Peony shook her head. "No, there's no news from the gatekeeper. Young Madam, why don't you rest first? Second Master might have been delayed by something and might be sleeping at the shop!"
Although Mudan knew that the probability was very low, since they came back, Hu Mingmei had only had Bai Nuo by his side and had never had anyone else. They had always lived together and neither of them had a separate room. Hu Mingmei had never slept in the study.
Not to mention spending the night outside.
But since Hu Mingmei didn't come back, this was the only possibility that Mudan had considered.
"What time is it?" Bai Nuo asked, stretching and feeling very tired.
"It's past midnight!" Peony asked softly. "Young Madam, shall I serve you a bath?"
Bai Nuo nodded, picked up the sewing kit, and walked inside.
Peony hurriedly went to call Peony over to prepare things for Bai Nuo's bath.
After taking a shower, Bai Nuo called Mudan and Shaoyao out and told them to go and rest. She then went back to bed in her pajamas with a book.
There was a note on the bed.
Bai Nuo looked at the note on the bed with some confusion. When did this note get here? Did she leave it? But that shouldn't be the case. When Mudan made her bed today, there was nothing on it.
If she had left anything behind, Peony should have told her.
While pondering the question, Bai Nuo opened the note and took a look. Upon seeing it, her face turned pale, her head buzzed, and she stumbled out.
Peony and Peony slept in the adjacent side room. Usually, they could hear Bai Nuo calling them, but this time Bai Nuo made quite a commotion, which startled them, and they quickly came out.
"What's wrong, young mistress?" Peony asked.
Bai Nuo asked, "Has Second Master returned?"
Peony shook her head. Bai Nuo should know better than them whether Hu Mingmei had returned or not. Since Bai Nuo hadn't seen Hu Mingmei, then Hu Mingmei hadn't returned.
"Where is Xia Donglai?" Bai Nuo asked again.
Peony shook her head again.
Bai Nuo, unconvinced, asked again, "He hasn't come back all day?"
Seeing Bai Nuo's serious expression, Mudan didn't dare to delay any longer. She said, "I'll just go ask the gatekeeper!" and then ran out.
Bai Nuo stood gripping the door frame, waiting at the doorway, her fingers turning white. Seeing Bai Nuo like this, Shao Yao couldn't help but feel anxious too.
A moment later, Peony ran back, and Bai Nuo hurriedly went out to greet her, "Have they been back?"
Peony shook her head.
That's right. If Xia Donglai and Hu Mingmei came back, they would always come to see her. Even if they didn't have time to stay, Hu Mingmei would come to see her and say a few words. If Xia Donglai came back on his own, he would also come to tell her what Hu Mingmei was doing and why she couldn't come back.
