Chapter 3 I forgive you, your eyes are so beautiful
On the way back to her ward, Chang Xile slowed down her pace.
In addition to the name "Dai Shanyan", are there any other familiar names?
The wards on this floor were all single rooms, and the people in each ward rarely saw each other, so Chang Xile didn't actually know many people. She had no way to verify it, so she sighed and couldn't help but feel that she was overthinking it.
At that moment, the sound of hurried running suddenly echoed down the quiet corridor. However, the footsteps were brisk, neither those of a patient nor an adult. As Chang Xile turned her gaze away from the ward door, she felt a warm little creature dive into her arms.
When she looked down and saw who it was, she asked jokingly with a smile, "Whose little naughty kid is running around?"
The little girl with pigtails jumped into Chang Xile's arms. She tilted her head back, showing her neat front teeth when she smiled, and called out sweetly, "Sister Xile——"
The young girl, Xu Wanjia, lived in the ward across from Chang Hee-lok. She had a high fever a few days ago and was admitted to the hospital for suspected gallstones. Because of her young age, surgery was not an option, so she remained under observation. The girl was very lively and had a fondness for Chang Hee-lok, the beautiful older sister. She had been visiting her to chat from time to time over the past few days.
Chang Xile squatted down, looked her in the eye, and warned her, "Be careful not to run around when you're alone. What if you fall? Mom will be worried."
"Mom's out shopping." Xu Wanjia stuck out her tongue. Seeing Chang Xile's unusually serious expression, she tilted her head in confusion and asked, "But you were running just now, too, sister!"
The sound of Chang Xile's running was too obvious in this quiet floor, which attracted the bored little girl Xu Wanjia to come out.
"Haha..." Chang Xile realized that she was the culprit. At this moment, she was like a child who had been caught doing something bad. She laughed guiltily, scratched her head and promised, "Then I will be more careful in the future and not run around."
"Good sister! Pinky promise!" Xu Wanjia tiptoed and touched Chang Xile's head, imitating the way adults express praise. After the two of them made the pinky promise, she took out a purple paper crane from her pocket and carefully handed it to Chang Xile, "This is for you, big sister, I hope you get well soon."
"Thank you, Jiajia!" After bidding farewell to Xu Wanjia, Chang Xile returned to his ward in a good mood. Sure enough, children are still very cute when they are not naughty!
After she sat down on the bed, her interrupted thoughts came back to her. She was silent for a moment, then sat down at the table, took out a pen and paper, and tried to recall the contents of her dream.
Normally, no matter what dreams Chang Xile had in the past, upon waking, the memory would slowly fade, as if erased, and she would be unable to recall the specific contents of the dream. However, these past few days, her dreams had been so clear that it felt as if she had experienced them herself.
She recalled a few names she had never heard of, and followed them with the time she remembered. Her first few lines were smooth, but after a while her writing became stagnant.
After all, she just glanced at it casually at the time and didn't think that the small booklet contained anything very useful.
Finally, she slowly wrote out the name "Xu Wanjia".
This line of words was at the end of the album, and Chang Xile wasn't sure whether it was "Xu Wanjia" or "Xu Wanhao." However, all the adjacent names in the album were followed by similar dates.
Therefore, Chang Xile still remembered that the time following that name seemed to be in the afternoon.
Shen time, between 15:00 and 17:00.
Chang Xile glanced at the time. It was 4:42 pm.
She felt inexplicably uneasy, and almost instinctively stood up and walked towards the ward where Xu Wanjia was.
From outside, the room sounded unnaturally quiet.
"Jia Jia, can I come in?" Chang Xile knocked on the door, but heard no response. She looked inside through the glass window on the door, and she felt the blood rushing back through her body.
Xu Wanjia had unknowingly moved a stool and climbed onto the windowsill in the hospital room, reaching for a small bird perched on a branch near the window. The branch looked close, but in reality, it was quite a distance from the windowsill. A child's sense of space was still imprecise, and she felt like she was almost there, just a little bit more, just a little bit more... She didn't realize she was almost losing her balance.
This is the fifth floor!
Chang Xile pushed open the door and sprinted towards the window. A gust of wind blew by, and Xu Wanjia, who had been concentrating, swayed and fell toward the window.
Chang Xile stretched out his hand desperately, but he could only grab Xu Wanjia's ankle.
She gasped, her heart pounding. She tried to pull Xu Wanjia up, but she couldn't muster any more strength. A ten-year-old's weight was already quite significant, and the realization of what was happening, coupled with her being upside down, had her brain congested with blood, making it difficult to calm down. She flailed her arms uncontrollably, trying to find a foothold, which caused her body to sway as well, making it even more difficult for Chang Xile to pull her up.
Sweat dripped down Chang Xile's forehead, and he felt his wrists were becoming less and less powerful.
"Jia Jia!" At this time, Xu Wanjia's mother Zhang Junchan finally returned to the ward. She screamed and ran to the window, and followed Chang Xile to pull the frightened Xu Wanjia up.
