Chapter 40 You've been planning this for a long time, haven't you?
Upon hearing this, Shang Shu realized something was amiss. She turned to look out the window and, sure enough, there wasn't a single car in sight.
etc.
When did she agree to let the driver leave?
Does this mean they're tacitly agreeing to stay?
She glanced at the culprit: "When did I say I was going to stay?" Then she deliberately turned cold, "Also, I hired the driver; picking me up was her job."
She couldn't let Gu Sui think she was such a casual person.
She can bring it up herself, or agree to the other person's request, but she can't let the other person take it for granted.
Even if you've lived there before, it's not allowed.
Even if we almost kissed each other today, it's still not allowed.
Given their relationship, there's a world of difference between having feelings for someone and actually staying overnight, unless she agrees.
Seeing that the little girl seemed about to get angry, Gu Sui panicked a bit: "A-Shu, don't be angry. It was my oversight. I'll take you home later, okay?"
She was somewhat annoyed, blaming herself for acting on her own and being too hasty.
He was so well-behaved before he left, how come he... as soon as he came back?
Seeing people act this way, Shang Shu felt a little sorry for them. She had only wanted to clarify some boundaries and scare them a little.
You have to justify what you say.
Her expression softened a bit: "I just told you to adjust to the time difference properly, how could I dare to let you take me?" She gestured with her chin towards Gu Sui, "Besides, you've already changed your clothes."
Seeing that the man's expression had improved, Gu Sui felt a little relieved. Afraid of upsetting him again, she tentatively asked, "Then... will you have the driver come back?"
"You..." Shang Shu was speechless.
This person is quick-witted when flirting, but why can't they see through it now?
She took a deep breath and, unusually, asked such a direct question: "Do you want me to stay or not?"
"Yes." Gu Sui blurted out almost as soon as he heard the question, "A-Shu, of course I want you to stay, but I'm afraid you'll be angry."
She lowered her eyes and continued in a gentle tone, "I know I acted on my own. I should have asked you first. It was my fault..."
She reached out and took the little girl's hand from under the table: "Ah Shu, why don't you stay at the riverside tonight? I'll take you there tomorrow, okay?"
Hearing the other party's words, which were half-coaxing, Shang Shu had long since lost her temper. She nodded gently in agreement.
When Gu Sui saw that the person agreed, the worry on her face disappeared completely: "Then you can sleep in the same room as last time, okay?"
"Okay," Shang Shu replied.
She later discovered that the room she had slept in last time was right next to Gu Sui's. No wonder Gu Sui followed her out for a smoke in the middle of the night; he had heard her.
"I've changed the mattress and pillows," Gu Sui said with a smile. "I also bought you new pajamas, and they've all been washed. Try them on and see if they fit."
Hearing this, Shang Shu felt a sweet warmth in her heart, and the corners of her lips unconsciously curved into a beautiful arc: "I'm sorry to trouble Dr. Gu with his expense."
She is indeed very picky about bedding. She was comfortable last time she stayed there, thanks to the fact that Gu Sui's family always uses high-quality items.
But after a few seconds, Shang Shu realized what was happening and looked at the person with her mouth slightly open: "You...you've been planning this for a long time, haven't you?"
Seeing that the other person didn't seem angry, Gu Sui felt relieved and said, "You can't say that. I'm pursuing you, aren't I? When pursuing someone, you have to be sincere, right?"
What if we need it someday, like today?
Of course, she didn't say those words aloud.
When Shang Shu heard her bring this up again, she said "Oh," and then asked with some curiosity, "Aren't you afraid I'll choose someone else?"
She had originally intended to say that if she had chosen someone else, all of these things would have been wasted.
But then she thought about it, and the yacht that Gu Sui bought for her was still at the Shanghai dock. She didn't even care about the money, so why would she care about this little thing?
"I'm scared, that's why I'm working hard," Gu Sui said with a smile.
Shang Shu turned her head to look at the darkening sky and couldn't help but murmur, "If only you had liked me this much before."
That way we won't get separated.
Gu Sui was taken aback when she heard this, and then unconsciously thought of Shang Shu's question about her living with Gu Qi.
Her eyes darkened, and she slowly said, "Ah Shu, what I said to you on the yacht that day was true. You just need to know that my feelings for you have never changed, and that's enough."
Shang Shu turned around and stared intently into Gu Sui's eyes.
It's so bitter.
Why could she read a bitterness in the other person's eyes...?
Is that enough?
She didn't know.
Perhaps that's true for Gu Sui.
She asked herself, perhaps she should be content, shouldn't she?
But no one could give her an answer.
"Let's go upstairs." Shang Shu finally gave a bitter smile and gently brushed the question aside again.
Gu Suixin's new mattress is just the right firmness and is very comfortable to lie on.
The pillows were also different; some were down, some were latex. Gu Sui even thoughtfully prepared two kinds for her to choose from.
The pajamas fit perfectly, just like Gu Sui's, made of high-quality silk, and in her favorite oatmeal color.
Everything was so agreeable and comfortable, yet she just couldn't fall asleep.
Ever since she agreed to let Gu Suishao smoke at FBO, she was determined to quit. Today, she didn't bring either cigarettes or a lighter with her because she was going to pick someone up.
She did bring the medicine, but she didn't want to take it at all, because she needed a clear mind to think about Gu Sui's words.
Shang Shu suddenly felt a headache.
Now, there are two things she can be sure of:
First, Gu Sui knew exactly what she wanted to ask.
Secondly, her previous assumptions about the reasons for Gu Sui's departure seemed to have been completely overturned.
But if it's not abandonment, then what exactly is Gu Sui running away from?
Unfortunately, the more people want to know something, the more easily they become trapped by it.
