Chapter 4 Even if you don't want to live, you can't starve.

After Bai Dalin and Ms. Chen left, the old woman, as usual, threw another tantrum. This old woman had an exceptionally fiery temper, but her love for the original owner of this body was truly genuine.

Bai Nuo and Bai Yu both calmly watched the old woman throw a tantrum. Bai Yu, being a straightforward man, didn't know how to comfort her, so he just watched. Although Bai Nuo felt sorry for the grandmother and grandson's plight, they were strangers to her now, and she didn't know how to comfort them.

The young woman, who had a perfectly good life with impeccable morals, suddenly died and ended up in this kind of place. She didn't even know how the original owner died and how she took her place. She was hopeless and had no thoughts left, so naturally she couldn't muster the fighting spirit to coax an old man.

So the two siblings watched quietly, and Bai Nuo even dodged a spittle that the old woman was spitting at.

Half an hour later.

The old woman kept berating Bai Dalin and Ms. Chen, showing no sign of stopping. Bai Yu couldn't help but ask first, "Grandma, have you finished cursing?"

puff!

Bai Nuo almost laughed out loud when she heard this. Although she was also impatient to listen, she didn't dare to ask. She didn't expect Bai Yu to be impatient as well.

The old woman was getting carried away with her rant when Bai Yu said that, and she immediately stopped talking. She picked up a pillow and threw it at him, angrily saying, "You brat, can't you stand listening to an old woman?"

"No," Bai Yu retorted silently. "I just want to get the medicine quickly. If you haven't finished cursing, keep cursing. My sister is listening. I'm leaving."

Then he really did turn around and leave, but the old woman called out to him sharply, "Wait a minute, where did you get the money? Where did you steal it from?"

Their family had long been broke. If they hadn't been broke, she wouldn't have had to go up the mountain to chop firewood to sell, which led to her falling and injuring her foot.

Bai Yu's face turned bright red as he loudly retorted, "I didn't steal it."

However, he couldn't give a clear explanation and could only stand at the door with a flushed face. Seeing him like this, the old woman was convinced that Bai Yu had stolen something. She was furious and said with disappointment, "I told you not to steal, but you wouldn't listen. We'd rather starve than steal." Of course, she couldn't ask Bai Dalin and Mrs. Chen for money either.

At the same time, the old woman tried to stand up and pounce on Bai Yu, but because her foot was injured, she fell down as soon as she stood up, and Bai Nuo quickly caught her.

Bai Yu stood there with his lips pursed, neither refuting nor explaining.

"Chen Zhi hit me, and Nuonuo hit him back." Bai Nuo sighed and blurted out this sentence out of the blue. A normal person really doesn't know how to pretend to be the original body.

"Nono, did that thug hit you?" Bai Nuo's seemingly random question successfully attracted the old lady's attention. Out of the corner of her eye, Bai Nuo noticed that Bai Yu had taken the opportunity to run away. She felt a little sad. Bai Yu was only nine years old, but he had already become a rigid adult who was busy making a living.

The old woman examined Bai Nuo from head to toe. Bai Nuo gave a blank explanation, also mentioning that the money was something she had stolen from Chen Zhi, not something Bai Yu had stolen. Finally, Bai Nuo added blankly, "If Chen Zhi hits me again, I'll hit him back to protect Grandma." Her eyes were firm and her expression sincere.

"Good child." The old woman scooped Bai Nuo into her arms, her eyes welling up with tears. "You've gone through so much trouble."

In the village of Sugarcane, everyone thought Bai Nuo was a fool, but there was one exception: Grandma. Grandma always believed that Bai Nuo was a smart child, just that he hadn't shown it yet.

"Gurgle." Grandma held Bai Nuo in her arms, and Bai Nuo couldn't struggle. But at that moment, Bai Nuo's stomach rumbled at an inopportune time. Grandma looked up at her, and Bai Nuo said shyly, "Grandma, I'm hungry."

The old woman's face lit up with heartache as she coaxed, "Sweetie, just bear with it. There will be food when your little brother comes back."

Where is there any food left? There's only some oil and salt left at home, nothing else. Will Bai Yu buy anything? Bai Nuo doesn't know, but she doesn't entrust the task of feeding herself to Bai Yu.

Even if she didn't want to live anymore, she couldn't starve herself. It was good that Bai Yu would buy things for her, but she still had to find a way to eat her fill.

While she obediently nodded, Bai Nuo took advantage of the old woman's inattention and ran out. Although the original owner of this body was not very intelligent, she had one advantage: she could remember everything she had seen. Therefore, she easily arrived at a riverbank.

The river flows gently, and the grass is lush and green; the environment is exceptionally beautiful.

In no time, Bai Nuo had found quite a few edible wild vegetables and even a nest of wild duck eggs. The reason Bai Nuo was able to find these things so quickly was thanks to the fact that she had read a plant encyclopedia beforehand; she knew which plants were edible and which were not.

He didn't take all the wild duck eggs; he left one for the mother duck. Then he used his clothes to carry the wild vegetables and duck eggs back home.

I originally wanted to catch two more fish, but then I remembered that Grandma had twisted her ankle and couldn't eat meat. Besides, Grandma didn't have much oil or salt, so I couldn't bear to use that little bit of oil to cook fish. But fish doesn't taste good without oil, so I had to give up.

After taking the things back, as she passed the entrance to Bai Dalin's courtyard, a strong aroma of meat wafted out. Bai Nuo paused, then took the things and went into her "home".

When they got home, Bai Yu was already back. There was a fire burning in the house, and a small earthenware pot was on top of it. Bai Yu must have bought the medicine and started brewing it for his grandmother.

Thinking about it, Bai Nuo looked at the old woman's injured foot and, sure enough, it was wrapped in a white cloth. The grandmother and grandson were very surprised to see Bai Nuo carrying a bag of things back.

Bai Yu leaned closer to look and, seeing the nest of duck eggs in Bai Nuo's arms, swallowed hard and asked in a low voice, "Where did these come from?"

"I found it on the riverbank," Bai Nuo said softly.

"That's wonderful!" The old woman beamed and clapped her hands happily. "Ayu bought flour, now we can have a good meal."

"Give it to me!" Bai Yu snatched the duck eggs from Bai Nuo's arms, washed them with water, and put them in a pot to boil. Bai Nuo rolled up her sleeves and began cooking her first meal since arriving here.

The wild vegetables were washed, chopped, and mixed with flour. Salt was added to make a wild vegetable paste. Bai Nuo washed the pan, brushed it with oil, poured in the wild vegetable paste, and made wild vegetable pancakes. The fragrant and crispy taste was quite good. The three of them, grandfather, grandmother, and grandson, each ate three duck eggs with the wild vegetable pancakes and were quite full.

However, Bai Nuo was very worried. The neighbors next door were eating soup and meat and wearing gold and silver, but here even the quilts were tattered. It was okay when it was hot, but what would happen when it got cold?