Chang Xile sat on the ground, her heart still beating violently. She stared blankly at Zhang Junchan who was hugging Xu Wanjia and crying and cursing. She slowly shifted her gaze to the clock on the wall. The second hand moved step by step, pushing the time to 4:44 in the afternoon.
how so……?
She felt cold sweat on her forehead, not knowing whether it was because of Xu Wanjia's survival or because everything that happened today was consistent with her dream.
Why did the people she dreamed of all have accidents at the same time? What about the other names Chang Xile wasn't familiar with? What happened to them now?
"Thank you, thank you so much!" Zhang Junchan expressed her gratitude to Chang Xile with tears in her eyes when she returned to her ward. The mother couldn't imagine what a tragic scene Zhang Junchan would have seen when she stood by the window if Chang Xile hadn't happened to walk into the ward and help Xu Wanjia.
"This is what I should do. But children are active and ignorant, so try not to let them out of your sight." Chang Xile couldn't say any more comforting words. She sat alone on the bed, still in a daze.
Perhaps it was because he was still weak, but also because he had been running around that afternoon and had broken out in cold sweats and had been frightened. Anyway, that evening, Chang Xile had a high fever again, and his condition was much more serious than in the past few days.
She was in a daze and had no strength to ring the bedside bell. She felt that although she was conscious, her body could not move at all, as if it was being pressed down by something heavy.
When she squeezed her eyes shut and opened them again, she found herself standing on the large lawn outside the hospital's inpatient wing. She looked around, unsure of why she was there. It was still drizzling outside, and the sky was still pitch black. It was clearly not the best time for a walk, and no one was around.
No, there is actually one person.
On the path leading to the center of the meadow, a man in a black coat strolled in the rain. He wore a black sunhat that didn't suit him at all, and held a small pamphlet in his hand as he walked towards Chang Xile.
"What's your name?"
Familiar questions, a cold, businesslike tone.
Chang Xile blinked hard, trying to see his features clearly, but the brim of his hat blocked the upper half of his face. She could only see his thin lips moving. The man asked curiously, "Is it you?"
Is that you?
The emotions contained in this sentence are very intriguing.
Could it be that he had seen her somewhere before?
Chang Xile felt a persistent headache.
"Is today's incident related to you?" the man continued to ask, "Why are they still alive?"
His target today was not actually the woman in front of him, but he walked around the entire hospital and could not find the two ghosts listed in the booklet who were supposed to be wandering around here.
"I don't know!" Chang Xile wasn't a timid person, but at that moment she felt an overwhelming sense of threat from this man. She nervously took a step back and accidentally fell to the ground.
Suddenly, heavy rain poured down, the raindrops passing through her body and landing on the grass. She felt herself shiver with cold. Chang Xile looked up at the man, her gaze fixed on his face hidden by the shadow of his hat brim—his icy eyes hidden in that shadow.
"Don't look him in the eye." A gentle voice sounded in her ears, but the man in front of her did not move. He seemed to have not heard the words at all.
Chang Xile no longer tried to see the stranger in front of her. The gentle voice continued to whisper in her ear: "Lower your head, close your eyes, this is all just a nightmare."
Lower your head and close your eyes.
The man in black watched the girl sitting in front of him disappear from his sight again.
"Tsk." He sighed.
"I really don't want to work overtime anymore..."
When Chang Xile regained consciousness, she was already back in her warm bed.
Outside the window, heavy rain fell, its pounding patter evoking the sudden drop in temperature and chill. Chang Xile wasn't stained by a single drop of rain, yet despite her high fever, she shivered. She trembled slightly, her natural tears streaming down her face.
Mom, Dad...
At this moment, she felt something warm brushing against her cheek. She slowly opened her eyes with great effort, only to see a snow-white kitten lying beside her pillow.
The kitten silently licked away the tears hanging from the corners of Chang Xile's eyes.
You stinky little cat, you still remember to come back to see me after stealing something?
Chang Xile's resentment from the day dissipated unconsciously. At this moment, she really needed companionship the most. Not a distant greeting across the phone screen, but the warmth of a body right at her fingertips, letting her know that everything was just a nightmare and she was not alone.
She raised her hand with some difficulty, wanting to touch the kitten's furry head, but because she had no strength, she could only cover its head with her palm weakly.
"Good little cat, I forgive you..." Chang Xile stared at the little cat. Outside, the heavy rain had stopped at some point, revealing a bright full moon. Yes, today was Mid-Autumn Festival. Her parents had video-called her that evening to wish her a happy holiday. It was only the constant rain outside, the lack of a full moon, that had kept her forgetting about it.
In the moonlight, Chang Xile looked into the kitten's blue eyes, and it looked at her without blinking.
"Your eyes are so beautiful..." Chang Xile fell into a deep sleep, leaving only this murmur.
When she woke up again, she was awakened by the voice of the nurse on night rounds.
"Why do you have a fever?" The gentle nurse whispered to herself.
After the nurse finished examining her and put a cooling patch on her head, Chang Xile fell asleep again.
This time, I had a dreamless night.
And beside her pillow, the exquisite purse was properly placed within her reach.
