"To be determined." Gu Chen's eyes were dark, and his tone became slightly cold.
Lin Yuxi understood. She turned her head to look. She hadn't touched the water or the fruit in front of her. Xiao's mother was asking questions, and it seemed that Gu Chen was a little unhappy.
The living room was quiet because Gu Chen was unwilling to talk, and Xiao's mother couldn't find a topic to talk about. She looked at Lin Yuxi next to Gu Chen and suddenly asked, "Little girl, what's your name?"
Lin Yuxi replied casually, and when Xiao's mother heard that she was also from Qinghe Village and didn't have a job, she immediately lost interest.
"Xuejun, are you done?" she urged as she went inside.
Xiao Xuejun put on his clothes and trousers, and even slicked back some wax to his hair before walking out of the room.
"Mom, why are you shouting like that? It's not like I can't hear you." Xiao Xuejun walked to the sofa and leaned closer to Gu Chen. "Brother Chen, is this the woman we met on the train the other day?"
Seeing her son's eagerness to contribute money, Xiao's mother stood up from the sofa and said, "Xuejun, why don't you come with me and move that thing on the balcony?"
"What are you moving?" Xiao Xuejun raised his hand and scratched his head, smiling. "Brother Chen, wait here for me for a moment, I'll be right there."
Xiao's mother called Xiao Xuejun to the balcony and closed the glass door behind her. In that instant, her face fell. Using the curtain to block the view of the balcony, she raised her hand and twisted Xiao Xuejun's ear.
"Did you know that Gu Chen was going to change careers?" Xiao's mother asked bluntly.
Xiao Xuejun frowned, looking puzzled. "I know."
"I know you still bring him home! I didn't say anything when he went to the army, even if he got promoted to a higher rank, that would be good. But now he's about to be demobilized, just like us, and you're still trying to climb the ranks." Xiao's mother pinched his stomach again, exasperated.
Upon hearing this, Xiao Xuejun immediately became angry. "Mom, what do you mean? Chen is my friend. So what if he's changing careers? Does changing careers mean we can't be friends anymore? So you're starting to look down on others just because Gu Chen is changing careers?"
Seeing that Xiao Xuejun was so blunt, Xiao's mother grabbed a clothes hanger and started hitting him, yelling, "Don't you even look? He brought people from his village in too. Didn't you see how fair-skinned and delicate that girl is? She's not from their village at all. You're full of nonsense, not a single word of it is true. Do you think they consider you a friend?"
She had just looked Lin Yuxi very carefully. Apart from her hands being a little red, she didn't have any calluses, and her skin was fair; she didn't have any of the characteristics of a rural woman.
They even claimed to be from Qinghe Village and farm in the countryside; it turns out they were both lying to her.
"Mom, I'll get angry if you keep saying that. Chen is my friend. You don't like them, but you still accept their gifts. I know better than you how to be obliged to someone who gives you something." Xiao Xuejun turned to look at her, his eyes filled with suppressed anger.
After calming down, I opened the door and went inside.
"Brother Chen, let me take you out for a walk." Xiao Xuejun tugged at Gu Chen's clothes. "We'll go to the state-run restaurant for dinner later. It's on me. You've come all this way to come back, so you can't refuse."
Gu Chen sat on the sofa, frowning and remaining silent. The two hadn't been talking much, and although he couldn't hear clearly, judging from their reactions, Xiao's mother was definitely not happy about his visit.
"Let's go." Gu Chen stood up.
Lin Yuxi also stood up and walked beside him.
"Hello comrade, my name is Xiao Xuejun. I apologize for the poor hospitality today. Let me show you around..." Xiao Xuejun put his hands in his pockets, a smile playing on his lips. "That show you did on the train was so cool, your speed was amazing!"
