In the kitchen, Zhou's mother was busy stir-frying the vegetables in the wok, while Zhou's son was cutting bacon on the side, the blade of the knife hitting the chopping board with a steady and powerful rhythm.
Zhou Yanjing walked over and rolled up his sleeves, "Mom, let me help."
Mother Zhou looked up at him, her smile showing some relief, "You're not needed here, so wake Wuwu up and have dinner. Eat before going back to sleep."
Zhou Yanjing nodded, turned and walked towards the room. He gently pushed open the door. In the dim light in the room, Shen Liwu was still sleeping soundly, breathing evenly and long.
He stood beside the bed, stared at her quietly for a moment, then leaned over and gently shook her shoulders.
"Wuwu, wake up, it's time to eat."
Shen Liwu opened his eyes dazedly, his vision was still a little blurry, and what appeared in front of him was Zhou Yanjing's angular face. She blinked and said in a sleepy voice, "What time is it?"
"It's getting late. Mom and Dad have already prepared dinner." Zhou Yanjing spoke softly, smoothing her messy hair with his hand. "Get up and eat something. Go back to sleep when you're full."
Shen Liwu propped himself up and yelled in horror: "What? I slept for a whole day? My parents even prepared the meal?"
She got out of bed in a panic. It was over. She had slept all day on her first day at her parents-in-law's house and still had to be served by her parents-in-law. Shen Liwu got out of bed in a hurry. As soon as her feet touched the ground, she was grabbed by Zhou Yanjing. He held her arm steadily and whispered, "Don't worry, take your time, don't fall."
"How can I not be anxious? I slept all day, and my parents have been busy for so long. I am such a bad daughter-in-law." Shen Liwu looked annoyed, and hurriedly bent down to put on her shoes and tidied her clothes in a hurry, for fear that her parents-in-law would think she was lazy.
Zhou Yanjing looked at her flustered look and couldn't help laughing, "Why are you so nervous? They let you sleep a little longer because they feel sorry for you being tired. Besides, you are their daughter-in-law, not a servant. You don't have to do everything yourself."
"That's what I said, but I can't just do nothing, right?" Shen Liwu frowned, walked quickly to the mirror, combed her hair with one hand, and smoothed out the wrinkles on her clothes.
Zhou Yanjing walked forward, hugged her gently from behind, and rested his chin on her shoulder. "Okay, that's already very decent. Let's go. Don't make them wait anxiously."
Shen Liwu was hugged by him like this, and the tension in her heart eased a little. She took a deep breath and nodded, "Okay, let's go."
The two walked out of the room one after the other. As soon as they stepped into the main room, they smelled a strong aroma of food. The table was already filled with dishes, including fried bacon with garlic sprouts, clear-boiled chicken soup, and braised eggplant.
Zhou's mother was just walking out of the kitchen carrying the last dish. When she saw them coming, she immediately smiled and said, "Are you up? Come and eat. The food is just ready. Eat it while it's hot."
"Mom, I'm sorry, I overslept and kept you busy for so long.
Mother Zhou waved her hand, her wrinkles forming a kind arc, "No, no, you must be exhausted after the journey, you deserve to sleep a little longer. Come and sit down, the food is ready."
Zhou Yu also came out of the kitchen, holding a plate of sliced cucumbers in his hand, and said with a smile: "Yes, young people, health is important. Come, try this cucumber, it was just picked today, it's very fresh."
Shen Liwu felt warm in her heart and her eyes were a little hot. She lowered her head and sat at the table, saying softly, "Thank you, Mom and Dad."
Zhou Yanjing sat next to her and put a piece of chicken in her bowl. "Eat more. This is stewed specially for you by our mother."
