Chapter Seventy-Seven: A Rainy Night of Mercy and Slaughter (Supplement)
Duanmu Ci and Wei Yue each carried an umbrella they'd swiped from the Noma restaurant as they left. While not as valuable as Lockwood's handcrafted umbrellas, they were certainly better than "Paradise Umbrellas." One in two people who read romance novels has a registered account on °°.com.
They strolled along the straight, damp street. Just hours before, it had been a vibrant, bustling scene, like a richly colored oil painting. In the blink of an eye, night had fallen and white rain had washed away the extravagant colors, revealing a pale and powerless reality.
The streets were nearly deserted, save for a few overtime workers who had just finished their shifts and were running with briefcases on their heads, rain splashing between their shoes. Some opted to head straight to a roadside izakaya (Japanese pub) to have a drink with colleagues before deciding whether to go home. Traffic gradually thinned out, with only a few prestigious luxury cars occasionally roaring past the "nighttime strollers," their high-displacement engines blaring and their bright fog lights flashing.
Wei Yue watched the taillights of the departing car and said casually, "Shinjuku is the most bustling commercial district in Tokyo. Many large companies have their headquarters here. It's the heart of Tokyo, and the profits here are huge. So there are also many violent gangs in Shinjuku, who are busy collecting protection money every day, while they look down on the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, which is right next door."
Duanmu Ci chuckled, "Your Japanese violent gangs are really arrogant. Isn't the Tokyo Metropolitan Government located in Shinjuku? Even if your government isn't very powerful, it doesn't necessarily mean it will allow these monsters to run rampant under its nose, does it? It's like an emperor not allowing beggars to sleep at his palace gates. Doesn't anyone complain?"
“I heard that you Chinese already had the concept of ‘yin and yang’ more than 2,000 years ago during the Spring and Autumn Period, or even earlier, such as Fuxi or something like that,” Wei Yue said calmly. “In this world, there is up and down, long and short, difficult and easy. All things carry yin and embrace yang, and achieve harmony through the interaction of these energies.”
"Where there is light, there is darkness; darkness lies on the other side of light. Absolute light does not exist. Just as your Chinese philosophy says, there must always be a balance. Here, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government holds the power of the light side, while the various large and small organizations hold the power of the dark side. Everyone is carefully guarding the boundary between light and darkness with swords in hand, not allowing either side to intrude."
"Then wouldn't your Japanese violent gangs be able to do whatever they want?" Duanmu Ci asked with some doubt. "The Tokyo Metropolitan Government controls the daytime, and they control the night. Once the moon rises in the east, the city changes hands. Isn't that a bit scary?"
Wei Yue smiled and said, "Of course they are also bound by rules, and those rules are the law. However, this law is not the law of lawyers, but the law that everyone tacitly agrees with, which is the bottom line. Once these violent gangs cross the government's bottom line, they will be arrested."
"That's more like it," Duanmu Ci asked. "So where are we going now?"
"Go to Kabukicho."
Kabukicho? What are you going there for?
Wei Yue laughed and said, "My retainer told me that there will be a fight between two gangs today. It will be with knives, not guns, and there won't be many people, about seventy or eighty. Let's go and watch the excitement, and also let Lord Duanmu see Tokyo at night."
"very good."

...
Kabukicho, located in Shinjuku, Tokyo, is Asia's largest red-light district. From late at night to dawn, it's a bustling metropolis that never sleeps. Kabukicho is divided into 1-chome and 2-chome. 2-chome is more legitimate, with only a few nightclubs and love hotels, while 1-chome is lined with sex shops.
“Actually, it was even more outrageous there before.” Wei Yue looked at the lights in the distance. “According to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s Vice Governor in 2004, there were as many as 120 offices of Japanese violent gangs in Kabukicho, with as many as 1,000 gang members active in the town. Later, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government launched the ‘Kabukicho Renaissance Project’ aimed at driving violent gangs out of Kabukicho, and the situation improved somewhat.”
"If that's the case, then what's the point of watching the show?"
"It's gotten a little better, a little better, a little better!" Wei Yue repeated the important point three times. "How could this kind of thing really disappear? It's just that it's been toned down a bit, giving the Tokyo Metropolitan Government some face. In reality, it can't even scratch the surface. Kabukicho has a huge number of entertainment venues and such within one square kilometer. It's known as the 'labyrinth city of **'. This kind of place contributes a lot of tax revenue and gray income to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government every year. How could they really crack down on it?"
"You said you wanted to watch the excitement, and there were violent scenes. Aren't you afraid of the danger?" Duanmu Ci suddenly asked.
"Of course we're afraid," Wei Yue said with a smile. "That's why we need to buy some things."
As they were saying this, they happened to walk into a sporting goods store. Wei Yue went inside, looked around, picked up a pool cue, weighed it in her hand, and put it back, seemingly somewhat dissatisfied. Then she weighed a golf club in her hand, still feeling unsatisfied. Just as the shopkeeper was about to ask a question, Wei Yue's eyes suddenly lit up—
"That's it!"
It was a baseball bat, as thick as a fist.
Duanmu Ci followed Wei Yue out of the sporting goods store, holding a baseball bat in his hand, looking completely bewildered. "Why did you buy this? If there's danger, you can just run away. What's the use of buying this?"
