The train journey takes more than twenty hours.
From Xinluo Town, transfer at Chengzhuang, and then go to Beijing.
The journey from Chengzhuang to Beijing is relatively short, requiring only a few hours of transfer in a hard-seat train.
Lin Yuxi didn't carry a bag at all throughout the entire trip; at most, she might occasionally have a water bottle in her hand.
"Don't take the water bottle anymore, it's hanging on me." Gu Chen felt sorry for her, having traveled for so long, and the train was delayed, two hours later than expected.
Lin Yuxi casually hung the water bottle on his body. In fact, Gu Chen already had a lot of things in his hands. Wang Caixia was worried that the two of them would go hungry on the way, so she cooked a lot of salted duck eggs and pickled vegetables and put them in her pockets. After traveling from the train station to the military base, I had to take a bus, changing buses twice, and the journey took about three hours, before finally arriving at the entrance of the family compound.
After being rocked along the way, Lin Yuxi was starting to feel dizzy and lightheaded.
"Lean on me, we'll get there soon." Gu Chen pulled her arm, carrying three bags in one hand and two water bottles around his neck.
Lin Yuxi shook her head, looking at the guards standing at the gate, she felt too embarrassed to walk close to them.
The family compound has both apartment buildings and small courtyards.
Walking in from the main gate, past several buildings and rows of small trees, you finally reach the back courtyard.
"There's a canteen in the family compound. You don't need to cook lunch; you can get food from the canteen and bring it back to eat, or you can eat in the canteen," Gu Chen explained as they walked.
Besides the cafeteria, there is also a sports field and a barbershop.
“There’s a time every month for family members to do a group shopping trip. The hospital will arrange transportation. Tomorrow I’ll take you out to buy some things first. You can buy the rest yourself if you need them.” Gu Chen led her to the back, where there were mostly small courtyards. Some of the courtyards had awnings with lots of flowers, and some even had chicken coops.
Gu Chen stopped at the entrance of a small courtyard, where a frame was set up.
"We're here. This is our home. Please have a seat while I put my things away."
He had tidied up the house a few days ago, buying everything from toothpaste and toothbrushes to towels and ceramic basins, and even a few sets of pajamas for Lin Yuxi.
“The boss moved out, so this apartment is where I got to live. I know you like peace and quiet, so you didn’t choose an apartment building and took this one.”
The house in the courtyard is only one story, with two bedrooms, a living room, a bathroom, and a kitchen, which is just right for two people. It also has a separate small courtyard.
A grape trellis has been built in the small courtyard, and a rain shelter can be installed outside later. The whole place is kept clean and tidy.
Gu Chen hung all the clothes from the bag in the wardrobe for Lin Yuxi. The wardrobe had three doors. He put his own clothes, socks, and underwear in one compartment, and hung the rest of them for Lin Yuxi.
Lin Yuxi sat on the sofa. The living room wasn't big, but it had a small balcony where clothes could be hung up without getting wet in the rain. There was also a small electric fan, a small table, and three chairs in the living room. The pots and pans in the kitchen were all brand new, and there was also a kettle that showed signs of use.
"I moved all these things from my dorm. The room is all tidied up. Do you want to take a shower and then sleep for a while?" Gu Chen arranged the two pillows. The bungalow offered good privacy because the window only showed the small courtyard.
After sitting on the train for so long, Gu Chen thought for a moment and said, "I'll go boil some water for you."
Lin Yuxi looked around the room and found that most of the daily necessities were already provided.
Opening the wardrobe, her clothes were hung neatly, while his own clothes were all folded into a small compartment, which Lin Yuxi found somewhat amusing.
"I've boiled some water in the kettle, so you can take a shower in a little while. I've also washed all your pajamas, so just pick any set you like."
Gu Chen rolled up his sleeves. He had already washed the bucket in the toilet. A kettle of water would boil in a while. Boiling two kettles of water and adding some cold water would be enough to fill one bucket.
Lin Yuxi casually picked out a set of clothes, all loose-fitting pure cotton pajamas. There was also a bag hanging behind the bathroom door with a few clean towels on it.
The house is fully furnished with almost everything, so there's no need to buy anything separately.
Lin Yuxi quickly washed her hair and took a shower. The weather was hot, so her hair dried in no time.
"You go to sleep for a while, I'm going to take a shower, and I'll get you dinner from the cafeteria tonight." Gu Chen raised his hand and touched the top of her head.
Lin Yuxi lay on the bed, Gu Chen drew the curtains, bent down by the bedside, kissed her forehead, then closed the bedroom door and left the room.
Lin Yuxi didn't know how long she had slept, as Gu Chen hadn't come in. When she opened her eyes, it was already dark outside. Through the crack in the door, she could see the lights were on. She touched her hair, which was completely dry. She opened the door and went out. Gu Chen was wearing an apron and cooking in the kitchen.
"Didn't we say we'd get our food at the cafeteria?" Lin Yuxi leaned against the doorframe, her hair casually falling over her shoulders, and yawned.
