Chapter 7 "Immortal Lord, are you afraid of ghosts and monsters...?"
This person seems to be morally blackmailing her.
“But you don’t know, I’m also homeless, and I have no one to rely on. If you come with me, then it will be the two of us depending on each other for survival, and I don’t want that, because the Immortal Lord is an uncertain factor.” She smiled faintly and said, “I’m not afraid of this kind of person or thing, I just don’t like it.”
“If it weren’t for you, Miss, I would be a lost soul by now. I can be yours, and I can stay by your side forever, as long as you are willing.” He slowly picked up a medicinal herb with his porcelain-white hand. Hearing her words, he was not confused at all and replied immediately.
His face remained calm and composed throughout, his smile seemingly inlaid with something, yet every expression was vivid, conveying warmth.
“I’m homeless. If you come with me, we might end up living a life of hardship.” She thought for a moment, but then added.
“I can support you, young lady.” He said without any hesitation, but then seemed to realize something was wrong and explained, “You should know that it is not difficult for a cultivator to support himself. I can guide you in your cultivation.”
Upon hearing this, she immediately smiled, and her complexion seemed to have improved: "I don't need the Immortal Lord to take care of me, but I'd like to see how the Immortal Lord will guide me in cultivation. Didn't the Immortal Lord lose his memory? How much of his former cultivation methods does he still remember?"
"I don't remember everything, just some recollection. But I can try. Unlike you, I don't dislike variables." Looking at her smiling face, his eyebrows curved like the moon in the sky.
“Then let’s give it a try. But there’s one more thing: what is the Immortal Lord’s name? Perhaps we can find someone we know?” she said.
“Yun Xianqing. That’s my name. Thank you for your kindness in trying to find me relatives, but since I woke up, I’ve been determined to repay you. Now I only want to follow you, so please don’t go to all that trouble to find me relatives.” He spoke more this time, and his tone was more serious, but he was still gentle and kind, like willow branches in spring gently brushing the water’s surface.
“Yun Xianqing. It sounds beautiful, befitting the demeanor of an immortal lord. It’s just that I’m not very knowledgeable and have never heard of this name before. If the immortal lord happens to become a variable, then I would be more than happy to accept it.” She murmured the three words over and over, the tone of her voice softening as if she were admiring him or his name.
Then she asked in a serious tone, "Immortal Lord, are you afraid of ghosts and monsters?"
Until yesterday, she finally found a place to live.
The place is spacious, with excellent natural light, and the scents of spring are growing freely in the yard.
Most importantly, the price is unbelievably low.
She took a liking to it at first sight.
However, despite all its merits, there is one major drawback.
It's haunted.
People have actually died. A whole bunch of people have died.
Fortunately, she wasn't afraid of ghosts. Mainly, she felt that if she were truly going to be killed by a ghost, she might as well not live. She hadn't done anything wrong.
Now it's even better. With a celestial being with her, her life is much safer.
Everything is ready; now all that's missing is for Yun Xianqing to say he's not afraid.
She stared intently at Yun Xianqing, awaiting his answer.
Yun Xianqing smiled, and the beauty mark beside his eye twitched slightly, making his face and his whole being look even more like a piece of beautiful jade.
Then she heard him say, "I'm scared."
As if afraid she hadn't heard him clearly, he repeated, "I'm terrified."
Before Meng Chiwan could react, she spoke first: "That's good then. Immortal Lord, you will be responsible for protecting me. Although you are still a patient, but..."
As she was speaking, she suddenly stopped and asked incredulously, "The Immortal Lord... even the Immortal Lord is afraid of ghosts?"
Then he met Yun Xianqing's indifferent pupils, in which something still flowed, like a mountain spring. He spoke each word clearly, without the slightest embarrassment: "Fear. In my limited memory, I should be afraid."
Her smile faded, and she said coldly, "That's alright. You'll get used to it eventually."
Then, on a bright spring day, under the midday sun, she and Yun Xianqing moved into the mansion located in the west of the city, carrying a large bag of medicinal herbs and luggage.
Ignoring her aunt and uncle's scolding, Ma Jianshan's insults, and the gossip around her, she and Yun Xianqing began to live a life that truly belonged to them.
In that dream, spring seemed to last forever.
On her first day after moving in, she planted a tree in the yard by herself, while Yun Xianqing was wiping the dust off the window with his sleeves rolled up. He turned around and looked at her with a smile.
But she was completely unaware.
She hoped in her heart that she could live on with this sapling and grow together into a towering giant.
Once the tree was planted, the noise from outside the yard could be heard.
She would never forget her aunt's harsh and shrill voice.
