At the same time, on the other side, Chen family
Mother Chen pushed open the gate of her own courtyard with a creaky sound and shouted in a loud voice: "My daughter, my daughter, mother is back!"
The room was silent, without any response.
Mother Chen sighed deeply and slowed down her pace, muttering to herself as she walked: "How come these two father and daughter are both the same? They're always away from home."
Her heart began to churn, and she kept repeating: "My daughter used to be so well-behaved and sensible! Alas, it's all her father's fault. He led her astray. Now, she's nowhere to be seen all day long!"
Just as Chen's mother was lost in thought, there was a knock on the door.
A rough male voice called out from outside the door, "Is Chen Laizi home?"
When Chen's mother heard the voice, her heart skipped a beat and she thought to herself: Which debt collector has come to our house again?
"Is Chen Laizi home?" The shouts from the door continued, each one louder than the last, making Chen's mother's head buzz. She was in a state of panic. Besides debt collectors, who else would be so "enthusiastic" about calling Chen Laizi's name these days? She wished she could find a hole to crawl into, but she was afraid that if they really were debt collectors, they would break in directly if she didn't open the door, which would be even more troublesome.
Just when Chen's mother was so upset that she wanted to plug her ears, another voice came: "Your daughter asked me to deliver something!"
Mother Chen was stunned. Daughter? Sending something? Her heart plummeted back to her stomach, and hope instantly rekindled. It turned out that her daughter had sent something back!
Chen's mother immediately put on a smile and ran to open the door, faster than a rabbit. As she ran, she muttered to herself, "This damn girl, she didn't even bother to tell me beforehand when she was sending something. She made me so worried!" But what good thing was it? Was it food or something useful?
The gate creaked open, and Chen's mother poked her head out, her face full of smiles, her eyes almost narrowed into slits, and she kept muttering, "It's coming, it's coming, stop shouting, it's like you're asking for my life..."
Before she finished speaking, she saw the person standing outside the door - a big and strong man with a bullock cart loaded with several sacks.
Chen's mother didn't recognize this man. The smile on her face froze immediately, and she asked warily, "Who are you? Who are you looking for?"
The man grinned, revealing a row of yellow teeth, and said in a muffled voice, "I'm a handyman in a grocery store. The owner asked me to deliver the rice your daughter bought." As he spoke, he pointed to the sacks on the ox cart.
When Mother Chen heard this, her eyes lit up and her wrinkles on her face were filled with smiles. She quickly stepped aside to make way: "Oh, is that so! Come in, come in! Help me move these in! I'm just an old woman, and I can't move all this!"
The man didn't say much, just picked up a bag of rice and walked into the yard.
Mother Chen followed behind, looking at the sturdy sack, feeling very happy, and kept saying, "My daughter is so good!" Then she thought again and smiled happily, "My daughter is really filial!"
The man went back and forth a few times and quickly moved all the rice into the kitchen.
"Well, Aunt Chen, now that all the rice has been moved, I'll leave first." The man wiped his sweat and said.
"Okay, okay! Take care!" Chen's mother smiled as she saw the man out. She watched him drive away in the ox cart and then slammed the gate shut.
She turned back to the kitchen and looked at the overflowing rice bags. She felt relieved and hummed a little tune, muttering to herself, "My daughter is so good. She knows how to care for her mother!"
"Mom! Mom! I'm back!" Chen Xiaoru's voice came in before she even entered the yard, as cheerful as a bird returning to its nest.
Mother Chen was overjoyed when she heard this, and the wrinkles on her face smoothed out. She responded, "I'm here! I'm here! My daughter, you're finally back!" As she spoke, she hurried out from the kitchen to greet him.
As soon as she walked out of the kitchen, she saw her husband Chen Laizi entering the yard one after another. The nameless anger in Chen's mother's heart suddenly jumped up!
This bastard, when my daughter came home yesterday, there was nothing to eat, so she just ate a few cold steamed buns. It's all this bastard's fault! I'll beat you to death, you wasteful bastard!
Chen's mother was furious and picked up the broom from the corner and hit Chen Laizi in the face.
"You dead ghost! You still remember to come back! I'll beat you to death!" Chen's mother cursed while waving a broom.
When Chen Laizi saw this, he was so scared that he dared not stay. He slipped into the kitchen, slammed the door, and fastened the bolt at the back with a click. Only then did he escape the disaster.
He put the things in his hand on the stove, then he let out a long sigh and patted his chest with lingering fear.
"Oh, you crazy woman, how could you want to murder your own husband!" Chen Laizi shouted in shock while hiding in the kitchen. Through the crack in the door, he saw Chen's mother still walking around in the yard with a broom in her hand, and he stomped his feet in anger.
Only then did he notice the several bulging sacks piled on the stove. He walked over curiously, untied one of the bags, and the aroma of rice wafted into his nose.
"This... so much rice?" Chen Laizi's eyes widened. He hadn't seen so much white rice for a long time!
"Chen Laizi, you bastard, open the door for me! What kind of man are you if you hide in there? I'm going to beat you to death today!" Chen's mother continued to yell and curse. She didn't dare to be so arrogant in front of Chen Laizi because Chen Xiaoru was at home. If she was not at home, she would not dare to do that.
Chen Laizi couldn't think about his mother at the moment. His mind was full of these bags of rice. He wondered: Where did this come from? Could it be... my daughter bought it?
