Chapter 9: Steal the prettiest one

"Okay, everyone is fine."

Seeing the beautifully dressed young women surrounding him, Director Wu was in a good mood. He nodded in response and then asked with a smile, "Is everyone here? Have you taken a headcount?"

The tall, thin-lipped girl quickly replied, "Director Wu, I just counted the number of people, there are sixteen, so everyone should be here."

Director Wu shook his head: "No, there's one missing."

The tall, thin-lipped girl looked a little embarrassed, while the other girls exchanged glances, wondering who the one with the fewest questions was.

Director Wu glanced around and immediately understood: "The prettiest one is missing, but there are still two minutes left before it's time, so there's no rush."

Upon hearing this, Fu Jiarong, tall and thin-lipped, felt a jolt in her heart. She suddenly remembered the country bumpkin she had previously looked down on and driven away. The other man wore a cotton-padded hat that covered most of his face, but the almond-shaped eyes with upturned corners that were visible made her feel a sense of vigilance.

Just then, a somewhat familiar voice came from behind.

"I'm sorry, Director Wu, I'm late and I've kept you waiting."

Fu Jiarong turned around and, sure enough, saw the person who had put her on guard. The other person had also cunningly pulled down their hat, revealing a small, fair face that was several shades lighter than her own. Fu Jiarong bit her lip in resentment.

"It's not late, I just arrived too." Director Wu smiled warmly, stepped forward and shook Feng Mingshu's hand, jokingly saying, "Your hands aren't cold, it seems you're dressed very warmly."

Feng Mingshu, who was so thick he was almost a ball, smiled sheepishly, determined to remain an inconspicuous figure.

"Alright, it's time, let's all go in." Director Wu called out, leading everyone quickly towards the entrance of the auditorium, his hand still holding Feng Mingshu's.

Feng Mingshu was somewhat flattered, but she couldn't break free, so she had no choice but to follow Director Wu's footsteps.

Her unique treatment aroused envy, jealousy, and curiosity among the young women, who speculated about her identity.

It wasn't just the women rushing to enter; there was also a line of upright soldiers. Their steps were steady, their eyes bright, but when they got close to the girls, their gazes became somewhat distracted.

The girls blushed and secretly glanced at the people opposite them.

Only Feng Mingshu kept her head down, trying to minimize her presence. At first glance, all you could see was the top of her jet-black hair, a neat braid, and a section of her snow-white neck that was faintly visible.

Okay, showing that little bit of her neck was her small mistake, but the red scarf was more eye-catching, so she didn't dare wear it.

Zhai Qingping was the tallest among the officers in the group, and he had high standards. He had attended the previous two social dances, but hadn't taken a liking to any of them. This time, he didn't have much hope either, and just came to listen to music and relax.

But when he casually glanced around, he spotted a patch of white amidst the chattering group of women, and was momentarily stunned.

However, he had seen fair-skinned girls before, so Zhai Qingping didn't care much and turned his gaze away. He stepped into the auditorium and slid to a bench in the corner.

Director Wu had been keeping an eye on him since early on, so he wasn't going to let him get away with it. He immediately beckoned, "Comrade Zhai, come here for a moment."

"Director Wu, you're such a busy person, how did you manage to find time to come over?" Seeing that he couldn't avoid it, Zhai Qingping walked over with a smile and exchanged pleasantries.

Director Wu said with a smile, "No matter how busy I am, I still have to care about the marriage problems of you single men in the military. Today I brought a friend's daughter with me, and I'll introduce her to you."

Zhai Qingping didn't take it to heart: "Director Wu, please don't worry about me. I'm not in the mood for that right now..."

The conversation suddenly stopped because Director Wu beckoned over a young woman with a small, delicate face, snow-white skin, bright almond-shaped eyes, cherry-red lips, and rosy cheeks, like a fresh peach with dew on a branch in the early morning.

In a daze, he remembered that this was the girl who had caught his eye with her snow-white neck.

So this is what she looks like.

"What, you don't want to get to know her? Never mind then, I'll introduce Mingshu to someone else." Director Wu smiled teasingly, pulling Feng Mingshu's hand as if to leave.

"Please wait a moment."

Zhai Qingping snapped out of his daze, took a quick step to block their path, his gaze fell on Feng Mingshu's face, and he extended his hand with a smile: "Hello, let me introduce myself, I am Zhai Qingping, from Beijing, and currently studying at Bincheng Maritime College."

The approach of the strange man made Feng Mingshu a little nervous, but she still politely extended her hand: "Hello, my name is Feng Mingshu."

Zhai Qingping smiled and reached for the hand, but before he could close it, the slender white fingers slipped away like a fish.

Director Wu saw through it all and smiled, "Since you two know each other, chat amongst yourselves. I have other things to do, so I'll be leaving now."

"Don't worry, Director Wu, I will take good care of Comrade Feng," Zhai Qingping immediately promised, a relaxed smile on his lips.

"Old Zhou, hurry up, the dance has already started."

At this moment, two more officers arrived at the entrance of the auditorium. One had a dark complexion, and the other was extremely tall. However, the latter had a bandage wrapped around his head and looked slightly impatient.

"Lu Xiangqian, don't you think it's immoral of you to drag a sick person like me to dance?"

"Hey, this isn't my fault. Our political commissar told me to go to the hospital to pick you up. He said you had to come as soon as you could get out of bed, and he also told me to pass on a message to you."

"Go ahead and send it."

"Ahem, listen up." Lu Xiangqian coughed twice, struck a pose, and shouted in a strong voice, "Zhou Jinshan, pretty girls aren't tigers. Don't be a coward, you little brat! Snatch the prettiest one!"

Just then, a piece of music finished playing and a new song hadn't started yet. In that brief moment, Lu Xiangqian's loud voice echoed throughout the entire auditorium.

Everyone in the hall turned to look.
