Hu Mingmei hadn't had a meal like this in a long time. How many years had it been since the family had eaten together like this? It seemed that ever since his mother passed away, he had been eating alone. At that time, his father would occasionally come to visit him, but most of the time Hu Mingmei ate by himself. After his father also went to join his mother, Hu Mingmei had never felt warmth again.
So this was the first time in many years that he had eaten with his family like this. However, since they were a family, and he and Lu Ying were outsiders, this scene made Hu Mingmei feel somewhat uncomfortable.
Moreover, this family didn't seem to have any concept of hierarchy. A servant ate with them, and the servant didn't seem to mind at all, eating with relish and occasionally putting food on the boy's plate.
Everyone enjoyed the meal, especially Bai Yu, who kept praising how delicious everything was. No one was unhappy except for Hu Mingmei, who didn't have much of an appetite because she wasn't used to the food.
"Brother, don't you like the food my sister makes?" After dinner, before the pots and pans on the table had been cleared away, Bai Yu asked Hu Mingmei. Everyone else had a lot of bones next to their bowls and chopsticks, but Hu Mingmei's had very few.
Although he didn't know this older brother yet, he thought the older brother was really handsome and he liked him a lot. So, Bai Yu was especially concerned about whether Hu Mingmei had eaten enough.
If he wasn't full yet, or didn't like his sister's cooking, he would cook for his brother himself, making sure he was full.
But my sister cooks very well, so why doesn't this brother like to eat it? Look, Brother Lu Ying likes to eat it very much. Brother Lu Ying has eaten the most here, more than all of them combined.
“It’s not that I don’t like to eat!” Hu Mingmei suddenly met Bai Yu’s eyes. He paused for a moment, then said calmly, “I’m sick, so I don’t have an appetite.”
"Then I'll cook you some plain porridge?" Bai Yu looked at Hu Mingmei with great concern. "My sister said that drinking plain porridge is the best thing to do when you're sick. It will make you feel better soon."
"Ah Yu..." Bai Nuo finally couldn't help but speak up, seeing Bai Yu's overly enthusiastic manner. What's wrong with this kid? He ate so much last night, can't he shut up? What's wrong with him? It's clearly the first time he's met Hu Mingmei and Lu Ying, why is he being so enthusiastic? What if he gets snatched away by someone else?
Bai Yu turned around with a smile when Bai Nuo called him, but seeing that his sister's expression seemed not very good, he immediately stopped smiling and didn't dare to mention cooking porridge for Hu Mingmei. Seeing that Bai Yu was so obedient, Bai Nuo felt relieved and then turned to Hu Mingmei, "Second Master, are you full?"
Hu Mingmei nodded, took out a handkerchief from her pocket, elegantly wiped her mouth, and said lightly, "The food is delicious!"
"Thank you for the compliment!" Bai Nuo said lightly, thinking to herself that it didn't matter whether it tasted good or not, since you would only be able to eat it this once in a while, as she didn't cook often these days.
"Young master, you're so particular!" Aunt Liu, who was watching from the side, smiled when she saw Hu Mingmei take out a handkerchief to wipe his mouth. She said to the old woman, "Auntie, don't you think so? We country folk just rinse our mouths with water and go to sleep. We don't need to be so particular."
The old woman looked at Hu Mingmei and had a very good impression of him. After hearing what Aunt Liu said, she smiled and said, "That's right." Then she asked Hu Mingmei, "Young man, what's your name? Where are you from?"
Hu Mingmei quickly put down the handkerchief and said gently, "I am from the capital. My name is Hu Mingmei, and I am nineteen years old."
As soon as Hu Mingmei finished speaking, Aunt Liu looked at the old woman and exclaimed, "Oh my, from the capital!" After the old woman and Aunt Liu exchanged a few words of admiration, expressing how much they longed to go to the capital and how regretful they were that they had never been there at their age, the old woman carefully examined Hu Mingmei's face and asked, "Mingmei, you don't look well. Are you feeling unwell?"
Hu Mingmei coughed lightly before saying, "Yes, I just arrived here and am experiencing some discomfort from the change in environment!"
"Oh dear!" The old woman immediately felt sorry for you. "You child, you were doing just fine in the capital, what are you doing here? This place is poor and far away, and it's hot too. No wonder you're having trouble adjusting to the climate. Young people, you need to take better care of your health and exercise more, otherwise you'll become weak and unable to cope when you get old."
"Yes!" Hu Mingmei nodded, looking very receptive. "I understand. I'll start training tomorrow."
"You two chat, I'm going to clear the dishes!" Aunt Liu smiled and stood up from her seat. Bai Nuo called out to her, "Auntie, put the dishes down and let Young Master Hu clear them!"
Upon hearing Bai Nuo's words, everyone looked at her in surprise, especially Aunt Liu, who stood there anxiously. "Miss, let me clear the table. Young Master Hu is sick; it's not good to have him do things." Had she done something wrong? Why wouldn't the young lady let her clear the table?
"Yes, Nuonuo, what's wrong with you?" The old lady looked at Bai Nuo with disapproval. "Putting aside whether Mingmei is feeling unwell, Mingmei is still your friend and our guest. How can we ask our guest to do things?"
Bai Nuo was even more unhappy. Hu Mingmei had only just arrived, so why did everyone seem to like him so much? Bai Yu was even more so; whenever he saw Hu Mingmei, he practically stared at him, seeing him everywhere. Even the old lady was there; she saw her chatting and laughing with this man. You know, the old lady wasn't usually a cheerful person, so why was she helping Hu Mingmei now?
