Chapter 48 Picking Up a Sheep

When Xu Genshan walked to Liu Fang's side, he saw a goat that was half a person tall not far away, with a big, bulging belly.

"Is she pregnant with lambs?"

Liu Fang nodded, reaching out to hold down Fu Man'er, who kept trying to slide down. This girl was getting stronger and stronger; she was starting to lose control of her.

"It looks like she's several months along; her belly is so big." Liu Fang even felt that the goat's belly was about to droop to the ground.

"Dad, Dad, I want to touch the goat." Fu Man'er didn't dare to use her strength and struggled for a long time but couldn't get down. She looked at Xu Genshan for help.

Seeing his daughter's wet eyes, Xu Genshan had no reason to disagree. "Come on, let Daddy carry you over to see."

"Be careful, the goat was just walking by, I don't know why it stopped moving?" Liu Fang was a little worried. There were no houses around this forest, and it felt very strange that a goat had suddenly appeared.

Xu Genshan didn't think much of it. He had been hunting in the mountains for many years and had seen a lot of sheep and deer. "I know I won't get too close."

When they got over there, the goat was lying on the ground. "Oh, what happened to its leg?" Xu Genshan protected his daughter with one hand and pushed aside the weeds with the other.

The goat's hind leg was still bleeding profusely, indicating that it was injured and unable to walk, so it had to stop.

"Baa baa baa," the goat bleated again, but it sounded a little weak.

Discussion group

Liu Fang and Xu Genshu followed, and both looked at the goat's injured hind leg. "What should we do?"

Xu Genshan put his daughter down and examined her carefully. "It's quite serious. She's been bleeding. Let me stop the bleeding first."

He was a hunter, and he usually treated his own injuries and stopped the bleeding quickly.

"Father, can we take the goat home? It can't walk anymore." The goat's head had slumped down, its eyelids were drooping, and it looked listless.

Fu Man'er's little hands kept stroking its head.

"Brother, could this be someone's goat?" Xu Genshu asked.

Xu Genshan shook his head. "This is a wild goat. I've seen it on the mountain before. I don't know how it got here. Let's take it home first. There's a veterinarian in the village. Let him take a look. What will happen when it gives birth if we leave it here?"

The goat was too weak to walk anymore, so the Xu brothers had to carry it out. Liu Fang had already tidied up the cart and made room for the goat.

"Man'er, there are sheep in the cart. I'll hold you in a bit." The cart was already big, and with the boiler and sheep, it was packed full, leaving no room for Fu Man'er.

"Mom, I can walk by myself." Hearing that the goat would be taken back, she was very happy. Without needing to be carried, she swung her little legs and ran ahead. After running for a while, she stopped to wait for them and rest.

Xu Genshu helped his older brother push the cart. He was still in a daze. He had heard his family talk about wild pheasants and wild boars before, and he thought that was already amazing.

My niece went to pee and found a pregnant goat. Her luck is just too good!

Yesterday, the Xu family found a wild boar. If they bring back a wild goat today, they'll be bombarded with criticism from everyone.

So before entering the village, the Xu family members had already agreed on a story: the goat was injured and they had bought it cheaply from a hunter.

Everyone kept asking how much the goat cost, so Xu Genshan and his brother quickly pushed the cart inside. Liu Fang turned around and took Fu Man'er to find the village veterinarian.

"Older sister, I heard that your Genshan bought an injured goat. What happened? Why buy an injured one when there's nothing wrong with it?" Granny Yao wanted to find out something, but Xu Genshan's mouth was like a gourd with its mouth sawed off.

She then walked to the back of the Xu family's courtyard, where the Xu family's vegetable garden was located, and Ma Hong and Old Lady Xu were busy working there.

"What? A goat?" Old Mrs. Xu was taken aback, not knowing what Granny Yao was talking about.

Seeing Xu's expression, Yao started babbling again, "Old sister, last time I just wouldn't let your Man'er touch our goats, so why did you buy one? If you're going to buy one, buy a good one. It's such a hassle to bring one back after it's injured. Isn't that a waste of money?"

Normally, Grandma Xu would definitely have replied to her, but she didn't know what was going on yet, so she had to rush back to check.

"Hey, don't go! I haven't finished talking yet!" Old Mrs. Yao was in the middle of her enthusiastic conversation when the two women hurried home, and she, an old woman with bound feet, couldn't keep up.

Xu Genshan originally called the veterinarian just to check the goat's legs, but the veterinarian said as soon as he looked at it that the goat was about to give birth.

"Oh, what should we do then?" No wonder it kept bellowing when we carried the goat into the yard.

This veterinarian is quite skilled; he delivers babies for everything in the village, from cattle and horses to cats and dogs. He hasn't delivered sheep, but he's pretty much the same.

I immediately had them prepare their things and then began the delivery myself.

When Grandma Xu came in, the delivery was already finished. "What happened?" She asked. "Wasn't it supposed to be an injured goat? How did it turn into a lamb?"

"Milk!" Fu Man'er rushed towards her excitedly, "Two sheep came out of your belly."

During the delivery, Liu Fang wouldn't let her see. Only after the lamb came out could she stand on tiptoe to look over. It was so tiny.

"Fang, what's going on? Why did you buy sheep?" If it weren't for the fact that there were outsiders in the yard, Old Mrs. Xu's face would have fallen.

These two aren't naive; how could they do something so irresponsible?

"Mom, these sheep are cheap, and they have calves. We can sell them when they're grown up," Liu Fang said deliberately, glancing at the veterinarian who was listening intently.

Grandma Xu was about to slap her thigh in exasperation. "How foolish! How foolish! Were we tricked?" She thought it was normal for her second son's wife to do such a stupid thing, but she just couldn't understand what her eldest son and his wife had done.

The innocent second son's wife, caught in the crossfire: Mother, listen to me, thank you.

The veterinarian had finished his work, and Xu Genshan slipped him two copper coins, saw him out, and closed the gate to the courtyard.

"Genshan, talk to your mother properly and tell her what exactly happened." Old Mrs. Xu was usually quite lenient with her eldest son, but now she was unusually stern-faced.

"Huh?" Xu Genshan was so focused on talking to the veterinarian that he didn't notice what Liu Fang had said to Grandma Xu, and he was quite confused about Grandma Xu's anger.

Seeing her husband's bewildered expression, Liu Fang secretly smiled, went to the side to tidy up, and let her husband explain to his mother.
