The two walked hand in hand, and before they knew it, a light snow began to fall.
Qin Xi reached out and caught a snowflake, exclaiming in delight, "Lu Huai! It's snowing!"
"Yes, it's snowing." Lu Huai looked up at the sky and saw nothing but scattered white specks.
"The wind and rain send spring away, and the flying snow welcomes spring." Qin Qi recited two lines of a poem he had read before, and then exclaimed, "It's finally snowing, it's so beautiful."
Strangely enough, Lu Huai hated nothing more than reading and reciting poetry; he couldn't remember many poems he had read. However, listening to Qin Qi recite these two lines, although he couldn't recall the content, he vaguely remembered the last line: 'When the mountain flowers are in full bloom, she smiles among them.'
Looking at the person beside him, Lu Huai's lips curled up: "Hmm, good-looking."
He pulled the bright red fox fur coat around Qin Qi's neck, then patted her head: "Don't catch a cold, or else..."
Qin Qi, ever the clever one, went along with him, saying, "Otherwise, you'll get scolded by my dad again."
Lu Huai, caught off guard, chuckled instead of getting angry. He reached out and tapped her forehead, his deep pupils reflecting her image: "How did you know I would say that?"
Qin Xi walked to the front, then turned around and backed away while saying to him, "Because you always say that."
Lu Huai lowered his head and smiled.
When he looked up again, he saw a raised area behind her. He was holding a lantern in his hand, so he quickly chased after her and took her hand: "Watch your step, don't fall and hurt yourself and make your father worry."
Qin Xi looked back and realized with surprise that she had almost stepped on it.
She knew she was in the wrong, so she just pursed her lips and didn't say anything.
Following the path, Lu Huai bought two calligraphy brushes, then led her to the riverbank, where he took out a tinderbox and lit a Kongming lantern for her.
The river lanterns and Kongming lanterns in Shangjing are made of water-writing paper. With just a little water, they can write characters as clearly as ink.
He held the lantern in his hands and let Qin Qi write her wish on the Kongming lantern.
"Aren't you going to write it?" Qin Xi asked.
Lu Huai's eyes flickered in the lamplight as he said, "You write it for me."
Qin Xi: "What do you want to write?"
He gazed intently at the woman before him, his thin lips parted slightly, and he slowly uttered a few words: "The lamplight flickers, and a beautiful woman stands beside me."
Qin Xi was stunned, and the object in her chest began to pound uncontrollably.
She lowered her eyes, dipped her pen in the river water, and wrote down his words very neatly, but her fingertips trembled slightly.
"Alright," she said, releasing the Kongming lantern and letting him put down the one he was holding.
Lu Huai originally wanted to wait for her to release it together, but he couldn't let go of the Kongming lantern, so he had to release it first and then have Qin Xi write another one.
As the Kongming lantern slowly rose, Lu Huai took another one, lit it, and, following the same pattern as before, Qin Xi finished writing and released it.
"What did you write?" Lu Huai asked.
Qin Xi clasped her hands together, looked at the Kongming lantern, and pouted: "Wishes won't come true if you say them out loud."
Lu Huai chuckled softly and didn't ask her any more questions.
Many river lanterns floated on the river, some of which had flowed down from upstream, presumably released by someone before they arrived.
Before they knew it, snowflakes had fallen heavily on their heads. Lu Huai, with a hint of seriousness in his eyes, joked, "Does this count as growing old together?"
Qin Xi's cheeks flushed instantly, but thankfully it wasn't noticeable in the lamplight. She rolled her eyes at him: "You're talking nonsense again."
The expression in Lu Huai's eyes vanished in an instant, like the tide receding. He smiled slightly but remained silent.
"Bang--"
The sudden loud noise startled Qin Qi so much that she instinctively covered her ears, but unexpectedly, a pair of warm, large hands covered the back of her hands.
