Chapter 15 Roasted Potatoes
In the northern winter, nothing grows, especially after a snowfall, the village becomes even more desolate, with only monotonous gray and white lines.
After noon, a northerly wind suddenly rose, the cold wind cutting like a knife, scraping against the face as if a layer of flesh was being torn off, causing excruciating pain.
The 15-minute journey felt like an eternity to Lin Yuesha.
"Crack..."
A gust of wind swept by, snapping the tree branch in half, which blocked Lin Yuesha's path.
Lin Yuesha wiped away imaginary cold sweat. She hadn't been paying attention; if she had taken just one more step, she would have been hit by a large tree branch.
The tree branches are numerous, dry, and hard; if one were to hit her face, it could potentially disfigure her.
In a fit of anger, Lin Yuesha kicked a tree branch and muttered to herself, "It's so big, it's still somewhat useful. I can drag it home and use it as firewood."
Mother Chen said that if we wanted to grow some vegetable seedlings in the kitchen, the temperature had to be kept up, and the family would inevitably have to keep the fire burning all day long.
With the mountains blocked by heavy snow, it's not easy to go out and collect firewood.
In the spirit of not wasting anything, Lin Yuesha dragged the branch to the ground, intending to take it home with her.
"Little girl, it's cold, come in and warm yourself by the fire."
Lin Yuesha lifted the cotton curtain in her uncle's kitchen, where her aunt, Wang Jinhua, was using an iron hook to scoop out ashes from the stove.
When Wang Jinhua saw Lin Yuesha enter, she immediately went to greet her.
"Aunt, this is what my mother asked me to deliver."
Lin Yuesha handed over the bamboo basket, rubbed her sore arms, and smiled, "This basket is for my grandparents."
My uncle's family has a lot of people, so there were four or five extra eggs in the basket.
"Where did all these eggs come from?"
Wang Jinhua's second daughter, Chen Xiaohua, kept saying she wanted to eat egg pancakes, but they were out of eggs. Wang Jinhua was about to take some brown rice to her neighbor's house to exchange for a few.
A basket containing a dozen or so eggs; if you were to save these at home, it would take at least a month to accumulate them.
“My older brother helped the villagers write Spring Festival couplets, and they were given to him by the villagers.”
Lin Yuesha brought over most of the eggs she had received. She was thinking about how she had been sick and had been eating and drinking at her uncle's house all day. Her uncle and aunt had given her all the good food without her showing any displeasure.
For this reason alone, Lin Yuesha wanted to reciprocate.
As for eggs, hehe, with my stepbrother Xiao Qi, who's a hen that lays eggs, why worry about not having eggs to eat?
Lin Yuesha was busy calculating her plans. Once the road was open in a few days, they would go to town to sell Spring Festival couplets.
"No wonder people say that scholars are precious."
Wang Jinhua sighed and said, "Little girl, dry your shoes by the stove for a while. Your aunt buried some potatoes and will save a big one for you later."
As for the other basket of items, Wang Jinhua planned to deliver it herself.
"Little girl, did you come here following the scent?"
Chen Xiaohua sniffed, guessing that the potatoes in the kitchen were almost cooked, and excitedly entered the room, only to see her little cousin warming herself by the fire.
"That's right, my aunt even prepared chili sauce."
Lin Yuesha swallowed hard. The roasted potatoes had a natural aroma, and when dipped in chili sauce, they were both fragrant and spicy—the taste was truly delicious.
"You little glutton, you know how to time things right."
Chen Xiaohua moved a small stool and sat next to Lin Yuesha at the stove opening, staring at it eagerly.
"Let me make it clear first, I'm not eating and drinking for free. I brought the eggs you wanted most, and they were even earned by my older brother!"
Lin Yuesha proudly puffed out her chest. Although Xiao Qi was a kind old man, it didn't stop him from contributing to the family.
