Time flies, and the New Year is just around the corner. At the end of October, Bai Nuo finally saw the first snowfall she had ever seen here. Snowflakes fluttered and fell gently for many days.
Amidst this snow-covered landscape, they welcomed Jiang San Niang and Lu Ying's wedding.
The day was sunny and clear. The snow that had been falling every day had finally stopped the day before. At this hour, it was almost 3 AM. The sky was dotted with stars, and the Third Sister's Cloth Shop was brightly lit and bustling with activity.
"Do we really have to get up this early?" Jiang San Niang was still sleepy when she was dragged out of bed, looking at the people in front of her with her eyes half-closed. "It's still very early before dawn!"
Bai Nuo smiled, realizing that getting up at this hour was a bit early. "How about we sleep a little longer?"
"Sleep? What are you sleeping for?" Aunt Liu had come over the night before and was currently in Jiang San Niang's room. When she heard Bai Nuo say this, she immediately glared at her, sat down on Jiang San Niang's bed, picked up a coat and draped it over Jiang San Niang's shoulders. "It's still too late to get up at this hour. Get up quickly, or you'll be late."
"Do we have to get up this early?" Bai Nuo had never experienced a wedding like this before, and she quickly asked, "But isn't the auspicious time noon?" If you calculate it that way, there's still plenty of time.
"It takes time to wash, dress, and say goodbye to parents. When we were poor, we could just wear a red dress and be done with it. But now that we are better off, we can't be so casual. Naturally, we want our daughter to have a grand wedding. Daughter, when you get married, it will be just like this."
Bai Nuo, who was about to get married, felt a chill run down her spine.
Fortunately, everyone here was a woman, so there were no taboos. Aunt Liu dug Jiang San Niang out of bed and helped her tie her bellyband. Because of her pregnancy, Jiang San Niang was very sleepy. From the moment these people came in, she only said one sentence and then kept her eyes closed, sleeping the whole time.
"Qiao'er, is the hot water ready?" Aunt Liu asked as she helped Jiang San Niang put on her undergarments.
Jiang Qiao'er quickly replied, "Auntie, it's ready. Shall we bring it in now?"
Aunt Liu nodded, and at the same time instructed Bai Nuo, "Girl, you're just idling around anyway, why don't you go out and bring the bath tub in?"
Bai Nuo and Jiang Qiao'er rushed over.
Aunt Liu whispered to Jiang San Niang, who was still unconscious, "Miss Jiang, wake up, it's time for a bath..."
Jiang San Niang barely opened her eyes.
After Bai Nuo and Jiang Qiao'er brought in the hot water, Aunt Liu put Jiang San Niang into the bathtub and washed her thoroughly from head to toe. After the bath, she personally dried Jiang San Niang's hair with a thick towel.
Bai Nuo brought over a burner filled with incense and personally dried Jiang San Niang's hair.
"Alright, bride, come and have some breakfast. You all should too, come and have some, otherwise you won't be able to eat anything all day." Bai Nuo had just dried Jiang San Niang's hair when Aunt Liu brought over the breakfast.
Several women surrounded Jiang San Niang and led her to sit down at the table.
"Third Sister, you..." The five women were having breakfast in Jiang San Niang's room when the door was suddenly pushed open, and Lu Ying rushed in. Seeing so many people, he didn't say what he wanted to say—because as soon as Aunt Liu saw him, she stood up and pushed him out, "Go away, why aren't you tidying yourself up at your place? What are you doing here? Get out! Don't you know that the bride and groom can't meet before the wedding?"
Lu Ying stared intently at Jiang San Niang. Even as Liu Da Niang pushed him out, he kept his eyes glued to her, never looking away. His naive and clueless demeanor made Bai Nuo and the others cover their mouths and laugh.
Jiang San Niang lowered her head shyly.
Granny Liu was very strong, and Lu Ying had been watching Jiang San Niang the whole time, so she was no match for her. Granny Liu pushed her out easily. Just as they were about to leave, Lu Ying called out loudly, "San Niang... San Niang, wear more clothes today. It's cold today, don't get cold!"
Bai Nuo and the others covered their mouths and laughed again.
Jiang San Niang lowered her head slightly.
Lu Ying then said, "Third Sister, you look so beautiful today!"
Bai Nuo and the others laughed even louder.
Jiang San Niang lowered her head even further.
Aunt Liu finally chased Lu Ying out, slammed the door shut, bolted it, and turned to the girls, saying, "You all better keep a close eye on this door today. No man is allowed to come in until the auspicious hour when the bride gets into the bridal sedan chair, do you hear me?"
The girls answered in unison, "We heard you."
After everyone quickly finished breakfast, Aunt Liu brought hot water for Jiang San Niang to rinse her mouth, and then began to help Jiang San Niang with her makeup—Jiang San Niang's makeup was done with Bai Nuo's help.
Because they needed to see the wedding dress before deciding on the makeup, these people helped Jiang San Niang put on the red wedding dress first. Lu Ying was right; the weather was indeed very cold today. Jiang San Niang was pregnant and couldn't afford to be cold. Fortunately, they didn't have much, just thermal underwear. Jiang San Niang wore two thermal underwear layers and a pair of woolen pants underneath. Jiang San Niang was slender, and although she was pregnant, she wasn't showing yet. The elaborate red wedding dress didn't make her look bulky, and it wasn't obvious that she was wearing too much.
With her skillful hands, Aunt Liu managed to make the bright red wedding dress perfectly tidy.