"I thought I'd snagged some rich and powerful husband, and now I don't even respect my elders!"
Before the person even arrived, the sound came from outside the open, airy door, and it sounded truly jarring.
"Get in here right now! What do you think she is?! How dare you let her threaten you. Haven't I told you long ago, she's just a dog in our house? Now that she's completely fallen out with her attitude, she's not even worth a puddle of mud on the ground!"
Before he could finish speaking, his aunt grabbed Ma Jianshan and went inside on her own. Judging from her figure, she did have a rather decisive and efficient manner.
"Mother! Slow down! I can walk by myself!" Ma Jianshan almost tripped over the threshold, but managed to break free and said urgently, panting heavily.
His aunt glanced at him, then twirled her fingers before stepping forward to approach Meng Chiwan, who was standing still and coldly watching the two of them. She raised her hand to slap her cheek.
But it didn't work.
Meng Chiwan dodged back, and a thick tree branch appeared in her hand at some point. She struck directly at her aunt's old, rough hand.
With a "whoosh," the bark-like hand twisted to the side, making a loud "smack" that made one's wrist ache.
"After being a shameless and treacherous bandit for over a decade, you've really started to think of yourself as a local tyrant?" She smiled, then struck again with her stick. "It's my fault, I pretended to be kind for a few years, which made my aunt forget my abilities and her own status. You're nothing but a rat in the gutter, who's more noble between you and your rat cub?"
With a creak, she looked up and saw Yun Xianqing calmly closing the door. Then, with gentle and clear eyes, she looked at her with a hint of appreciation on her face.
She smiled, nudged her aunt's shoulder with a wooden stick, causing her to fall to the ground, and then turned her gaze to Ma Jianshan standing to the side.
“Meng Chiwan! You, you dare to be so arrogant! I, I want to…” Ma Jianshan pointed at her with trembling fingertips, only knowing how to cry and howl, but he did not have the courage to resist in any way, or even to help his mother up from the ground.
"What are you going to do? Cry for your father or call for your grandfather? Or... do you want to go back to prison and taste the bitterness of your own kind?" She interrupted him, straightened up and approached him step by step, then kicked him. "Did you really think the Heartbreak Pill could be so easily neutralized?"
Ma Jianshan's round body was kicked to the ground, rolling once and leaving a grayish-white stain on his robe.
His appearance seemed to please her, and her smile widened. She bent down and said softly, "Stop dreaming. You still have more to suffer."
The tone of voice was like a slow knife cutting into flesh.
"You wretch! Aren't you afraid the authorities will arrest you!" Seeing her precious son being humiliated, the aunt on the ground began to thrash around again.
“Aunt, where would you get the chance to report to the authorities? My cousin’s poison hasn’t been cured yet. Perhaps he’s forgotten that I fed him more than one pill. The effects of the Heartbreak Pill haven’t even been completely neutralized yet, so what do you think we should do with the other one?” Meng Chiwan said softly, her hair falling over her shoulders bathed in sunlight, making her look as radiant as ever.
When Old Fang asked her why this was so serious, she didn't answer. It was because she had truly intended to kill him and had given Ma Jianshan two kinds of poison.
She tossed aside the stick, clapped her hands to wipe away the dust, and then glanced casually at Ma Jianshan, who was screaming for help on the ground, saying, "Don't waste your time. Nobody can hear you. Not to mention that there are hardly any neighbors around this haunted house, even if there were, they wouldn't hear you."
She looked up at Yun Xianqing, then asked with a smile, "Right, Immortal Lord?"
Yun Xianqing looked at her and smiled faintly. She reached out and touched the air, sensed the resistance, and then nodded.
It's a barrier.
He had already cleared away any obstacles for her before closing the door.
She looked at his pale face and pursed her lips with some worry.
But he still smiled, showing no sign of anything amiss.
"Close the door and catch the mouse," as the saying goes. She's quite good at that.
Like everyone else, once they were scared, they dared not come again.
She thought with considerable regret: when she had told Ma Jianshan something earlier, he hadn't listened to a single word. She had finally given him a word of advice, but who knew he would be so foolish.
A few days later, perhaps realizing that Ma Jianshan's poison was truly incurable, she received money and land deeds personally delivered to her door by her uncle.
Also sent was Ma Jianshan, whose face was ashen but whose expression was obsequious.
"Behave yourself. That's the only way to live a peaceful life."
When she was teaching Ma Jianshan a lesson, she had already thought about this situation. This was also her original plan to completely break away from her uncle's family, but now that she had met Yun Xianqing, everything went so smoothly.
But why her initial plan turned out to be a lose-lose situation was another thing she hadn't anticipated.
