tang Dynasty version of the Rainbow Feather Dance is a story-driven version, or rather, it's a direct extension of the original story, like a dance drama. We don't write novels; we're just online text copiers. -◎ The source of the story is Emperor Xuanzong's romantic dream, in which he travels to the moon palace, where fairies dance, white rabbits present auspicious omens, and he leans against a jade cassia tree, watching with great relish.
Therefore, the Rainbow Feather Dance performed in the Daming Palace imitated the scene in the Moon Palace. Emperor Xuanzong, high above all others, remained an observer, just as he had been in the Moon Palace, only this time he sat on the dragon throne. The Imperial Concubine imitated the fairies in the Moon Palace.
The 21st-century version of the Rainbow Feather Dance is different. Its scale has been significantly altered, and the plot has deviated from its original form. Viewers find it difficult to understand the meaning conveyed by the dance, resulting in an overall strange feeling. This feeling is subtle; if Duanmu Ci hadn't once "played" Li Guinian, he wouldn't have noticed it so keenly.
So Su Wuyu and Yun Yun naturally wouldn't notice, but they were both alert people. Just from Duanmu Ci's light mention, they instantly understood. After carefully sensing and reflecting on it, they also felt this strange and wonderful feeling.
"Then what should we do?" Yun Yun asked. In her opinion, this was almost unsolvable. This strange feeling was the price that had to be paid for adapting the dance. After all, the adapted dance was no longer the original one. It was understandable that there were some subtle differences. It would be abnormal if there were none, especially for a high-end dance like the Rainbow Feather Dance.
Su Wuyu turned to look at the students who were still practicing their dance and said softly, "It's just a few minor flaws. The audience won't notice them."
That's for sure; even she, a professional dancer herself, didn't notice these flaws. Could you really expect the student audience to see them? Besides, they probably wouldn't care anyway; they'd likely only care about the dancers' beauty and the costumes' extravagance. They probably wouldn't pay much attention to the content, and their aesthetic standards wouldn't be that high.
“But flaws still exist,” Duanmu Ci said.
Of the three people present, all possessed a high level of aesthetic appreciation. Even if the audience couldn't perceive these flaws, they knew that performing a flawed dance was extremely unpleasant. Even without obsessive-compulsive disorder, they would feel as disgusted as eating a bowl of rice with a hair in it.
Is there any way?
"Yes!" Duanmu Ci smiled.
Su Wuyu and Yun Yun breathed a sigh of relief. Asking them to dance a flawed dance was really asking too much. It was great that there was a solution, but they quickly became dissatisfied again, unhappy with Duanmu Ci's pretentious antics. So they didn't ask any more questions, only giving their teacher disapproving looks…
"Ahem." Duanmu Ci coughed twice, then said, "The reason why the Rainbow Feather Dance has this strange feeling is because the audience is gone. In that case, let's make him leave the stage!"
"What will happen next?"
Duanmu Ci nodded, "That's right."
Su Wuyu frowned. "You mean a male-female duet? The female dancer plays the moon goddess, and the male dancer plays Emperor Xuanzong of Tang, Li Longji?"
"Teacher Su is truly brilliant!" Duanmu Ci gave her a small compliment.
“But…where are we going to find such a ‘Li Longji’?” Su Wuyu asked.
Duanmu Ci looked at Yun Yun. Yun Yun understood and replied, "We have some in our dance club! The dance club isn't just for girls! There are quite a few boys too. I think the vice-president is pretty good; he's handsome and dances well!"
"That's him!" Duanmu Ci decisively decided, "Go and find him."
"Wait a minute. Since we're adding another person, shouldn't we make some changes?" Su Wuyu stopped Yun Yun, who was about to make a phone call.
"you're right!"
Then, the following afternoon, Duanmu Ci and his group began another round of discussions. Duanmu Ci's idea was to have the "Li Longji" and the "Moon Palace Fairy" dance together, and then, as they danced, they would fall in love, creating a romantic and poetic story. The audience would probably love to watch that, and the atmosphere would definitely be electric!
Su Wuyu and Yun Yun did not object. Although Su Wuyu was somewhat reluctant to dance with a man, she couldn't come up with a better solution, so they had no choice. In the following time, they began to design the male dancer's dance moves, which was of course no challenge for the knowledgeable Duanmu Ci, who quickly came up with them.
However, during this process, Su Wuyu and Yun Yun, just like Duanmu Ci did a couple of days ago, thoroughly enjoyed the teacher's dance moves. After all, Duanmu was the only man present, so who else would dance if not him? But Duanmu's dance moves were truly impressive, leaving Su Wuyu and Yun Yun in awe.
Just as the event was about to end, Duanmu Ci received a call from Bu Tongxun, who said that the music was ready.
Dance and music are inseparable; they enhance each other exceptionally well. The practice sessions at the Duanmu Academy these past two days have been silent, just practicing the movements, because the music isn't ready yet. The music for this "Rainbow Feather Dance" was entirely composed by Duanmu Ci; he personally played each instrument—the qin, se, pipa, flute, and chime bells. These individual audio recordings were then sent to a professional music studio in China for synthesis, preparing them for use as background music.
These things take time, which is why it took so long to get them done. But now that they're done, starting tomorrow, the dancers at Duanmu Hall will no longer need to practice "silent dancing".
