After hearing Xu Genshan's explanation, Old Lady Xu looked at the goat much more pleasingly. "You are smart, you did a good job."

One refers to the incident of finding the goat, and the other refers to the version of events told in the village.
"My sweet granddaughter, come here and let Grandma hold you. You peed at just the right time." Grandma Xu reached out and pulled her granddaughter over, her rough hands stroking her face.
Fu Man'er wrapped her arms around her neck and said, "Grandma, we have goats now, so I'm not going to Grandma Yao's house."
Last time, when she was about to reach out and touch the sheep, Grandma Yao yelled and glared at her, scaring her so much that she never dared to go to the Yao family again.
“No, we’re not going. We have plenty of lambs. Next time she comes, Grandma won’t let her see our lambs.” After talking to Fu Man’er for a while, Grandma Xu was becoming more and more childlike.
Xu Genshu had been watching from the sidelines. He'd never seen his mother act like this before. And even though she'd been looking at him, why hadn't she spoken to him first? She was just happily holding her little niece, seemingly saying nothing.
"Third brother, you have no idea, Mother has become like a demon." Ma Hong came out of the kitchen and saw her brother-in-law standing there in a daze, and whispered to him.
That's right. She's been married into the family for eight or nine years, and she's never seen her mother-in-law so kind. What else could it be but being bewitched?
Xu Genshu chuckled. With the arrival of his new niece, things were definitely different. He felt that everyone in the family was full of energy and had a lot more drive to get things done.
"Mother." Xu Genshu took a few steps and went to Old Madam Xu's side.

Grandma Xu seemed to only just notice him. "Genshu, when are you coming back? I didn't see you."
She had been sitting in the yard the whole time and hadn't seen anyone come in through the door.
Before Xu Genshu could speak, Fu Man'er blurted out everything, even mentioning that she sold food in town.
Grandma Xu's attention, which she had finally managed to focus on her youngest son, was diverted again. "Really? People bought them for five coins, and they're all sold out?"
Hearing her granddaughter's story wasn't enough for her. "Genshan, Fang, did you really sell out of that stuff?"
Perhaps realizing she had shouted too loudly and was afraid others would hear, she carried Fu Man'er into the house.
Hearing her mother-in-law's call, Ma Hong followed her inside with a puzzled look.
At that moment, Xu Genshu had just taken a small stool and sat down. He wanted to sit next to his mother and talk to her, but now he was all alone in the yard.
Ma Hong closed the door behind him when he went in; is it really appropriate for him to push the door open and go in now?
From time to time, Ma Hong's exclamations and laughter could be heard from inside the room. Xu Genshu felt that he shouldn't be there.

"Do you mean you want to continue selling tomorrow?" Grandma Xu asked.
Xu Genshan nodded. They had sold nearly a hundred coins this morning, and that was all; otherwise, they could have sold some more.
“Mom, our braised meat is unique in town. The money we make in one day is almost equivalent to half a month’s worth of odd jobs.” Liu Fang thought the same as her husband.
I hadn't thought about this before because I felt I didn't know anything, but when I went to town today, I saw that a bowl of bone broth noodles cost three coins.
Fearing that Fuman'er would be hungry, she bought the food for her daughter. She also took a bite herself, but it had no taste at all. It was just a bone that had been boiled in several pots of water and was not worth three coins at all.
"Grandma, my parents sell food to earn money." She also knows a lot of food, and she wants her mother to cook it for her.
Grandma Xu has been enjoying the benefits of selling things these past few days. With so many people in her family and so little land, they toil in the fields from dawn till dusk. That's just how the Xu family is.
Before, she would have been hesitant and timid, but for some reason, after hearing Fu Man'er's confident words, she waved her hand and immediately agreed.
“Since we’re going to sell them, let’s prepare early. Second brother’s family, your family are butchers. Take your older brother and sister-in-law to buy the pig offal later. We’ll make another pot today and sell it again tomorrow.”
Liu Fang thought the same way. If she let others know today and didn't go tomorrow, they might forget and she would have to start all over again.
"Mother, shouldn't we wait for Father to come back before discussing this?" Ma Hong was still a little uneasy, wondering if it was because her older brother and sister-in-law had made so much money from the sale, or because of the business deal itself.
"What's there to discuss? By the time he gets back, it'll be too late." Old Xu was a hands-off manager; when he came, he would only nod and say "uh-huh."
Influenced by Old Mrs. Xu's energetic and decisive nature, the Xu family members acted immediately and went about their respective tasks as arranged.
Xu Genshu sat for a while and finally heard the door open. He wondered what everyone was saying that made them so happy.
"Genshu, your brother is going out for a bit." Xu Genshan didn't even glance at him, and pulled the cart outside. Liu Fang and Ma Hong quickly followed.
He responded with an "Oh," not knowing whether the three of them had heard him.
"Genshu, your mother is going to find your father. You watch over your niece." Old Mrs. Xu told Old Xu to cut some more bamboo, then shoved Fuman'er into Xu Genshu's arms and rushed out the door.
The excitement was fleeting; Xu Genshu felt that in the blink of an eye, everyone had left, leaving him and his little niece, whom he was meeting for the first time, staring at each other.
Fu Man'er looked at her uncle, not daring to move or speak. Her grandmother said that her uncle was a scholar and would take the imperial examination to become a Xiucai (a successful candidate in the lowest level of the imperial examinations).
Why did she look at her uncle so blankly?

Under his niece's questioning gaze, Xu Genshan carried her to the kitchen and placed her on a small stool. Mingming's sister-in-law had said on the way back that it was time to go home and have lunch together.
Now it's just him left, oh no, there's also his little niece.
Although Xu Genshu is a scholar, he is not incapable of lifting heavy objects. He has changed out of his long gown and into short clothes and trousers, which makes him look more down-to-earth.
"Man'er, your uncle will have the meal ready soon. Just sit still." Fu Man'er was bored sitting there. She wanted to go out and see the goats and lambs, but as soon as her feet touched the ground, Xu Genshu spoke up.
He had little experience with children, and Fu Man'er looked very young, so he could only keep her within his sight.
"Oh." Fu Man'er drooped her ears and reluctantly withdrew her foot. Her brother had said that her uncle was the best uncle, but no, he wouldn't let her go out to play.
Xu Genshu breathed a sigh of relief when he saw her sitting down. He had seen other children run around unruly before. If that were the case, he wouldn't know whether to take care of the food in the pot or his little niece who had run away.
