Chapter 97: The Runaway Pen Fairy

"This dormitory is a little different from the previous ones." Zhu Jianing stood at the door of the dormitory, looking ready to run back at any time: "It feels a bit like an escape room. The clue to the exit is probably hidden here, right?"

“I don’t know. This is the first time I’ve seen a haunted house with such a high degree of freedom. The owner is really generous and is not afraid of anything happening to the tourists.” Fei Youliang walked to the chair and picked up the pieces of white paper. On each of them were written: When will I die? How will I die? Who will be the next to die?

“This scene looks a bit like the Pen Fairy game, but…” Fei Youliang looked at the ballpoint pen wrapped with transparent tape on the chair and said, “Isn’t this pen too weird?”

"Is there any mechanism?" Zhu Jianing also came over, took the ballpoint pen in his hand, pressed it hard a few times, and almost broke the pen: "It seems to be a very ordinary pen."

"Do you remember what the haunted house owner said before he came in?"

"The haunted house contains four small scenes, and you must experience them all to get clues about the exit."

"That's right. The clues to the exit are hidden in four small scenes. Let's look for them carefully. Based on my experience, there should be keys and notes in this dormitory."

The dormitory was not big, and the two of them searched every corner but found no clues.

“This haunted house is a bit difficult, and the design is very clever.” Fei Youliang spread the white paper in his hand on the table. There were words written on three pieces of paper, and only one was blank. “Do I have to experience the Pen Fairy game once to know the answer?”

"It's not a good idea to play the Ouija board game in a haunted house." Zhu Jianing looked at the questions on the white paper and felt a little nervous.

“Of the four small scenes in the haunted house, this one looks relatively simple. If you don’t use it as a breakthrough, are you going to go back to that classroom to look for clues?” Fei Youliang waved his hand impatiently. “Besides, do you really think there are pen spirits in this world? Come here quickly, give it a try, and leave if it doesn’t work.”

He didn't know what went wrong, he just felt uncomfortable. The negative emotions that had been suppressed in his heart were aroused, and he had the urge to destroy everything.

Zhu Jianing reluctantly walked to the opposite side of Fei Youliang, and the two of them stood on either side of the chair, one on the left and one on the right.

“But I don’t know how the game works.”

“Don’t worry. I’ve seen a lot of movies about pen spirits. I’ve tried it at home a few times a long time ago. They’re all scams. This game can be explained by science.” Fei Youliang held the pen vertically and hovered it over the only blank piece of paper. “Put your fingers between my fingers, hold the pen, and then don’t worry about anything else.”

"Okay." Zhu Jianing trusted Fei Youliang very much. He squatted beside the chair and held the ballpoint pen in the middle. "What should we do next?"

“Just keep quiet.” Fei Youliang wrote the words “yes” and “no” on a piece of white paper. When there was no more noise in the girls’ dormitory, he said softly, “Pen Fairy, Pen Fairy, you are my past life and I am your present life. If you want to come, just draw a circle on the paper.”

As soon as he finished speaking, the half-open door of the dormitory was suddenly blown by a gust of wind.

The shabby door slowly opened, revealing a dead silent corridor outside.

Zhu Jianing shuddered and shrank back into the house.

“Don’t move.” Fei Youliang stared at the tip of the pen, his body as still as a stone statue.

A chilly wind lingered in the dormitory, and the waste paper on the ground scratched my calves, as if someone had scratched them lightly with fingernails. The temperature dropped, and the chill spread upward along my ankles.

Maintaining the same action and being in a highly tense state, people's senses become more sensitive, which is undoubtedly a torture for the two people who are playing the Pen Fairy game.

The shabby girls' dormitory seemed to have become a little darker. The stained sheets were touched by something, and it looked like someone was crawling out from under the bed.

About ten seconds later, the arms of the two people hovering in the air began to tremble slightly, and the pen tips left a series of unconnected dots on the white paper.

"The Pen Fairy shouldn't be coming, right?" Zhu Jianing asked after enduring for a long time. He really couldn't stand this depressing atmosphere.

"Many movies say that it takes ten minutes to summon the spirit of the pen. If there is no response within ten minutes, it means failure. However, this thing is originally made up by people. Many times, the reason why players think that the spirit of the pen appears is actually a psychological effect." Fei Youliang gestured for him to wait patiently: "This place is one of the four scenes mentioned by the owner of the haunted house. Let's do it according to his requirements and see what new tricks he can play."

As soon as he finished speaking, the ballpoint pen in his hand shook slightly, and both of them noticed it.

"You moved it?"

They said in unison, looking at each other, and saw a hint of surprise on each other's faces.

"It's not me." Zhu Jianing quickly denied. He hadn't gotten over the fear brought by those eyes when he encountered this again. He looked nervous: "Youliang, don't you think it's really the Pen Fairy who came?"

“It’s impossible. The Pen Fairy game only uses the environment and the way the game is played to bring psychological hints. The game time is deliberately arranged to be very long. When the arm is suspended in the air, it will shake involuntarily due to breathing and pulse, so this situation will occur.” Fei Youliang seemed to be trying to convince himself, and added: “People subconsciously imagine that the pen is moving by itself, and the subconscious will affect subjective judgment.”

Just as he finished speaking, the pen in his hand moved again, this time very obviously.

The two looked at each other and then at the white paper at the same time. The scattered dots on the paper were connected by a line, forming an irregular circle.

“Shit! It seems to be really coming!” Zhu Jianing wanted to pull his hand back, but was caught by Fei Youliang at the critical moment.

"Whether it's a real pen fairy or not, we have to keep playing."

"Why?"

"If it is a real pen fairy, if you end the game without sending it away, it will haunt you and you will die. If it is a fake pen fairy, we don't have to be afraid at all, everything is just a game link arranged by the owner of the haunted house."

"So what do you think we should do next?"

“Ask questions, and then send the Pen Fairy away.” Fei Youliang was able to remain calm.

"What are you asking? The questions on those other pieces of white paper?" Zhu Jianing pointed to the other pieces of white paper nearby.

"This is a trap. When playing the Pen Fairy game, you must not ask about anything related to death. We can just ask some irrelevant questions."

"Irrelevant question?"

"Just let me do it." Fei Youliang held onto Zhu Jianing's hand and held it tightly. After a pause, he motioned for Zhu Jianing to keep quiet and whispered, "Pen Fairy, Pen Fairy, can you tell me what my future wife's name is?"

It was just a casual question, but what Fei Youliang didn't expect was that after he asked this question, the gloomy wind in the girls' dormitory suddenly stopped, and an extremely oppressive aura emanated from behind him.

The pens in their hands trembled more and more violently, and soon they wrote three words on the white paper.

“Go to hell!”
