Chapter 18 The Emperor's Peasant Wife 17

His fingertips were gentle, like a spring breeze across a lake, gently tracing Chen Xiaoru's cheek. The touch was as delicate and smooth as the finest silk, but his eyes were as firm as a rock. For her, he would not hesitate to make the entire court his enemy, like a lone wolf facing a pack of lions. He knew that this path would be as difficult as climbing a towering peak, that every step would be on a knife's edge, but he would never retreat. His determination was like a burning flame, blazing unyieldingly.

Chen Xiaoru slowly opened her eyes, her eyes moving, as crystal clear as the morning dew. When she saw Xuanyuan Che, a smile as sweet as peach blossoms in spring blossomed on her face: "Your Majesty, are you leaving the court?" Her voice was as clear and pleasant as the song of an oriole.

"Um."

Xuanyuan Che placed a kiss on her smooth forehead, as gentle as a dragonfly touching the water, "Did I wake you up?"

"No, I got enough sleep."

Chen Xiaoru stretched out lazily like a cat and said coquettishly, her voice as soft as honey, "Your Majesty, I'm hungry."

She exuded a faint fragrance, like pear blossoms blooming in spring, lingering at Xuanyuan Che's nose.

"Okay, I'll have breakfast with you."

Xuanyuan Che helped her sit up. Her waist was slender and soft, like a willow swaying in the wind. His eyes were full of doting, as gentle as spring water.

Breakfast arrived, the dishes meticulously prepared in the imperial kitchen emitting an alluring aroma. Chen Xiaoru devoured them with gusto, devouring them like a whirlwind, her lips smacking and making subtle smacking sounds. Xuanyuan Che, however, was preoccupied, as if weighed down by a huge rock. He would glance at her from time to time, wanting to speak but hesitant, his golden chopsticks tapping against the jade bowl with a resounding tinkle.

"Your Majesty, what's wrong with you?"

Chen Xiaoru noticed his strangeness, raised her head, and asked with concern with her clear eyes as bright as autumn water.

Xuanyuan Che hesitated for a moment, struggling like a trapped animal, but finally decided to tell her: "This morning at court, the ministers attacked me like sharks smelling blood, opposing your entry into the palace and demanding that I revoke my order."

Upon hearing this, Chen Xiaoru paused with her ivory chopsticks, making a soft "click" sound. However, her face did not show any panic, like a frightened bird. Instead, she remained calm and asked, "What did Your Majesty say?"

"Of course I will go against all odds and protect you like a pillar of support."

Xuanyuan Che held Chen Xiaoru's hand. Her hand was soft and delicate, like boneless white jade. His tone was as firm as a rock, and every word he said was resounding. "Xiaoru, don't worry. I will protect you and the child like a treasure. I won't let anyone hurt you."

Chen Xiaoru smiled, like a plum blossom blooming in winter, cold and proud, with a fox-like cunning glint in her eyes:

"I knew that Your Majesty would be like a giant pillar that would not let me down."

As she spoke, she snuggled into Xuanyuan Che's warm embrace, like a little bird leaning on its mother, and whispered softly, her voice as gentle as the spring breeze blowing through the willows, "Your Majesty, I'm not afraid of those ministers' clown-like opposition. I'm just afraid that you won't believe me."

Xuanyuan Che felt a warmth in his heart, like a ray of sunshine on a winter day. He tightened his arms and hugged her tightly. Her body was soft and fragrant, like warm jade, pressed against his chest.

"Silly boy, how could I not believe you? I believe in you as I believe in the sun, moon, stars, and our children."

The two hugged each other, silently enjoying this moment of tranquility.

Suddenly, the sound of hurried footsteps outside the palace shattered the tranquility. A guard stumbled in and knelt on the ground, his voice trembling like a leaf in the wind. "Your Majesty, this is bad! The Empress Dowager... the Empress Dowager is leading her people to the Palace of Heavenly Purity!"

Xuanyuan Che's eyes flashed, like a sword unsheathed, radiating a cold light. He suddenly stood up, his movements as swift as a cheetah, and his dragon robe fluttered with the sound of rustling. He helped Chen Xiaoru sit down and said in a deep voice:

"You wait here, I'll go take a look."

After saying this, he strode out of the hall with big steps, his steps steady and powerful, as unshakable as a mountain.

Outside the Palace of Heavenly Purity, the Empress Dowager was dressed in gorgeous clothes, her face as cold as ice. Behind her were a group of palace maids and eunuchs, as well as dozens of guards armed with weapons, looking as fierce as a tiger descending from the mountain.

"Emperor! Come out here!"

The Queen Mother's shrill voice was as harsh as a night owl, echoing in the silent palace.

Xuanyuan Che appeared at the gate of the Palace of Heavenly Purity. His face was as gloomy as water, and his eyes were as cold as stars. He swept over everyone and finally landed on the Queen Mother.

"Mother, what are you doing?"

"What are you doing? I want to ask you, have you been bewitched by that witch? Are you willing to become an enemy of the entire imperial court just for her?"

The Queen Mother's eyes widened in anger, she pointed at Xuanyuan Che, and her voice exploded like thunder.

"It's not my mother's turn to ask what I do!"

Xuanyuan Che refused to give in, his tone as hard as steel.

"Good! Good! Good!"

The Queen Mother laughed in anger. She waved her hand fiercely and shouted, "Come here, bring that witch out to me!"

Following the Empress Dowager's order, the Imperial Guards immediately took action and rushed towards the Palace of Heavenly Purity like a tide.

Xuanyuan Che's eyes flashed with coldness. He moved like a ghost, blocking the palace gate. He drew the sword at his waist, and the sword light flashed like a dancing silver snake. He said coldly:

"Who dares! Why do you want to rebel?"

The Imperial Guards were overwhelmed by the sudden, chilling aura emanating from Xuanyuan Che, as if an invisible hand were gripping their throats. For a moment, they froze in place like clay sculptures or wooden carvings, their feet rooted to the spot, not daring to move an inch. They looked at each other, bewildered, their palms clenched in sweat as their weapons reflected the sunlight, gleaming with a blinding glare.
