Chapter Seventy: A Few Things Before Leaving

The phrase "Let's take a trip on a whim" sounds appealing, but it only exists in literary rhetoric, inspiring generations of idealistic young men and women who have a passionate heart but lack the will to act. △↗ In the real, traditional three-dimensional world, this phrase is as absurd as the "non-aggression pact" signed between the Soviet Union and Germany in the early stages of World War II.

In fact, Duanmu Ci had a lot of preparations to make before leaving.

First of all, it's highly unreasonable for a teacher to take a long leave of absence without a valid reason, especially not maternity leave. Therefore, Duanmu Ci's first priority is to resolve the leave issue. Obviously, taking leave under the pretext of travel or "resolving underworld disputes" is absolutely not allowed, even if Duanmu Ci donated a building to the school.

Duanmu Ci first subtly revealed the news in class, but as soon as get out of class ended, Professor Yan Zhigui caught him and took him to his office. "Young man, you're so impatient! You've only been teaching for a short time, and you can't even stand the quiet? How can you do scholarship?!"

Which despicable person snitched on me...? Duanmu Ci's mind raced for a moment before he pinpointed the "real culprit"—

Tang Luoluo!

It must be her!

After sitting down at Yan Zhigui's prompting, Duanmu Ci said, "Professor Yan, please don't be silly. I didn't ask for leave to go out for fun. I have important business to attend to."

"What important thing could be more important than academic research?" Yan Zhigui said with great distress. In his eyes, Duanmu Ci was a very talented and promising young man. He did not want this "seed of learning" on whom he had placed high hopes to be ruined by self-indulgence. "You should stay in school and not go anywhere else!"

Logically speaking, Yan Zhigui's almost commanding tone was unacceptable to Duanmu Ci. Both in terms of age and status, Duanmu Ci would not allow anyone to speak to him like that. Even a gentleman with a broad and magnanimous heart, who wouldn't stoop to someone's level, would still furrow his brow.

But this time was different. Anyone with a modicum of common sense could hear the concern in Yan Zhigui's voice; he had extremely high expectations for Duanmu Ci! He believed Duanmu Ci could inherit his academic mantle and even carry forward traditional Chinese learning. Of course, this was all without his knowledge of Duanmu Ci's true identity...

“This time there really is something going on,” Duanmu Ci said cryptically, “some family matters.”

Family affairs, short for "family matters," have completely different meanings.

"Oh~~" Yan Zhigui thought he knew something and nodded.

Yan Zhigui had heard that Duanmu Ci's interview at Haishan University involved exchanging an entire building for a house, something he was aware of. In Yan Zhigui's eyes, anyone capable of such a grand gesture must come from an extraordinary family! At this moment, Duanmu Ci mentioned having family matters to attend to, and Yan Zhigui was already conjuring up various scenarios of power struggles within wealthy families in his mind...

“Since that’s the case, I won’t stop you.” Yan Zhigui sighed. “Remember to come back soon.” His tone was desolate. It was clear that Yan Zhigui did not think highly of Duanmu Ci. After all, in his eyes, Duanmu Ci was “exiled” to Haishan University. Otherwise, which big family would be willing to send the young man on whom the family had placed high hopes to teach at the school?

That's impossible!

Duanmu Ci was taken aback. Had the old man misunderstood something? However, he wasn't foolish enough to explain. He simply said he understood and then left.

...

...

After leaving Yan Zhigui's office, Duanmu Ci went straight to Wei Yue's office.

"Could you contact the University of Tokyo?" Duanmu Ci stated his purpose directly.

"The University of Tokyo?" Wei Yue was taken aback. "What are you going to do?"

"Don't you need a reason to take leave? A month-long leave during the work period—I can't think of any other reason besides maternity leave," Duanmu Ci said righteously. "But you and I are both men, you bastard!"

"What does this have to do with the University of Tokyo?"

“Of course there’s a connection.” Duanmu Ci explained to Wei Yue, “During the 2010 Tokyo World Expo, the University of Tokyo visited our school. It’s only right and proper that we reciprocate!”

“A follow-up visit? Hmm…” Wei Yue understood Duanmu Ci’s meaning. “That’s really ingenious. How did you even come up with that idea?”

Since taking leave is not an option, why not try another way? For example, use work as a basis for a business trip. In this world, there are always more solutions than problems.

“If I were in Japan, and hadn’t fallen out with my family, getting into the University of Tokyo wouldn’t be a problem,” Wei Yue said, somewhat troubled. “But you know my current situation… it’s a bit difficult.”

Duanmu Ci just smiled when he heard this. "A person who has been groomed as the heir of the family since childhood, do you not even have a few reliable retainers by your side? If not, you probably wouldn't have been able to escape Tokyo and come to China."

"Duanmu-jun truly has a pair of discerning eyes that see through everything!" Wei Yue exclaimed.

"Don't even think about stalling for time. If you can't handle this properly, I'll just give the commission to the RAR Club. It's such a reasonable little thing, someone will always help me out. At worst, it'll just be a commission. So, don't try anything funny!"

"Duanmu-jun, you truly have the insight to see through everything!" Wei Yue exclaimed sincerely after being exposed.

After discussing the matter with Wei Yue, Duanmu Ci left. He wasn't worried at all about whether Wei Yue could solve the problem. If she couldn't even handle this trivial matter, then the Genji clan really should consider changing their heir; even choosing someone from a collateral branch would be better than a useless person!

Anyway, the Japanese only value family background, not bloodline.
