Hu Mingmei reached out and took her hand.
After the two of them made it clear that they were going to get engaged, Bai Nuo felt no more pressure. Since she was going to marry this person anyway, she just let him lead her.
Pedestrians hurried by on the street, and various vendors lined both sides of the road. When they saw a good-looking couple walking hand in hand past them, they couldn't help but take a second look.
"Let's have dinner at our house!" Bai Nuo looked down at Hu Mingmei's hand, which was holding hers tightly. His hand was bigger, and her small hand was held firmly in his, their fingers intertwined. Their shadows stretched out long and overlapped, making them look like one person.
Bai Nuo felt very sweet.
"You cook?" Hu Mingmei turned his head to look at her. Bai Nuo could only see his perfect profile, and her heart was pounding.
"Hmm..." Bai Nuo nodded. "I'll cook."
Hu Mingmei chuckled and named a few dishes for her.
The two went to the market together and bought the vegetables that everyone wanted to eat. Hu Mingmei went back to San Niang Cloth Shop to pick up Jiang Qiao'er and Lu Yinglong, while Bai Nuo went back to drive the carriage. The two agreed to meet at the entrance of the town.
A gentle breeze blew by, silently nourishing everything. When Bai Nuo drove the carriage to the entrance of the town, he could see a large crowd gathered in front of him, completely blocking the entrance.
Hu Mingmei hadn't arrived yet, so Bai Nuo carefully drove the carriage over.
Because there were so many people here, Bai Nuo was afraid of bumping into other people.
But once she arrived, Bai Nuo couldn't help but take a few more glances.
There are people selling themselves at the entrance to the town.
The one who sold herself was none other than the young girl who came to their store to buy a bracelet today.
Compared to her clean and simple appearance during the day, the only word to describe this little girl now is "disheveled".
Her black hair hung loosely down her back and front. Her skirt was gone, replaced by a white cloth top and black pants. Her cheeks were dirty and a little swollen. A sign for selling herself was hanging in front of her. Three taels of silver could take her home as a maid, and ten taels of silver could make her a concubine!
The girl kept her head down, whether out of embarrassment because of the injuries on her face and the dirt on her body, or because of the contents of the sign hanging around her neck.
Bai Nuo sat in the carriage watching her, feeling a pang of sadness.
She could roughly guess why the young girl was selling herself here—it was all for those three taels of silver.
Bai Nuo could roughly guess what had happened to their family. It turned out that the girl had stolen money from home to buy the big jewelry she wanted, but her family found out and came to Duobaoge to return the goods. They were unwilling, but Duobaoge was reluctant to spend the three taels of silver, so they had no choice but to sell this troublemaker.
At least it can make up for some of the losses. If someone takes a liking to her, and she's lucky enough to go home with him as a concubine, then she'll still be making a profit.
The girl seemed to sense that Bai Nuo was looking at her, and suddenly raised her head to look in Bai Nuo's direction. When she saw Bai Nuo sitting in the carriage, her eyes shone with a strange light.
Bai Nuo was no savior. Seeing the girl's gaze turn like that, he immediately looked away and silently turned the carriage around.
"Wait!" the girl shouted from behind her carriage. Bai Nuo wouldn't stop, but the girl immediately ran to the front of her carriage, stretched out her hand, and looked at her stubbornly.
The black horse was a spirited horse. When it saw someone blocking its way, it stopped walking without Bai Nuo having to say anything.
After the little girl stretched out her arms, the words on her chest appeared even larger—black, broken, as if written with charcoal.
"Miss!" Bai Nuo didn't get out of the car. Instead, she sat up inside and looked at the young girl indifferently. "Excuse me, you're blocking the way!"
"I won't allow it!" The girl frowned at her. "I have something to tell you!"
The people around them quickly gathered, forming a circle and placing the two of them in the middle! Bai Nuo had no intention of joining the crowd or becoming the center of attention. "We have nothing to say!"
"You haven't listened yet, how do you know we have nothing to say?" The girl refused to listen and wouldn't move aside! "If you don't listen to me today, I won't move. If you want to leave, let your carriage step over me!"
Quite stubborn!
There were people all around her, and she realized she couldn't move any further, so she said, "Go ahead and say it!"
"You have to give me three taels of silver to buy me back!" the girl said through gritted teeth, as if she were being fierce, yet also as if it were a matter of course.
That look in her eyes made it seem like she owed her something in vain.
Bai Nuo immediately laughed in anger, clasping her hands in a fist salute. Bai Nuo found it extremely funny, "Why should I?"
"Just because you sold me that bracelet!" the girl shouted. "If you hadn't sold me that bracelet, I wouldn't be forced into prostitution by my father today!"
Bai Nuo heard the girl's first half of the sentence and felt that she was a little hesitant, but the second half was full of energy. Obviously, the girl thought the same thing when she said it.
"Little girl, I have a few questions I want to ask you!" Bai Nuo felt that she shouldn't argue with a child, so she decided to reason with her instead.
“I’m the same age as you!” The girl looked up at her, her voice loud and clear as if she had a battery in her throat. “I might even be older than you. You can’t call me a little girl, because you yourself are a little girl!”