Shang Shu kept her eyes open until dawn.
She thought there would be no more noise that night, but then she heard the sound of a door opening next door.
Shang Shu pricked up her ears.
Is Gu Sui also awake?
A few seconds later, her room door was gently pushed open. Shang Shu subconsciously closed her eyes, waiting to see what the person would do next.
She listened as Gu Sui's deliberately soft footsteps approached slowly, then stopped in front of her bed.
She felt Gu Sui move her blanket and cover her up again, revealing half of her arm.
His warm breath lingered on her forehead, and a light kiss landed on her.
Her eyelashes trembled uncontrollably, but fortunately the bright moonlight couldn't penetrate the curtains, allowing her to conceal herself in the darkness of the night.
After a soft sigh, the footsteps faded into the distance, and the room returned to its solitary silence.
Shang Shu didn't open her eyes, but let the tears slide down her cheeks and disappear into the soft pillow.
Gu Sui.
What was it that made you willingly let go of my hand?
What exactly caused us to miss out on so many years?
*
Early in the morning, Shang Shu was woken up by the alarm clock she had set the night before.
Calculating the time, she should have only slept for less than three hours. The reason she needed to calculate was because, based on her feelings, she felt that this sleep was almost equivalent to not sleeping at all.
She's the one who tosses and turns at night, and she's the one who can't bear to leave this bed and warm blankets.
She had to force herself to get up as soon as possible because she still had work to do.
When she opened the door, she found Gu Sui already standing there waiting for her.
"Good morning." She smiled faintly at the person.
"Did you sleep well?" Gu Sui asked as they walked.
"Hmm," Shang Shu replied vaguely.
Gu Sui walked ahead, glancing at the person slightly, and asked disbelievingly, "Are you not used to the food?"
"Huh?" Shang Shu thought the topic was over and didn't react for a moment. "No, both are suitable. It's just that I'm not a big fan of certain beds."
Gu Sui remained noncommittal, and the two sat down at the dining table.
"And you, what time did you go to sleep last night?" Shang Shu asked, almost as if it were a premonition.
Gu Sui picked up the flower tea beside him and took a sip: "It's past twelve o'clock, what's wrong?"
Yeah?
"It's nothing, just asking." Shang Shu pursed her lips and glanced at the person with her eyes slightly raised.
That evens things out.
A message popped up on her phone. Shang Shu glanced at it and saw it was a voice message from Ji Songning.
She tried to click the "Convert to Text" button next to the voice message bar, but accidentally clicked the voice message instead. The speaker volume was just right, not too loud, enough for the two of them to hear the sweet voice: "Senior~"
Shang Shu was extremely embarrassed and hurriedly tapped the voice message bar again to stop the playback.
"Sorry," she apologized for playing it on speakerphone.
Gu Sui raised an eyebrow: "Senior?"
Shang Shu thought this person would pretend not to hear, but unexpectedly asked directly instead. She tugged at the corner of her mouth: "The curatorial team member this time is my junior from high school."
"Why don't you continue?" Gu Sui slowly picked up a piece of fruit, his expression indifferent.
"Oh." Shang Shu dusted her hands off, and after making sure everything was perfect, she clicked on the "Convert to Text" option.
Ji Songning didn't actually send much, just a message: "Senior, I've arrived. Don't rush, take your time. Let me know when you're almost there, and I'll meet you at the gate."
Shang Shu quickly replied "okay," then tossed her phone aside and focused on eating her breakfast.
After breakfast, Gu Sui escorted the person to the entrance of the museum.
From afar, she saw a girl with a high ponytail, wearing a thin business suit, standing at the gate waiting for someone. When she saw Shang Shu get out of the car, her eyes lit up and she smiled like a flower.
She frowned as she sat in the driver's seat, about to get out of the car, when she noticed that Shang Shu got out even faster, leaving her phone on the seat.
Hearing the dull thud of the door closing, she picked up her phone, got out of the car, and walked around to the other side, where she heard the little girl talking to someone in a friendly manner.
"Sonia, why are you dressed so scantily clad while waiting?"
"It's okay, senior, I'm not cold."
"..."
Gu Sui pursed his lips, recalling the "senior sister" he had called her at breakfast, and the messages Shang Shu had been sending in the car earlier. It seemed that this was the girl's "junior sister".
She was never one to get jealous easily, but looking at the girl in front of her, she chose to trust her intuition.
"Ah Shu, the phone." She walked to Shang Shu's side and handed her the phone.
"Ah, thank you." Shang Shu took the phone and thanked him subconsciously.
Gu Sui frowned slightly upon hearing the awkward thank you.
"Senior, shall we go in?" Ji Songning smiled, affectionately linked arms with Shang Shu, and pulled her a few steps forward, while also glancing at Gu Sui.
As a faint scent of unfamiliar perfume wafted into his nostrils, Gu Sui keenly caught that look in his eyes.
She became even more certain that something had indeed made a sound, a two-way sound.
"Wait for me." Shang Shu subtly brushed away the hand that Ji Songning was holding, then turned back to Gu Sui.
She glanced at Gu Sui's rather unpleasant expression: "Then I'll leave?"
"Okay, go ahead." Gu Sui's words were obviously not meant for her. Seeing that she had taken the initiative to say goodbye, his expression softened slightly. "I'll pick you up later."
Shang Shu didn't want anyone to go through all that trouble, but then she remembered the invitation to meet Liang Wanzhi tomorrow. She shook her head and said, "Go back and get some rest. Lan and the driver will be here this afternoon. Can you wait for me at the waterfront?"
Hearing that Song Lan would also be coming, Gu Sui felt half relieved. Listening to the girl's soft voice, she smiled and said, "Okay."
