Chapter 24 Making a Cake

Lei Ting arrived at the pastry shop at the entrance of the courtyard, composed himself, and went inside.

Xiao Jiang: "It's you! Sir, we have some newly made pudding by Master Jenny today, please have a taste."

Thunder: "Here's a tip. I'm here to apply for a job. I want to learn how to make cakes. Anning sent me here to learn how to make cakes with Jenny."

Xiao Jiang: "Miss Anning sent you. Okay, I'll arrange for you to work in the kitchen right away."

Thunder: "Um, thank you..."

Xiao Jiang: "We're colleagues, you don't need to be so polite with me. Thank you for the tip. I'll get you your uniform, it's all the same, with a hat and apron."

Thunder: "Does Anning usually come here?"

Xiao Jiang: "Yes, Master Jenny always invites Miss Anning over when he makes a new product. She comes often."

Thunder: "That's good..."

Xiao Jiang: "I'll go tell Master Jenny that his two apprentices are busy dating, so your presence will be helpful."

Thunder: "Hmm..."

Xiao Jiang ran to the kitchen, where Lei Ting changed into his work clothes—all white, and he looked so clean afterward. Jenny, upon learning that An Ning had sent Lei Ting to learn cake making, nodded and agreed to let Xiao Jiang bring him in. Xiao Jiang even gave him a brief introduction as he entered.

Xiao Jiang: "This is our pastry chef, Master Jenny. My name is Xiao Jiang, and I'm in charge of the initial sales. The subsequent dessert supplies will be delivered by manufacturers. The custom-made cakes and high-end pastries will need to be prepared by the two of you. What's your name…?"

Thunder: "Just call me Little Thunder, I understand, thank you..."

Xiao Jiang: "Master Jenny, this is Xiao Lei, whom Ms. Anning arranged to bake the cake with you."

Master Jenny: "Come with me!"

Thunder: "Master Jenny, please give me your guidance."

Jenny led Thunder to the kitchen, where Thunder looked around carefully. There was a photo of Anning and Jenny shaking hands on the wall. Jenny then led Thunder to a large oven, and Thunder didn't know what it meant.

Thunder: "What are you doing?"

Jenny: "Clean it up, clean all the tools."

Thunder: "I'm here to learn how to bake bread, not to do odd jobs."

Master Jenny: "A person who doesn't even know how to take care of their tools can't bake bread well. Wipe them clean."

Thunder: "I... fine... for the sake of peace, I'll endure it..."

Thunder rolled up his sleeves and carefully washed the oven and baking tray, then put them in the sterilizer to disinfect them. Master Jenny nodded in satisfaction, took out flour, butter, and eggs, and then instructed Thunder to start doing something new.

Jenny: "Xiao Lei, come and crack the eggs. Separate the egg whites and yolks. Quickly."

Thunder: "What do we do?!"

Jenny: "Idiot, there's a separator here, just smash them one by one, quick..."

Lei Ting: "I...I'm such an idiot. I, the eldest son of the Lei family...for the sake of peace, I'll endure it."

Thunder was clumsy and couldn't even separate the egg whites from the yolks properly. Jenny saw his clumsiness and stepped forward to help. With Jenny's guidance, Thunder became much more skilled. After cracking so many eggs, Thunder could finally relax a bit.

Jenny: "Not bad, not bad. Now whip these egg whites into foam."

Thunder: "What? I type it by hand? There's an egg beater!"

Jenny: "Why are you questioning me... A cake made with heart is different from one made with an egg beater."

Thunder: "How long will it take to hit him..."

Jenny: "With your strength, it should take about forty minutes."

Thunder: "What? Forty minutes..."

Jenny: "Yes or no?"

Thunder: "Yes, yes, Anning, Anning..."

Thunder took the mixer and beat the egg whites clockwise again and again until they turned into creamy batter that could form an inverted triangle. Only then did Jenny nod in satisfaction. He then poured the batter into a mold and put it in the oven.

The half-day spent in the dessert room was the most tiring time of Lei Ting's life. Fortunately, with Jenny's careful guidance, Lei Ting made rapid progress. When the real cake base was put into the oven, Lei Ting breathed a sigh of relief. Jenny took out his phone to record the time. Jenny's phone screen saver was actually An Ning. When Lei Ting saw it, he was instantly jealous and pointed at the phone to question her.

Lei Ting: "Why is your phone number An Ning? You..."

Jenny: "What do you know? This is called faith..."

Thunder: "Peace of Faith?"

Jenny: "Of course, he is my teacher and my mentor in life."

Thunder sized up Jenny, a burly, bearded man who actually believed in peace as a faith.

Thunder: "Why do you believe in her? Don't you believe in God?"

Jenny: "She is second only to God to me."

Lei Ting: "Tell me about you and An Ning. How did you come to believe in her?"

Jenny: "Anning is an angel sent by God to mankind; her kindness touches us."

Thunder: "You guys? You're a whole group!"

Jenny: "In this city, those who make good cakes all believe in peace."

Thunder: "Is this some kind of exaggeration?"

Jenny: "You don't understand. Back then, I was just an ordinary cook at New York University, making disgusting tomato soup every day. My life was terrible. That day, it was raining, and I got soaked. I was fat and clumsy when I ran, and I tripped and fell on the grass. My mood was as cold as the rain. It was Anning. Anning was like an angel. She helped me up, gave me a piece of bread, and gave me her umbrella. I will never forget that day. That day, she was carrying a basket of eggs. She had two braids, and when she smiled, the rain behind her formed a rainbow."

Lei Ting: "It was that day... that day An Ning also gave me a piece of bread to eat. And then, how did you come to believe in her?"
