Zhang Yunxiao stood at the intersection, his gaze fixed on the bustling Feng family mansion ahead. He did not approach it, but seemed to have lost all reaction to his surroundings.
He remained unmoved by Chu Xuanxuan's cries and tugging.
"Oh, so this one's really devoted to love."
Old Mrs. Li's triangular eyes flashed with a shrewd light, and she raised her chicken claw-like hand and waved it in front of Zhang Yunxiao: "Kid, I'll give you an idea, I guarantee it will make them disperse, and then you'll have a chance."
Zhang Yunxiao finally reacted, looking down at Old Lady Li in front of her. Old Lady Li immediately became smug and rubbed her fingers together: "My idea wasn't given for nothing, you have to be sincere."
"You old woman, what business is it of yours? Get out of here!" Chu Xuanxuan said angrily, pushing Old Lady Li away.
Old Mrs. Li was always either arguing with people or getting into physical altercations. She was incredibly skilled at falling down. She slammed down on the curb and wailed at the top of her lungs, "Ouch! Someone's fallen and died! Help! Someone help me!"
Chu Xuanxuan was so frightened that she stepped back: "I didn't use any force at all, you fell down by yourself!"
Grandma Li pounced with practiced ease and grabbed Chu Xuanxuan's trouser leg: "You're the one who pushed me, everyone saw it. You decide whether to pay my medical bills or take me to the hospital!"
Seeing the excitement, passersby and neighbors all gathered around, and even people came out from the Feng family's Western-style house.
Old Mrs. Li had a strong grip, and Chu Xuanxuan couldn't break free. She was on the verge of tears. She had no money on her and didn't want to be extorted, so she pleaded with Zhang Yunxiao, "Brother Yunxiao, please help me."
Zhang Yunxiao seemed to have just come to his senses. He looked at Chu Xuanxuan, opened his mouth as if to say something, but his gaze suddenly froze.
He stared intently at Feng Mingshu, who walked out of the Feng family's courtyard gate, and the man in military uniform beside her.
As darkness fell and the neighbors who had come to offer their congratulations were about to disperse, they happened to hear a commotion at the intersection. It was the familiar shouting of Old Lady Li. Naturally, everyone went together to see what was going on. Feng Mingshu was no exception. He walked to the front of the courtyard gate and glanced at the intersection.
Zhou Jinshan's eyes were now only on his wife, so he naturally followed her lead and arrived at the courtyard gate.
His senses have always been sharp. He raised his eyes and precisely caught Zhang Yunxiao's gaze. Zhou Jinshan narrowed his eyes and was about to walk over.
"Go back, there's nothing to see here." Feng Mingshu said indifferently, then turned and went back to the courtyard.
The chill that had just settled on Zhou Jinshan dissipated instantly, a slight smile appeared on his lips, and he withdrew his gaze, following Feng Mingshu back to the courtyard.
Standing at the intersection, Zhang Yunxiao watched Feng Mingshu and her husband leave together and return together. The last glimmer of hope in his heart shattered. He tried to force a smile, but it looked worse than crying.
"Brother Yunxiao, please help me." Chu Xuanxuan clung to his sleeve, crying and pleading, her face streaked with tears, looking utterly pitiful.
Zhang Yunxiao finally turned his gaze back to Chu Xuanxuan and the old lady Li clinging to her leg below, and continued what he hadn't said before: "Chu Xuanxuan, solve your own problems, don't follow me anymore."
After saying that, he forcibly pulled Chu Xuanxuan's hand away and walked away.
"Brother Yunxiao, don't go!"
Chu Xuanxuan panicked and rushed over while shouting, but her legs were grabbed by Old Lady Li, and she lost her balance and fell to the ground with a thud. The crowd of onlookers were so shocked that they all backed away to avoid being implicated in the scam.
Zhang Yunxiao did not turn around, and walked further and further away through the crowd of onlookers.
Chu Xuanxuan was stunned by the fall. After the initial shock, she felt pain in her chin and touched it, finding her hand covered in blood. But Old Lady Li shouted faster than she could.
"Ouch, I'm going to die from this fall! My leg is broken, my back is broken, I'm not going to live!"
"Mother, please don't die! What will happen to your sons if you die?"
"Grandma, don't die! We'll help you catch them!"
Grandma Li's son, daughter-in-law, grandson, and granddaughter rushed over immediately. Some surrounded Grandma Li and cried, some reached out to grab Chu Xuanxuan, and others were in charge of spreading the word. They all worked together in perfect unison.
Passersby were dumbfounded, while the neighbors didn't find it particularly interesting. But even the unremarkable excitement was still excitement, since everyone was idle during the first month of the lunar year anyway.
But Chu Xuanxuan, who had been captured, was filled with fear. She struggled, cried, and screamed, but no one paid any attention to her until she shouted, "I don't have any money, but my aunt does. Let me go, and I'll find my aunt to give you money!"
None of the Feng family members went to watch the excitement, but they never expected that the excitement would shift and move to their own courtyard gate.
The family was preparing to cook when they heard a commotion at the gate. Yu Jingqiu was about to go and deal with it, but Feng Mingshu volunteered: "Mom, let me go. Like you said before, you can't protect me forever. I have to handle things myself when they happen."
Yu Jingqiu glanced at her son-in-law beside her daughter, smiled and nodded: "Okay, you go and handle it."
Feng Mingshu happily accepted the task and went over.
Chu Xuanxuan, who had been calling out for a long time, saw that only Feng Mingshu came out. But she couldn't care less about that anymore. She broke free from the Li family members and rushed over, shouting, "Cousin, cousin, save me... Ah!"
Feng Mingshu was prepared and naturally wouldn't let Chu Xuanxuan pounce on him, but Chu Xuanxuan couldn't stop in time and fell to the ground again.
Feng Mingshu ignored her and looked at the Li family members who had already barged into the yard: "Whether you want to extort money or do anything else is none of my Feng family's business, but since you have barged into my yard and made a scene without cause, I have no choice but to ask the police to punish you for trespassing."
"What trespassing? Do you think I, Granny Li, am easily intimidated?" Old Lady Li shouted disdainfully. "Who gets punished for visiting someone's home?"
"That's right, if this is punished, who will want to visit each other in the future?" The Li family members shouted in agreement, as if being loud meant they were right.
“I can’t speak for other people’s families, but my family recently lost a few antiques. We’ve already reported them for donation, but we can’t find them now. Do you think I should ask the police to come to your house to look for them?” Feng Mingshu smoothed his cuffs and asked with a smile, looking at Old Lady Li.
Old Mrs. Li's expression changed immediately: "You're talking nonsense! I didn't steal your antiques!"
"Who knows? We'll find out if the police investigate," Feng Mingshu said calmly.
The onlookers immediately chimed in: "Yes, let the police investigate. Search the Li family's house thoroughly, turn it upside down, they're bound to find something!"
The Li family has a penchant for taking advantage of others and a habit of sneaking around. Every household in the neighborhood has had some things stolen from them, but unfortunately, there's no evidence, and the items aren't particularly valuable, so reporting it to the police isn't worthwhile. Plus, Old Mrs. Li is a quarrelsome person, so things always end up being a mess.
Too many muddled accounts are frustrating, and now they've finally got their chance. The neighbors are all clamoring to call the police, creating such a huge commotion that the newly lit streetlights are flickering. The Li family is so frightened that their faces turn pale.
"I'll leave, I'll leave, okay? Who wants to visit your house!"
Old Mrs. Li shouted this at the top of her lungs, then grabbed her family members and fled out the door.
