Chapter 139 The Dead Don't Bear Responsibility

"Don't mention that I killed someone later, or your sister will worry. Just say I'm your high school classmate, and I'm studying in the US now." The place where Li Tiezhu and his sister lived was a dilapidated little wooden house that looked like a warehouse, less than 30 square meters. When they arrived at Li Tiezhu's place, Wang Han instructed him again. Li Tiezhu's sister was definitely not as naive and inexperienced as Li Tiezhu; she was a shrewd and capable person.

"Hmm." Li Tiezhu nodded seriously. On the way here, Wang Han had explained the seriousness of the situation to him. If he were caught in the United States, he would really die far from home. Although he was dull, he was not stupid. He just lacked social experience and was inflexible. Otherwise, he would not have finished high school.

"You two are truly tenacious! Not just in will, but in life itself." As Li Tiezhu unlocked the door, pushed it open, and invited Wang Han inside, Wang Han couldn't help but sigh at the room's furnishings. The brother and sister had somehow managed to live like the poor people of the 1950s during the financial crisis in America in 2002, perhaps even earlier.

The room, less than 30 square meters, was converted from a dilapidated warehouse. A single pillar supported the wooden structure, and there were no partitions inside; drafts were covered with discarded planks. The furniture was sparse: two small stools, a table, a broken wardrobe for clothes, and two worn-out beds separated by a curtain. Aside from a light bulb hanging in the center, there were no electrical appliances. In one corner was a small, extinguished stove, some cooking utensils, a rice container, a water bucket, and some stale or decaying vegetable scraps—presumably salvaged. That was all there was. Despite its simplicity and dilapidation, the room was clean and tidy, and the air was fresh.

"Brother, we have a guest." Inside the room, the pale-faced girl lying on the bed quickly asked Wang Han, who had entered the room with Li Tiezhu.

Upon hearing this, Li Tiezhu quickly introduced, "Little sister, his name is Wang Han. He is my high school classmate and is also studying in the United States, majoring in medicine."

"Wang Han, this is my younger sister, Li Sisi."

Upon hearing this, Li Sisi tried her best to stand up and quickly greeted, "You're my brother's classmate, please come in. This place is simple, please don't mind."

'She's incredibly vigilant, and she hasn't shown it.' Feeling Li Sisi's suspicious gaze, Wang Han couldn't help but admire her. 'This is the kind of survival attitude one should have when living alone abroad. Li Tiezhu can't even lie properly; the fact that he's survived in America in this era without being sold out is probably all thanks to his sister.'

"Sisi, you're still injured, so don't get up." Li Tiezhu quickly went over to help his sister lie down again and said, "I'll take care of greeting the guests."

“I’ve been through tough times too, I won’t mind,” Wang Han said, shaking his head. “You should lie down and rest; you need to rest after your injury.”

"Thank you for your understanding," Li Sisi said with a smile, and lay back down.

"How did you get injured? It's quite serious," Wang Han asked after Li Sisi lay down. Based on his experience, Wang Han could tell the extent of Li Sisi's injuries just from her movements and complexion. Not only were there severe external injuries, but internal organs and bones were also damaged. More importantly, the injuries hadn't been treated properly; the initial care and follow-up treatment were inadequate, causing the condition to worsen. She had severe inflammation and fever and wouldn't last much longer. If it dragged on any longer, even with current medical technology, she might not survive, even in America. Clearly, whoever hit her hadn't held back.

Upon hearing Wang Han's words, Li Tiezhu couldn't help but feel like crying again, and decided to tell Wang Han what had happened. "My sister was trying to help me..."

Li Sisi interrupted Li Tiezhu and said, "I fell down by accident while helping my brother move things, but I'm fine."

"Don't worry, I'm not a bad person. I really want to help you because we are all Chinese." Wang Han said, "I know you don't believe me, but your injuries are indeed very serious and inflamed. If this continues, it may take your life soon."

"What? Wang Han? You're saying my sister will die?" Upon hearing this, Li Tiezhu stared at Wang Han with bloodshot eyes. Li Sisi remained silent; she was aware of her own physical condition and knew she was growing weaker and weaker.

“Your injuries are from being beaten. There are not only external wounds, but also multiple contusions, and even some damage to the bones. Although they are not broken, there are probably multiple cracks.” Wang Han said to Li Sisi, “Moreover, because you did not receive effective treatment and care later, it has become infected, inflamed and suppurating.”

"What should we do?" Hearing Wang Han's reasonable explanation and knowing that Li Sisi's injuries were indeed caused by someone beating her, Li Tiezhu panicked completely.

"Let's go to the hospital first..."

"Li Tiezhu, get out of here with your sister." Before Wang Han could finish speaking, a young man's voice came from the doorway. Four or five white youths and a white couple walked into the house. The young man in the lead shouted, "We don't need to pay the rent anymore, get out of here."

Upon seeing the group of young white men and women enter, Li Tiezhu clenched his teeth and fists. If his sister hadn't been holding him back, he probably would have already charged forward.

"Alright, I'll pay their rent." Seeing Li Tiezhu's expression, Wang Han immediately understood that the people in front of him were the ones who had assaulted him.

"Forget the money, consider this five hundred dollars a bonus for your medicine purchase. Get out of here, and you get out too. Chinese people are not welcome here," the man in the white couple said cursingly, throwing five one-hundred-dollar bills at Wang Han.
