Chapter 13: Raincoat Man

Chapter 13: Raincoat Man

Several other people also noticed the sound. We exchanged glances and carefully took a detour to the edge of the road, slightly away from the source of the sound.

"Fuck you!"

Someone cursed, and then a muffled sound came from the corner of the street. The low and hoarse whimpering sounded like pain, making bursts of painful moans.

"Hmm--uh--"

A monster covered in festering wounds suddenly flew out from the corner of the street. Immediately afterwards, a man in a raincoat and a gas mask slowly walked out from the end of the street corner. As soon as the monster stood up, the man in the raincoat pulled out a long knife and inserted it into the monster's body. Then, with a light slash, the monster struggled and broke into two halves.

We all gasped in surprise, looking at the person before us. This guy was much bloodier than those mutant monsters.

The man seemed to notice us as well, tilting his head to look at us for a moment, then chuckled and said, "I didn't expect there were still survivors in the wild."

The four of us became alert at the same time, staring closely at the people in front of us. Although the apocalypse had only been a few days and order still existed, the speed of mutation was so fast that no one could react in time. The city suffered heavy casualties. It was really abnormal for someone to dare to wander outside under such circumstances.

What's more, when he faced the mutated monster just now, he was obviously at ease and didn't look like an ordinary survivor at all.

As if he could see what we were thinking, the man chuckled softly.

"Look how nervous you all are. Don't look like you've seen a ghost. I'm just like you. I had no choice but to come out to find some supplies." The man spoke in a lifeless and nonchalant tone.

"Where are you going? Take me with you?" he continued.

I don't believe you, it's abnormal, too abnormal. I was about to refuse, but the man seemed to see through my thoughts and spoke first: "Don't rush to refuse, you just saw it."

As he spoke, he kicked the monster corpse he had split in half and continued, "I am at least a fighting force. Wouldn't it be better for us to survive if we team up? If we encounter an infected person, we can at least escape."

Ha, big brother, you're being modest. Maybe the monster just ran away...

"Hey, buddy, you're not trying to take advantage of me, are you?" Jiang Wang looked at him with some suspicion.

The man just smiled, then clicked his tongue twice and said, "If you wanted to take advantage of the situation, I would have robbed you just now. Do you think you can resist?"

"You!" Jiang Wang narrowed his eyes and took a step forward. Although he was still smiling, it seemed that he was about to hit him in the next second.

"Don't talk about this now. You're already fighting before you're even in danger." I stepped forward to stop Jiang Wang and turned to say to him, "You should at least show some sincerity."

The man shrugged and threw the long knife in his hand to me.

"Here's the knife. It's 1.4 meters long. If I want to run, can you allow me to run 1.3 meters... Oh no, 1.2 meters."

I looked at the knife in my hand. It looked like a Miao Dao. There were simple cloud and thunder patterns on the scabbard, which looked very ancient.

I looked at him doubtfully, and then looked at the other people questioningly.

Jiang Wang's eyes lit up. He took the knife and examined it carefully, saying in amazement, "Brother, this knife is not cheap! But..." Jiang Wang changed the subject, "If it's just a knife, it doesn't seem very sincere."

"I'll give you half of the looted supplies?" The man didn't get angry, but just added the offer lightly.

Jiang Wang glanced at us and gathered us together for a small meeting: "What do you think? Why do I feel like there might be something fishy going on?"

An Xiaowei nodded and said, "It's too risky. What if he's some high-level infected person? We'll all be doomed."

Mo Junfan and I didn't say anything, we were just thinking about this person's purpose.

"How about this, let's agree to him for now and let him stay 200 meters away from us. We will also keep the knife. This way, even if there are any problems, we will have time to react." Jiang Wang suggested.

"Are you really not attracted to his knife?" I questioned Jiang Wang.

"I really like it. If I could beat him, I would just snatch the knife away." Jiang Wang raised his head slightly, his tone very calm.

Shamelessly admitting it...

"I say, I'm so sincere, but you guys are loudly plotting to rob me right in front of me. It really makes me sad." The man accused us in a teasing tone with his hands folded, but there was no sign of anger at all.

"How do you make us believe it?" I asked him.

"This is really troublesome. How about this? Can you search me? Or should I take you to the nearest safe zone? If you suspect I'm infected, you can check it out in the safe zone and find out."

"Where is the safe zone?" Mo Junfan keenly caught the key words.

"There's a place called Ankang Sanatorium in the western suburbs. The government has set up a temporary base there," the man replied.

"As far as I know, that place closed down a long time ago due to poor management." Jiang Wang did not believe this statement.

"It's up to you. I'm leaving now. Give me back the knife." The man took two steps forward, took the knife from Jiang Wang's hand, turned around and left.

"Should we call him?" Jiang Wang tilted his head and asked me.

I shook my head, glanced at his back, and an idea came to my mind.

"We can go to the place he mentioned, but don't follow him. This person is not trustworthy, but the place he mentioned can be basically confirmed as long as we inquire around." I suggested to the other three.

Mo Junfan and Jiang Wang nodded in agreement. An Xiaowei wanted to say something more, but finally nodded in agreement.

After reaching a consensus, we confirmed the direction on our phones and headed towards the sanatorium.

I looked back at the direction the man left. He had already walked far away, in the opposite direction of us. We were heading to the western suburbs, and he was heading... to the east.

I suddenly realized something, and my intuition told me that I should go find the man in the raincoat. I turned to everyone and said, "You guys go to the sanatorium first. I'll... catch up and see."

"Are you crazy? This is very dangerous! There's something wrong with that person." An Xiaowei interrupted me anxiously.

I was speechless. She was right. My actions were tantamount to seeking death, but I cared deeply about that so-called East. The only solution I could think of was to find that man alone. If he was truly dangerous, at least I wouldn't be a burden to my teammates.

Jiang Wang wasn't as talkative as usual. He just looked at me deeply, changing his usual playful expression and asking me seriously, "Are you really going?"

I was a little unsure, but nodded anyway.

Jiang Wang lowered his eyes, then raised his head and resumed his usual tone and expression, saying with a smile, "Let me make it clear first, we won't care about you. Even if you die, we won't go back to save you."

Of course I know and understand their approach, and if it were me, I would probably say the same thing. But I still couldn't help but feel depressed for a while.

"No, you can't go find that person." An Xiaowei spoke again. Unlike before, even if there were disagreements, she would eventually agree with other people's decisions, but this time An Xiaowei's attitude was very firm.

I gave her a grateful look, but still grabbed her hand and whispered, "I'm sorry."

Then I turned around and chased in the direction the man in the raincoat left.
