Chapter 2
"The clothes are ready. Should I deliver them to you or..."
"I'll call you."
As soon as he finished speaking, he noticed that she was staring at him in a daze. Her expression was extremely surprised, mixed with indescribable emotions.
"What's wrong?"
He looked at her in surprise.
She shook her head for a long time, the moonlight shining on his face. In this dim and narrow space, it was like a dream.
I should be dead.
The car continued on the tree-lined avenue. They didn't speak again. She still didn't dare look at him. In her peripheral vision, he was still the same as he was three years ago, not as emaciated as he had been later.
The car stopped and she got out like a sleepwalker. When he pulled her, her hand trembled subconsciously.
His eyes were full of amusement and surprise.
"Send it to the door."
"No need." She said hurriedly, but soon smiled and said, "You have another appointment, don't delay."
He smiled and continued walking with her.
The way back to the house was short, but it seemed to her like it took many years.
When they really reached the door, she said, "Don't go in!"
There was a flash of surprise in his eyes, and she smiled and said, "Or, come up and have a cup of tea."
He smiled as he approached her. At the door, he took her hand, staring at her playfully. One arm held hers, the other kneading her hand. He was so close to her, so close that they could feel each other's breath and heartbeat. This familiar breath now seemed so distant and desolate.
She didn't realize how cold her hands were at that moment.
She only knew that his eyes lacked the affectionate melancholy that she was familiar with, and now he looked at her as if he were a pet.
Even though she knew he wouldn't go in, she was still afraid. She relaxed. How could he go in if he was so cautious?
After a long while, he finally whispered in her ear: "See you another day."
"OK."
She stood at the door in a daze, watching his leaving back with tearful eyes, and said in her heart: "I will never see you again."
