"Did you make that car that the old lady was riding in?" Hu Mingmei asked again. "That car is very convenient." In the past, paralyzed patients could only lie in bed after they could no longer walk, but with this car, it's much more convenient. They can go wherever they want, as long as someone is by their side.
"That's not a car, that's a wheelchair!" Bai Nuo said calmly, ignoring Hu Mingmei and what she was saying, and quickly started making dinner.
The first dish was braised fish. Bai Nuo first started stewing the winter melon and lean pork soup. Then she sliced ginger, crushed garlic, diced scallions, and made a small bowl of sauce with soy sauce, oil, and cooking wine. Then she heated up a pot, poured in an appropriate amount of oil, and first added the marinated ribs coated in flour. After frying the ribs until golden brown on both sides, she took them out and started frying the fish.
Set the ribs aside, and after frying the fat fish until golden brown, take them out as well. Bai Nuo poured out some of the remaining oil, leaving a little oil at the bottom. He then added minced garlic and ginger slices to sauté until fragrant, poured in the prepared soy sauce, added a small bowl of water, put the fat fish in, covered the pot, and simmered until boiling before turning up the heat to reduce the sauce.
After placing it on a plate, Bai Nuo sprinkled chopped green onions on top as a garnish, and a plate of braised fish with perfect color, aroma, and taste was ready.
Bai Nuo also made braised pork ribs using the same method.
Bai Nuo can cook many dishes, but she has never made Kung Pao Chicken before. She has only seen others make it. But now A Yu wants to eat it and specifically asked for it, so Bai Nuo had no choice but to bite the bullet and do it. She chopped the whole chicken into small pieces, put them in a large bowl, added salt, white wine, eggs and flour, and mixed them well to coat the chicken. Then she took a small bowl, poured in flour and water, mixed it into a cornstarch slurry, added soy sauce, mixed it well, and set it aside for later use.
Bai Nuo made this dish according to his memory. The first step was to add twice as much oil as you would use for stir-frying and heat it to 60% of its maximum temperature. Then, he added the chicken pieces and took them out when the chicken lost its moisture and became firm.
The second step was for Bai Nuo to fry some peanuts.
Third, leave some oil in the pan and sauté the chili peppers until fragrant—since there were no dried chili peppers left, add minced ginger and garlic and sauté until fragrant. Then add the chicken pieces and the prepared sauce, stir-fry evenly until fragrant, then add the peanuts, stir-fry evenly, sprinkle with some sesame seeds, and then remove from the pan.
It's still garnished with chopped green onions.
The Kung Pao Chicken filled two whole plates, and as soon as it came out of the pot, the whole kitchen was filled with its aroma.
Hu Mingmei stood at the door with his arms crossed, watching. The aroma wafted into his nose, whetting his appetite. To be honest, he hadn't eaten anything all day, and now, smelling the fragrance, his stomach immediately started rumbling.
Hearing such an unpleasant sound coming from his stomach, Hu Mingmei's face darkened instantly. He only breathed a sigh of relief when he saw that Bai Nuo hadn't noticed.
"Wow!" At this moment, the sound of a carriage rang out in the courtyard. Hu Mingmei turned around and saw a boy with a cloth bag slung over his shoulder running down from the carriage and then running towards him—or rather, the kitchen.
As soon as the child ran in, he rushed to the Kung Pao Chicken, took a big sip, then picked up a piece and put it in his mouth. Only after eating it could he say, "Sister's is so delicious. It's even better than Auntie's." Although Auntie's Kung Pao Chicken was also called that, it didn't have much flavor and was far inferior to his sister's.
Lu Ying and another woman also got out of the car.
"Second Master!" Lu Ying saw Hu Mingmei standing tall at the door and walked over to him, asking in a low voice, "Is he still alright?"
"It's alright!" Hu Mingmei said calmly. "Just call me Big Brother from now on."
"Sister, what you made is so delicious! Also, that brother just now knows martial arts, and he promised to teach me!" Lu Ying wanted to say something, but was interrupted by Bai Yu's cheers. Seeing Bai Nuo looking over, she had no choice but to shut up.
"Don't let it interfere with your studies!" Bai Nuo said calmly. "Go out, I still need to cook. The braised fish and braised pork ribs you wanted are ready. Take them to the main room!"
Aunt Liu also went into the kitchen to help, but the Bai family's kitchens were not very big. With three people inside and two more standing at the door, it suddenly felt very cramped, so Bai Nuo chased them all away.
After everyone was gone, Bai Nuo quickly stir-fried some vegetables, called over Aunt Liu to bring the winter melon and lean pork soup into the main room, and then the Bai family started their meal.
Bai Yu sat down happily in a chair, and Grandma and Aunt Liu also sat down to the side. Just as everyone was about to eat, Bai Yu said loudly, "Wait a minute, not everyone is here yet."
Everyone looked at him strangely.
Bai Yu ran out and pulled Hu Mingmei and Lu Ying, who were lingering outside the door, inside and sat them down in chairs. "Now that we have two older brothers, everyone's here. Let's eat!"
