Chapter 83
"Open the door!"
Wang Jiazhi woke up suddenly. She could actually fall asleep while standing.
The relief rice was limited, and you couldn't get it without queuing up in the middle of the night. This rice was all hers to eat, and if she didn't get any, her aunt would scold her, and she couldn't pay for it out of her own pocket.
She felt dizzy and couldn't see the words on the blackboard during class. Only then did she realize that she had a fever.
She lay on her desk for a long time at noon, but she didn't feel any better.
The teacher noticed something was wrong with her and said, "Go lie down in my lounge."
She nodded gratefully. If she hadn't been unable to hold on any longer, she would never have gone.
As soon as she stood up, she fell down. She didn't faint, but she couldn't stand steadily.
A boy carried her to the lounge and went out to pour her a cup of hot water.
She lay there, burning with heat and a pounding headache. She couldn't sleep, and lying down felt uncomfortably uncomfortable. She tossed and turned in bed, feeling terribly uncomfortable.
After a while, the boy came back and brought her a bowl of hot soy milk and two big buns.
She shook her head.
"Eat, it will give you some strength."
She was really hungry, but she couldn't eat anything because of the fire.
After lying in a warm place for an entire afternoon and drinking some hot soy milk, she finally felt better and was able to stand up and walk back home.
The weather was very cold, but she had a burning sensation, her lips were dry and painful, and she felt light-headed as if she were walking on cotton.
She had to stop and rest after walking for a while, otherwise she might collapse and be unable to get up. It was not uncommon to see people freezing to death or starving on the streets these days. She was so poorly dressed that if she collapsed she would probably be mistaken for a dead person and no one would pay any attention to her.
As the bustling crowds of people passed by her in the busy city, she felt like a ghost floating in the human world.
She took a deep breath, squatted on the ground, and lowered her head. She thought to herself, "I think I've seen this somewhere before."
Old Yi looked out the window and saw a woman wearing an old navy blue cotton robe squatting under a sycamore tree. He couldn't see her face clearly, but she must be a very young girl.
He felt the pain in his chest again and thought that this time he really needed to see a doctor.
