If Zheng Quchi were in her normal state, she would have immediately shut up and tried to cover things up. But this drunken Zheng Sansui was like a newborn calf unafraid of tigers, and she pouted.
“I’m afraid you’ll abuse me, and I can’t beat you… What if, what if I upset you again someday, and you throw me off a cliff like you did last time?”
Her words were like a sharp knife that instantly pierced Yuwen Sheng's chest, causing his gloomy and sickly expression to crumble.
He and she have always avoided talking about the past.
He thought that as long as he disguised himself well enough, as long as he played the role of "Liu Fengmian" well in front of her, she would be able to let go of past grievances and slowly forget everything.
But now, in her drunken state, she has revealed the truth: she has always been afraid of him, afraid of his past madness and bloodthirstiness.
She didn't want to be his wife anymore; she wanted to abandon him...
He suddenly panicked, unsure how to explain to her: "I... I'm really not a good person, but at the time I didn't know... he was you, I didn't recognize you, but I'll change from now on, okay?"
He knew she wasn't listening to anything right now; she was just saying things she wouldn't normally dare to say, and she wasn't thinking straight at all.
Zheng Quchi was indeed about to collapse. She wasn't feeling well, and hearing him keep rambling on, she shook her head and said, "I don't want to listen, I want to sleep..."
"Qu Chi, why do you also despise Yuwen Sheng?" He supported her, letting her lean against his chest as she staggered, listening to her mumble as if in a dream, "Yuwen Sheng, I don't believe it..."
He stood there for a long time like a lost soul, a smile playing on his lips, revealing his red lips and white teeth, a smile so sickly and devoid of feeling: "It's okay, anyway, for the rest of our lives, we'll just stay together like this forever."
At this moment, Zheng Quchi closed her eyes, leaned against him, and, as if dreaming of something, sweetly hummed in agreement.
He was startled, turned his head, and looked on in disbelief.
"You agreed?"
But she didn't react.
Yuwen Sheng said softly, "Don't be afraid of me, and don't think about abandoning me. I won't be foolish enough to just wait in the same place anymore. No matter where you run, I will find you."
Seeing her peacefully smiling face as she slept, he guessed she was having a sweet dream. Feeling a deep unease, he grinned maliciously and shook her awake.
Zheng Quchi opened his eyes groggily, his eyes watery, like a bewildered little deer.
“Quchi, I’m unhappy and I want to eat candy,” he told her.
Zheng Quchi just wanted to sleep, but she had a good temper. Even though she was forcibly woken up, she didn't get angry. She just said, "Candy? I don't have any."
“I have some.” Yuwen Sheng untied the bag of candy she had given him, took one out, and held it to her lips, smiling wickedly: “Open your mouth~”
She blinked, confused: "If you want to eat, why are you telling me to open my mouth?"
Even though he was completely drunk, his logic was still so strong.
As he spoke, his lips moved, and he placed the sweet-smelling candy into her lips, gently holding it in his mouth.
"Because this is punishment, you have to feed me."
He lowered his head, bit the other half of her lips, and slid the candy, which was covered in her scent, into his own mouth.
Zheng Quchi's pupils dilated, and he felt a momentary palpitation.
——
This must be a dream.
"Sheng'er, stay here and wait for your mother. I'll be back to pick you up soon after I've finished my business. Remember to be good and don't run around."
That loving yet false female voice rang in Yuwen Sheng's ears.
He saw a woman dressed in a beautiful red dress smile gently at him before turning and running into the arms of a man in armor.
"Mother, how long is 'soon'?" Little Yuwen Sheng looked up and asked in confusion.
But the woman who called him "Mother" did not answer him; instead, her figure gradually disappeared along with the man in battle armor.
Little Yuwen Sheng remembered to be "well-behaved".
He waited from morning till night, and from night till dawn... Later, he suddenly realized that "soon" did not mean a long time, but rather that he would never come back.
Before he collapsed from hunger and cold, he heard people saying that he had been abandoned.
What is abandonment, and why was he abandoned?
When he got home, his father, with red eyes and a fierce expression, told him that he was an unlucky person.
His mother didn't love him at all.
He doesn't love him either.
But later, the woman called "Mother" died. They said that his mother loved him very much and was willing to be taken away by the enemy general to save him, where she suffered humiliation and died.
But only he knew that no one truly cared about him.
Everyone loathed him, feared him, and abandoned him.
Therefore, he always knew clearly that no one would love him.
He didn't understand what love was. He only knew that what he wanted could only be obtained by himself through robbing, scheming, and using any means necessary.
——
When Zheng Quchi woke up in the morning, he felt like his head was about to explode, with a sharp, throbbing pain.
She rubbed her temples for a long time to relieve the discomfort, until the warm, bright light from outside the window shone on her eyelids, and she finally opened her eyes.
She glanced sideways and, unsurprisingly, saw Yuwen Sheng.
He was still lying beside her bed.
Perhaps it was because she had shared a bed with this "Yuwen Sheng" twice in the main military tent, or perhaps she had gradually become accustomed to the fact that she was Yuwen Sheng's wife, but when she woke up this time and saw him, she did not feel much emotional fluctuation.
Just like every morning when she woke up, she accepted the fact that he would sleep next to her.
