Pear Garden was the courtyard where Chu Wuyang and her family of three lived. It was named after her father, Chu Mingji, who planted pear trees all over the place for his wife, Yang Li.
September in Haicheng is the season for pears to ripen. When I was a child, my mother would take me, Xiao Wuyang, to pick pears whenever they ripened.
Then, with tireless effort, they simmered, roasted, and boiled the pears to make a paste.
When it's taken out in winter,
A spoonful of pear syrup warms both the stomach and the heart...
The garden is now overflowing with harvest, but the scene of the past is nowhere to be seen.
Only the overripe, rotten pears that had fallen to the ground...
Just like a pear that falls quietly because it is too ripe, when a person dies, they leave the tree; the pear symbolizes the departure of a person.
After leaving the restaurant, Lin Yuebai followed Chu Wuyang all the way to the pear orchard.
She finally couldn't help but call out to her.
"Chu Wuyang, last night my grandmother was scalded by the hot soup you spilled. She's still in the hospital. Shouldn't you give her an explanation?"
"Give me an explanation? Give me what explanation?" Chu Wuyang asked back as if she didn't understand.
He didn't look at her, but stared with interest at the pear he had just picked in his hand.
"You accidentally hurt someone, shouldn't you apologize?" Lin Yuebai said somewhat urgently.
Chu Wuyang frowned, turned around and looked at Lin Yuebai: "Accident? Who told you it was an accident? I did it on purpose."
Lin Yuebai was stunned upon hearing this, her face turning pale and then red.
Seeing that she seemed angry, Chu Wuyang's earlier sadness at thinking about her mother instantly vanished.
She even seemed somewhat pleased, and then, her beautiful eyes squinted slightly in the blazing sunlight.
Leng Mei said in a low, melancholic voice, "Isn't the person still alive? If they were, you could invite me to their funeral. I would definitely be there and send the largest—wreath."
When Lin Yuebai heard the last two words she slowly uttered,
He opened his eyes wide in anger.
"Chu Wuyang, when did you become so vicious, cursing a poor old man like this?"
"Are you... are you taking revenge?"
"When your grandmother passed away, the doctor diagnosed it as a relapse of an old illness, so you can't blame others."
Chu Wuyang suddenly stood up, startling Lin Yuebai so much that she stumbled.
"Why did the old illness relapse? Don't you know? My grandmother was about to recover and be discharged from the hospital, but she suddenly suffered cardiac arrest and died the next day."
"The doctor said it was caused by a shock; it was your poor but wicked grandmother who went and said bad things to my grandmother."
"Spreading rumors that I'm the other woman between you and Jingmin, how malicious? You dare to talk to me about maliciousness?"
"Okay, even if my grandmother did something wrong, she has already been punished and can no longer speak, isn't that enough?"
Lin Yuebai became more and more excited as she spoke, and her body involuntarily leaned forward, almost falling over.
Realizing what was happening, he grabbed the pear tree beside him for support.
Chu Wuyang, who was opposite, hadn't moved at all. Seeing that she had steadied herself, he sighed inwardly, feeling a little regretful that she hadn't fallen.
He turned his back to her, no longer looking at her, and then walked to the sink in the corner to wash the pears he had just picked.
She slowly walked back and sat down on a stone bench not far from where Lin Yuebai had been standing. Then she spoke coolly.
"Not enough? How could it be enough? He's just mute, not dead!"
"Go back and tell your grandma that this is just a burn, but I don't know what might happen next time. You'd better go back and remind her."
"As long as I'm in the Jing family, she has to avoid me, otherwise she'll never have a good day."
"Jingmin wouldn't let you do that." Lin Yuebai, who had just regained her composure, was still a little panicked.
The rebuttals also sounded somewhat weak.
"Lin Yuebai, are you out of your mind? Families like ours value face the most. Jing Min is facing his wife and an old maid from his grandmother's side. For the sake of face..."
"Do you think he'll side with you? Or is your relationship so good that he's willing to sacrifice his family's reputation for you?"
"In that case, I have nothing to say."
"But as far as I know, you haven't completely won his heart yet, have you? How could he possibly sacrifice for you?"
"Men always have moments of distraction, but when they're clear-headed, self-interest takes precedence, and they can be quite ruthless."
"Don't say I didn't warn you, guard your heart, or everything you've gained at the cost of your health will be for nothing."
Chu Wuyang showed a slightly regretful expression, took a bite of the pear; it was juicy, but a little sour.
"You are his wife, but is he the one you love in your heart?"
“You’ve had everything since you were little. You already had Yang Jinchu back then, so why did you still provoke Jing Min?”
"Do you enjoy stealing other people's favorites? Or are you getting revenge for almost sleeping with Yang Jinchu back then?" She launched into a series of self-conjectures.
Chu Wuyang listened, and laughed in anger.
The garden was full of pear trees, all lush and green.
Hmph, how fitting for the occasion.
I don't know if it was because of her phrase "my favorite" or because of her last sentence.
It's quite remarkable that Lin Yuebai, with such an obvious mindset, still tries to hide it every day like she's burying her head in the sand.
Now you have the courage to admit it.
"Shut up, how dare you mention Yang Jinchu? He's just a thief hiding in the shadows."
Chu Wuyang suddenly raised his voice and rebuked, his face cold, staring at her with disdain.
Lin Yuebai felt a chill run down her spine when she met her eyes. Growing up as a dependent, she had developed a timid and fearful personality.
She could surrender to anyone who took a tough stance, let alone Chu Wuyang, who had always been one step ahead of her.
She was clearly in the right, but she dared not utter a word.
Chu Wuyang knew immediately from her stunned expression that she was going to feign weakness again; she was clearly a greedy person.
