"Auntie." Deng Wei first spoke politely, then firmly.
"Xiao Wei, I saw all the messages you sent to your dad." Han Yue went straight to the point; she didn't like beating around the bush.
Deng Wei was stunned.
But he quickly regained his composure and said, "Now that we've seen it, let's talk it out."
“Yes, that’s what I think too. Your dad did give me gifts, but it’s impossible that I cheated him out of his money. I think it’s normal for couples to exchange gifts.” Han Yue said confidently.
"So you're spending my dad's money." Deng Wei guessed that Han Yue was a wealthy woman in the past, so she probably wouldn't care about ordinary things, and luxury goods weren't cheap.
"We exchange gifts, and I've never asked for one. I give him gifts too. If you insist on calculating the cost, I definitely haven't spent less." Han Yue just doesn't understand. Does giving a gift mean you're cheating him out of money? Not to mention couples, even friends give each other gifts.
Why is Deng Wei so petty?
"You can choose not to buy it, and he won't buy it from you. If you sell it to him, he can buy it back from you, and in the end, all those things will belong to you."
Han Yue was taken aback by Deng Wei's words. Her eyes widened in surprise: "Deng Wei, do you really think that way about me? How could the things I bought for your father end up belonging to me? His clothes and watch are all men's items. What use would they be to me?"
"The clothes are useless, but what about the watch and the gold chain?" Deng Wei pressed aggressively.
"I didn't spend a single extra penny of his money, believe it or not," Han Yue said before hanging up the phone.
"Did you hear that? It's all about spending money," Zhou Man concluded.
“She’s nitpicking with me, saying she spent money too. She spent money on her own, and my dad spent money on my own. Dad used to be so frugal. Judging from what she said, I guess Dad gave her quite a few gifts.” Deng Wei agreed with his wife.
"Deng Wei, don't worry about it. We're so far away, we can't control Dad. Just keep it to yourself." Zhou Man sighed.
After finishing her call, Han Yue calmed down outside for a while before coming in.
Fu Jingchen is petty, but he also doesn't know how to check accounts.
She hates it most when her children check their parents' accounts.
It's one thing to investigate, but to actually frame her? Where does Deng Wei get his confidence? Doesn't he know his family's financial situation? It's not certain who's spending whose money.
Old Deng was afraid that Han Yue would argue with her son on the phone, so he would come out to check on her every now and then.
After going out several times, they finally saw Han Yue return.
She was expressionless.
"Xiaoyue, did that brat upset you? Don't believe a word he says." Old Deng sided with Han Yue unconditionally.
"He must be furious with me too. He's asking me what gift you gave me. Friends exchange gifts, and even neighbors who haven't known each other long will exchange gifts, right? Is it really necessary to talk about this? We're just trying to live a serious life together. Does giving each other gifts mean you're cheating me out of money?" Han Yue felt that the word "cheating me out of money" was particularly irritating.
"You're right. That brat. It's a good thing he's not in the country, otherwise I would have blocked him with a ping-pong paddle. I'll never answer his calls again." Old Deng gritted his teeth.
"Take a ping-pong paddle and hit him?" Han Yue laughed upon hearing this. "How can you hit a kid that big? Don't worry, I'm just angry right now, I'll be fine soon. It's understandable that children worry about their parents being scammed when they're older and in blended families. There have been cases like that in the news where elderly people's pensions were swindled away." Despite her anger, Han Yue still expressed her understanding in the end.
"Xiaoyue, you're such a good person." Han Yue's words touched Old Deng. Compared to his unreliable son, Han Yue was much more considerate.
"We've lived to this age, there's no need to argue with them." Han Yue had already explained, and whether Deng Wei would believe her was his business; she wouldn't say anything more.
"Don't worry, I will definitely criticize Xiao Wei and won't let you be misunderstood," Old Deng said firmly.
"It's alright, no need to mention it. I have a clear conscience." Han Yue smiled at Lao Deng. "Go inside."
——
When she got home that evening, Han Yue went to her daughter-in-law's house.
She wanted to ask Rong Yan if what she had done was right.
Rongyan and her mother-in-law were chatting in the study when Xiao Ke brought over some fruit.
Han Yue told Rong Yan what had happened.
The woman scoffed after hearing this, "How can Lao Deng's family be compared to ours? Have they gone mad from living abroad? Do you think we'd benefit from their family's influence?"
"That's what I said too. Deng Wei and Zhou Man are just ordinary office workers. Last month, Deng Wei asked Lao Deng to transfer 800,000 yuan to him. He even has to rely on his parents for 800,000 yuan. How dare he say I cheated him?" Han Yue and Rong Yan had the same first reaction.
“Mom, you did the right thing. You’ve already explained it to him yourself. Whether he believes you or not is his business. There’s no need to bring it up again. Old Deng is on your side, which is good.” Rong Yan supported her mother-in-law’s approach.
"Okay, I was just afraid of being too caught up in the situation to see things clearly. Since you say I did the right thing, I'm relieved. Get some rest, I'm going home." Han Yue stayed for a while and then went back to her place.
When Fu Jingsheng saw them come out, he went up to them and said, "Mom, take care."
Han Yue turned around with a smile: "Okay."
Fu Jingsheng was taken aback by his mother's expression: "Is my mom in a good mood? Why is she being so nice to me today?"
Rong Yan put her arm around her husband's shoulder and said, "Maybe the more I look at you, the more pleasing you seem to me."
Rong Yan knew the whole story. Presumably, her mother-in-law had already compared Fu Jingsheng and Deng Wei in her mind. Han Yue always said that Fu Jingsheng didn't talk to her much and didn't care about her, but he was much better than Deng Wei.
"I'm a little scared." Fu Jingsheng showed his wife his arm, which was covered in goosebumps.
Rong Yan slapped him hard: "What are you afraid of? You're really something. When Mom scolds you, you talk about her, and now she's smiling at you and talking back."
"Don't you think she changed too quickly? That smile, um, you know? It's creepy. I always feel like she's trying to lower my guard, and then..." I don't dare to think about it.
"Cough, Fu Jingsheng, you're so dramatic. She's the mother, how could she have any other motives? She just compared you to Old Deng's son and found you to be too good." Rong Yan blurted out.
"So that's how it is," Fu Jingsheng suddenly realized.
"Why can't you tell me this directly? Are you afraid I'll check her accounts?" Fu Jingsheng was jealous. His own mother always told Rong Yan everything, but he, her son, was being ignored.
"Jealous again? Women can talk things out. Besides, I'm a psychologist, so I'm good at analyzing other people's psychology. It's better if you tell me. Mom didn't ask me to keep it from you. She's just in a hurry to go back, so she didn't tell you anymore," Rong Yan explained on behalf of her mother-in-law.
Fu Jingsheng nodded reluctantly.
After Han Yue got home, Lao Deng heated up a glass of milk and handed it to her. Afraid that his wife was still angry, he specially read a few jokes online to her.
"Old Deng, take a break. I'm in a good mood. Seeing you so supportive of me makes me really happy." Han Yue was sincerely grateful to Old Deng.
“Isn’t it only right that I side with you? The children have their own lives, but you and I are the ones who will rely on each other and spend the rest of our lives together.” Old Deng’s eyes were sincere.
"Okay, Lao Deng, finish your milk and rest. Let's put this behind us."
