Duanmu Jin was a top student in rhetoric in college, so he knew how to enhance the effect of words or sentences in order to attract other people's attention and deepen their impression. So after he sat down, he didn't say anything else, but only said "the situation is not good", which perfectly conveyed the severity of the situation.
However, he was also a worthy opponent. His master, Duanmu Ci, was a top student in the "speech" category when he studied under Confucius. How could he be led by the nose by someone else's words?
Duanmu Ci leisurely ate his pancake, then asked slowly and deliberately, "Tell me in detail."
"Yes," Jin replied, and then began to explain the current situation to Duanmu Ci.
In reality, the Rare Club was more like a traditional social gathering, albeit a place for important people to socialize. And indeed, that was its original function. Everyone there was of high status, and it was difficult to find like-minded individuals. Here, everyone's status was roughly equal; no one was considered poor, so they could naturally relax and have fun.
That's why the club's management board wasn't initially that important; even second-rate families like Hilton could join. It was only later, as the Rare Club's functions became more comprehensive and the management board's power and benefits increased, that people suddenly realized how important this place truly was.
And so the fighting began.
Although the Rare Club is a place for people to gather and have fun, people still prefer to hang out with those they know well, so there are still some degrees of closeness among them. The myth that you can become friends just by hanging out here is basically impossible.
Many members who were sharing top-quality champagne here the night before were now battling it out in the business world the very next day, as if they didn't know each other at all.
They were hiding knives under the table while they were drinking.
Otherwise, the situation between the Morgan and Duanmu families wouldn't have escalated to this point.
Morgan contacted the other four major surnames in the management committee. He was determined to purge the management committee and sweep out all the minor surnames that had infiltrated when the Rare Club was first established, such as Hilton. Morgan believed that someone who owned a hotel had no right to attend the management committee, even if he was just there to make up a name for himself.
The Rare Club is primarily composed of European and American elites, so some of its systems naturally follow a Greek-style democratic approach. The management proposes motions, and then all members vote to confirm whether it's yes or no.
However, this approach is clearly disadvantageous for the Duanmu family.
Because the Duanmu family is very low-key, they hardly interact with other families. Therefore, their network of connections is naturally not as extensive as the Morgan family's. If it really comes down to a vote, the outcome is predictable. Moreover, the Morgan family is powerful and would be unlikely to offend anyone unnecessarily.
Moreover, the management committee is an executive body, considered the "aristocrats" of the Rare Club, its members among members, already attracting the secret envy and resentment of countless others. If a few members could actually be brought down, the ordinary members would surely be happy to see it happen, let alone oppose it.
Therefore, Duanmu Ci's only option now is to prevent the Morgan family from issuing the proposal. He must try to thwart it before the Morgan family takes action, otherwise the consequences could be dire.
Duanmu Ci pondered for a long time before eating the pastry in his hand. "What was the reaction of the other families in the management council? I mean, those lesser surnames."
The management committee comprises ten member families who oversee the daily operations of the Rare Club, much like the Council of Ten Generals in ancient Greece. However, these ten "generals" have varying roles and statuses. Besides the five major surnames such as Morgan and Windsor, there are five lesser surnames.
The Duanmu, Hilton, Christian, Baker, and Robert families—except for the Duanmu family—had all infiltrated the management board before the Rare Club gained real recognition, so their influence was minimal. Therefore, Duanmu Ci sometimes felt that Morgan's approach wasn't entirely wrong...
“I tried to contact them and join forces with them to fight against Morgan, but the result was not satisfactory,” Jin said. “Besides the Hilton family and the Christian family, there are two other families that are evasive. It is clear that they do not want to fight against Morgan and want to settle things peacefully. Even if they are expelled from the management board, they will not say anything.”
“Foolish,” Duanmu Ci succinctly stated.
"It's not just stupid, it's utterly foolish!" Duanmu Jin chimed in. "These second-rate families are so intimidated by Morgan's formidable reputation that they can't see the future. Don't they know how much benefit a family's status as a management board member can bring them? If it weren't for this status, would the Baker family be wearing the Pope's robes? Would the Robert family's businesses be spread all over the world? They don't hold onto such a good hand tightly, but throw it away just because someone scares them. These spendthrifts should be stripped of their chairmanship! Even professional managers would do a better job!"
"If you were to remove those two incompetent guys from their positions and send them to Bali for a vacation, and put a pig on their backs, the subordinates would find that the company's profits would increase significantly two months later!"
Duanmu Ci exclaimed in admiration, "What brilliant rhetoric! So sharp-tongued, I love it!"
"Just a little trick," Jin said modestly, then asked, "But what does Your Excellency plan to do about the current situation?" Duanmu Ci's close associates all called him "Your Excellency," following the old steward's example.
