Chapter 85 Living in his house means you have to pay him rent.

Only a hazy moonlight illuminated the sky, and Hu Mingmei could only see the man stick the lantern in his hand into the ground and then go into the water. The reason she knew the man had gone into the water was because she heard the sound of the water sloshing as he walked. Moreover, it was very quiet at the time, and apart from the chirping of insects and birds, there was only the sound of the water sloshing. Under the quiet night, the sound seemed very loud.

By the light of the lamp and the moonlight, Hu Mingmei could vaguely make out who the person was—Bai Nuo. Hu Mingmei watched Bai Nuo walking around in the water and found it very strange. Why was she here at night instead of sleeping?

When I looked again, I saw Bai Nuo bend down and grope around in the water, then throw the items onto the shore one by one.

Bai Nuo definitely has a secret, that was Hu Mingmei's only thought. But what that secret was, Hu Mingmei didn't know, but she felt it was related to Bai Nuo's behavior tonight.

Hu Mingmei tried very hard to see what Bai Nuo had thrown up, but Hu Mingmei was just a person with no strength, and a patient with no strength at all. He was not a martial arts master who could see in the dark as if it were daytime. Lu Ying was not here, so Hu Mingmei could not see what Bai Nuo had thrown up at all.

Driven by curiosity, Hu Mingmei quietly approached, then crouched down in front of the pile of things, out of the light, and reached out to pick one up, successfully touching a sticky mess.

Hu Mingmei looked at his hand and saw a shadow on it. He knew there was something on his hand, and it felt like dirt. He felt a little uncomfortable and a feeling of nausea rose in his throat. This feeling made him quickly put down what he was holding.

Bai Nuo was completely unaware of this. She continued to throw the clams out of the fishpond one by one. The clams in the fishpond were mostly old ones with many pearls. She used her spare time to collect them from the river and throw them here. With an extra person suddenly in the house, and Bai Dalin possibly observing her in secret, Bai Nuo could only come to touch the clams at this time. She would dig them out, eating the ones that were edible and digging out the pearls from those that had them, and then go back to her room to drill holes.

"Phew!" Bai Nuo was tired from bending over. After straightening up and wiping the sweat with her sleeve, she glanced at the shore and suddenly saw someone holding her clam and looking at it. She was shocked and thought she had been discovered.

Quietly making as little noise as possible, Bai Nuo reached the shore. The man still hadn't noticed her arrival, only staring at his clam. Bai Nuo immediately kicked it, muttering, "Who's there? This thing already has an owner!"

Hu Mingmei never expected Bai Nuo to come up. By the time he realized Bai Nuo had come up, he was already upside down and only then did he realize that he had been discovered.

Hu Mingmei was lying on the ground when he saw Bai Nuo about to kick him again, so he quickly said, "It's me!"

Bai Nuo already knew that this person was Hu Mingmei, but she was wondering why Hu Mingmei would follow her in the middle of the night. When she walked up, she switched her feet to her hands.

Hu Mingmei was stunned for a moment, and after looking at the hand in front of her for a while, she handed her hand to Bai Nuo. As soon as she grasped Bai Nuo's hand, Hu Mingmei felt a strange feeling. Her hand was soft and different from her own.

After Bai Nuo helped Hu Mingmei up, she asked, "Are you hurt anywhere? Why were you following me so late?"

Bai Nuo was wondering how much Hu Mingmei had discovered. If he had seen everything, then she would have no choice but to kill him. After all, Hu Mingmei was so weak and had just recovered from a serious illness. Although he was a man, he might not be able to beat her.

Bai Nuo felt that a man as frail as Hu Mingmei could be knocked down with a single finger.

However, after thinking about it, Bai Nuo felt relieved. She had only brought the clam up; she hadn't dug for pearls. But then Bai Nuo had another problem: Hu Mingmei was here. How was she supposed to dig for pearls?

Before her business empire was fully established, Bai Nuo was determined not to let anyone discover this.

Hu Mingmei shook his head, "He's not injured anywhere!"

Although Bai Nuo's kick was quite heavy, Hu Mingmei managed to withstand it and didn't vomit blood.

"What are you doing following me?" Bai Nuo asked coldly, looking at Hu Mingmei with a cold eye. "You insist on me taking you in, do you have some ulterior motive? Let me tell you, although I am a woman, a man like you who can drown while catching fish and is in poor health, I could kill you with one finger!"

Faced with ridicule, Hu Mingmei did not feel embarrassed. He simply lowered his eyes and explained calmly that in his nineteen years of life, he had encountered countless instances of ridicule, even more severe ones. Hers was nothing.

And what she said was true.

"I just couldn't sleep, and I heard someone open the door, so I followed them out. What are you doing here? And what are these?" Hu Mingmei pointed to the river mussels in front of her.

Under the light, Hu Mingmei could see what the thing in front of her looked like, but she didn't recognize what it was.

Bai Nuo followed Hu Mingmei's gaze and noticed that the clam was covered in mud. She resisted the urge to clean it and said calmly, "You see, this is a pond. I raise fish here. These things can reproduce as long as there is water, and they also eat small fish. I have to come and clean it for a while every day."
