Shu Ying stared intently at her mother, Yang Wan, and froze on the spot.
Just like she remembered, her mother spoke words of complaint, but the concern on her face betrayed her.
Shu Ying's eyes welled up with tears uncontrollably. She had thought that her parents would never want to see their unfilial daughter again.
I never imagined that I would have a family reunion in my dream.
"Mom, Dad..."
Shu Ying spoke, her voice trembling slightly. She took the crispy biscuit with both hands, and tears involuntarily streamed down her face.
She didn't want the atmosphere to be too sad, but once she started talking, she couldn't control herself.
Seeing that Yang Wan's expression was a little off, she quickly put down what she was holding and gently patted Yangyang with one hand.
"Sweetie, take your little brother and sister to play on the swings in front. Grandpa and Grandma have something to say to Mommy, okay?"
Yangyang still has a chubby little face, fair skin, and wears a pair of denim overalls, looking like a freshly cooked little glutinous rice ball.
"Okay, Grandma, don't worry, I will definitely take good care of my younger brother and sister."
Shu Ying shared the pancakes in her arms with the children, and the little ones ate them with great relish.
Watching Yueyue run away, Yang Wan walked over slowly and gently patted her shoulder with one hand.
"Yingying, why do you look unhappy? Is something on your mind? Your parents are always here for you. You can tell us what's wrong."
Even after a child becomes a mother, in the eyes of parents, their child will always seem like a child who will never grow up.
Shu Ying had been pampered and cared for since childhood, and Yang Wan couldn't bear to see her so worried.
Shu Wenyuan, the father, was as kind as ever; it seemed that there was never a problem that couldn't be solved in front of him.
With him around, even the biggest disasters won't bother you.
"Yingying, what happened to you? There's nothing to hide from your parents. Tell us what's wrong, and we'll figure it out together as a family."
Shu Ying's tears fell uncontrollably, her eyes were red, and she carefully held Yang Wan's hand.
The other person didn't disappear; it all felt so real, like a dream.
She choked up, and her eyes welled up with tears.
"Mom and Dad, I'm fine, I just miss you a little."
She had no idea how long it had been since they last met; those two familiar faces were etched deeply into her mind.
A smile appeared in Yang Wan's eyes, and her voice became more teasing.
She pulled Shuying down to sit, gently tucking a stray hair behind her ear with one hand: "You're already such a grown-up, how can you still cry when you miss your parents? Look at your children, if they knew, they would definitely laugh at you. Stop crying."
Shu Ying followed Yang Wan's gaze and saw that, apart from Yueyue and Yangyang, the other three little ones looked very similar to Xie Zhiyan.
Especially the two little girls, whose features are exactly like Xie Zhiyan's.
She was slightly surprised. Why did these children look so much like Yangyang and Yueyue?
Yang Wan pulled her along, her gentle voice drawing her back to reality.
"Why are you always lost in thought? What are you thinking about? You can't even hear your mother talking to you."
Shu Ying snapped out of her daze: "Mom, I'm listening."
Yang Wan looked at Shu Wenyuan and continued muttering to herself.
"These pancakes are something I specially asked your dad to queue up for. Their place has been getting more and more crowded lately, and we have to go early every day to queue up. I heard they're going to limit the quantity recently, one per person. There are so many kids in our family, it's not enough for you all."
The crispy biscuits still tasted the same as before. Shuying broke off a piece and put it in her mouth, feeling much more satisfied.
Shu Wenyuan chimed in, "I'll go and learn when I have time. If you want to eat it, I'll make it. But the food they make really tastes good. It was worth queuing for so long. There were even people trying to cut in line. I didn't get pushed out. People these days are generally quite well-mannered."
The two of them talked about what had happened outside, as if they had never really left.
This feeling gave Shu Ying the illusion that her parents were still alive. She even wanted to stay immersed in this world forever, even if it was just a phantom, she was not afraid.
"Little sister, these grapes can't be eaten yet. Grandma said they won't ripen until after the Mid-Autumn Festival."
In the distance, several children were having a great time. The grapevines in the yard were planted by Shu Wenyuan himself and are now quite large, covering almost half of the yard and becoming the best place to cool off in the summer.
Right now, the grapes have grown a lot, but they're not ripe yet, and the girl with two little pigtails is drooling with envy.
Yangyang has become like an older brother, patiently and gently admonishing the three little ones.
Yang Wan's face showed some signs of aging; there were fine lines at the corners of her eyes, but it didn't seem to affect her overall charm.
"Look at these little guys, just like you when you were a kid. They're already clamoring to eat grapes before they're even ripe, but you just can't stand sour ones."
Shu Wenyuan stood beside them, fanning them with a fan. Shu Ying couldn't bear to disturb such a beautiful scene.
The family didn't know when they would meet again.
She almost greedily wanted to etch the scene into her mind. Yang Wan turned her gaze away from the children and looked at her own daughter with some heartache.
“Yingying, you’ve never been in good health. Now that you have a son and a daughter, these five little ones are enough to keep you busy. Childbirth is really hard. Why don’t you have any more? Your childbirth was so dangerous this time. Your mother-in-law almost beat Zhiyan to death.”
Shu Ying was completely confused.
What five little guys?
Her gaze fell on Yueyue and Yangyang; didn't she only have these two children?
"Mom, what are you saying?"
What do you mean we shouldn't have any more children?
"Yes, pregnancy is already quite difficult. Even though our family is well-off, there's no need for you to suffer like this. Three girls and two boys are a blessing for our family. From now on, you can just do what you want to do. Having too many children will only harm your health."
Shu Wenyuan's eyes were full of worry.
Shu Ying was even more confused.
What are Mom and Dad saying?
"It's already this late, the children should be out of school by now. I need to hurry back and cook. When a child is growing, if they're a minute late eating, they'll starve like a ghost. I'm not going to talk to you anymore."
Just as Shu Ying was wondering what was going on, she heard the sounds of the other women in the courtyard chatting and eating sunflower seeds.
She opened her eyes, still a little dazed. Everything that had just happened was indeed just a dream!
Tears streamed down her face, and Shu Ying huddled under the covers, her heart heavy with sorrow.
"Dad, Mom, I miss you so much—"
