After passing through the village, they followed the road at the village entrance, and soon they reached the mountains. There were small paths on the mountains, and the two walked for about ten minutes before they saw a forest.
But Qin Nan looked up at the bare tree trunk, somewhat puzzled.
As soon as he looked down, Luo Lin had already taken a thick wooden stick and was whipping the branches, while also calling Qin Nan to join in.
Luo Lin: "Quick, Anan, help me pick more. The chestnuts are just right now, and nobody in the village wants them. Pick as many as you can and send them all to Wan Niang. There are also other betrothal gifts, so it can only be more, not less!"
Qin Nan rubbed his eyes hard, but he really didn't see the chestnuts that Luo Lin had mentioned, and he was a little heartbroken.
How could he go blind at such a young age?
After Luo Lin finished picking chestnuts, he noticed Qin Nan standing there in a daze. So he threw aside the rough wooden branch he was holding, grabbed the cloth bag he had brought, and quickly bent down to pick it up.
Luo Lin: "Sigh, Anan, don't think about it anymore. Look, you're injured, and that heartless man abandoned you and ran away, didn't he? I know you might not be happy if I tell you about my good news right now, but I'm more afraid that you might do something rash. Do something to distract yourself, and after I get married, I'll help you find someone better."
Qin Nan looked at Luo Lin with a blank expression; he seemed to have some difficulty understanding human speech.
Is he injured?
A heartless person?
Was he abandoned?
Is he having a mental breakdown?
Qin Nan raised his hand in disbelief and gently rubbed his head. He felt as if he had Alzheimer's. He had no recollection of what Luo Lin had said. His mind was blank, and he couldn't remember anything except his own name.
He was thinking when he suddenly paused, wondering why he had called out a strange name to Ahe as soon as he woke up.
Or perhaps... that name belongs to the heartless man who ran away?
Qin Nan's expression was somewhat complicated. He felt that something was wrong with this matter because he felt extremely disgusted from the bottom of his heart whenever he wanted to agree with it. There must be some misunderstanding here!
But was he really abandoned by the unfaithful man?
Before Qin Nan could say anything, a heavy bag was stuffed into her arms.
Qin Nan subconsciously looked down and saw that the once empty cloth bag was now extremely bulging. The bag felt real to the touch, so he couldn't help but squeeze it and shake it.
There really were chestnuts!!
Qin Nan stared wide-eyed at the bag. He swore he really didn't see anything; it was just a wisp of air!
But the feel of it in my hands and the shape of my arm told me that the bag really was full of chestnuts.
While Qin Nan was still in a daze, Luo Lin picked up another bag and pulled Qin Nan down the mountain.
With a sense of existential doubt, Qin Nan followed Luo Lin down the mountain.
When he reached the village entrance, he felt his thoughts return, but the next moment he was stunned again.
"Zhenghe, you went up the mountain to pick chestnuts! You picked a lot, congratulations in advance!"
"Wow, so many chestnuts! You two brothers are quick on your feet!"
...
Along the way, everyone in the village saw chestnuts, except for Qin Nan, who belatedly realized a question: should chestnuts really be available at this time?
While thinking about this problem, he had a new one.
What year and month is it now?
Qin Nan felt that something was wrong with everything around him, but he felt as if he were standing in a thick fog that he couldn't see anything, feeling lost and helpless.
The two returned home. Qin Nan placed a bag of empty chestnuts on the table, and Luo Lin also placed one on top. Then he took out several bags from the side shed, which were the same cloth bags as the chestnuts.
Luo Lin placed the bag on the table. Qin Nan sat down and curiously reached out to open the bag to look inside. The next moment, she silently closed the bag and withdrew.
Luo Lin: "Hey, Anan, do you want some? I prepared extra, just in case it's not enough. Speaking of which, you didn't eat well yesterday. You ate a little this morning, but not much. Red dates are good for replenishing blood, and lotus seeds and longan are also good to eat."
As he spoke, Luo Lin took a small handful from each bag and piled them in front of Qin Nan.
Qin Nan remained silent.
You read that right, those wriggling things in the red dates are worms, aren't they? And those things growing on the peanuts are mold, aren't they? And that longan, it's bumpy, dark, and covered in a layer of white fuzz.
Is this even edible?!
Luo Lin didn't notice Qin Nan's movements. He tied up the other bags and took some things from the storeroom, such as a rotten and shriveled chicken, a broken wooden box, and a broken bronze mirror.
Qin Nan's gaze gradually glazed over as she watched Luo Lin hold those things as if they were precious treasures.
Then someone came from outside the back door, pushing a wheelbarrow. The person was a young man in his twenties. For some reason, Qin Nan felt for a moment that he had seen this person before, but he couldn't remember anything. And that strange feeling was gone in an instant.
Luo Lin: "Brother Chen Bao, you've come at the right time. I've prepared everything, and I can deliver it as soon as it's packed up."
Chen Bao: "You're pretty good, kid. You've prepared everything quite well. These two chickens are really plump, and the jewelry box is brand new. Is this enough to wish you a son soon?"
Luo Lin: "That's definitely enough, there's so much. Brother, help me load it onto the truck first, I'll find a bundle of hemp rope."
Chen Bao: "Go ahead, go ahead, Anan is here too, let's load the car for you first."
Suddenly called out, Qin Nan snapped out of his daze. He was still wondering how this man named Chen Bao could use the word "fat" to describe two rotten, shriveled, dead chickens that were nothing but skin and bones.
Chen Bao looked at Qin Nan, who seemed somewhat dazed, and patted him on the shoulder.
Chen Bao: "There are plenty of fish in the sea, why hang yourself on one tree? After Zhenghe's marriage is over, I'll find you a matchmaker. She'll definitely be better than that heartless man!"
Qin Nan nodded with a stiff smile.
Why does it seem like everyone knows he was heartbroken? And what's with that heartless man?
