Chapter 19 Saving you was out of instinct

Chapter 19 Saving you was out of instinct

She even started hallucinating, seeing Xu Qingmin's face everywhere. She felt as if she were in her senior year classroom, and Xu Qingmin was handing her a love letter. This time, she didn't reject him. Instead, she said to him, "Xu Qingmin, I like you too. No matter whose love letter it is, I like you."

On the brink of life and death, arguments, family differences, and personality clashes were nothing but dust to her. If she could get out of there alive, she would definitely marry Xu Qingmin, even if she could only be his wife for a second.

Suddenly there was a knock on the door.

As if in a final burst of energy, Mr. Bai used all his strength to open the door, and a firefighter appeared as if by divine intervention.

Just as the firefighters were about to carry Mr. Bai off the bus, he pointed in Song Yilin's direction and said, "Save that little girl first."

When the firefighters arrived at her side, Song Yilin was already completely unconscious.

I woke up again in the hospital.

When the nurse saw that she was awake, she said, "Little girl, you're awake! You're so lucky!"

Images from the fire replayed in my mind: "What happened to the uncle who was with me?"

The nurse gently pulled her back down, saying, "It's alright, you should rest."

It's good that you're alright, it's good that you're alright.

Where Song Yilin couldn't see, the nurse's eyelids drooped, and a tear rolled down her cheek.

Song Yilin stayed in the hospital for two days, then secretly ran away.

After knocking on the door for a long time, an auntie came out, who seemed to be Xu Qingmin's housekeeper.

"Who are you looking for, little girl?"

"I'm looking for Xu Qingmin."

Having just survived a brush with death, Song Yilin couldn't stop her tears from falling when she uttered Xu Qingmin's name. She didn't know how she had gotten through the past two days in the hospital, and she desperately needed a hug from Xu Qingmin.

"Young lady, please come back in a few days. Young Master Xu's grandfather is ill, and he has gone to the countryside to visit him."

Song Yilin left Xu Qingmin's house in a daze. This was her first time visiting Xu Qingmin's home.

People say that eating candy can cheer you up when you're in a bad mood.

As she passed a small shop, Song Yilin instinctively went inside. The shop's television was playing local news.

"On August 3, a major fire broke out in Fengxiang Community, Jiyang District, Jianghai City, caused by residents charging electric vehicles inside their homes. Six people were hospitalized and one person died."

Song Yilin's heart skipped a beat. She had clearly asked the nurse if Uncle Bai was alright, and although the nurse said he was, at this moment, her sixth sense told her that the one who had passed away was Uncle Bai.

Song Yilin rushed back to Fengxiang Community. The elderly people who usually danced in the community had stopped dancing. They looked serious and gathered together, pointing upstairs and discussing in hushed tones.

"Sister Ma, whose family died?"

"Old Bai from 601, such a good person, he inhaled too much smoke and there's no way to save him."

"Sigh, you know, Lao Bai has an elderly mother who is almost seventy years old and is waiting for him to take care of her. Lao Bai's wife has been sick for many years and can't work. His son's work was just starting to get better when he passed away."

"I heard that his son recently met a girlfriend and they bought a house in Yishi to prepare for their marriage. Lao Bai and his son paid the down payment, and Lao Bai paid the mortgage. But when the girl saw that the person paying the mortgage was gone, you can imagine what happened, they broke up."

"This girl is heartless. Even if she wanted to break up, she should have waited a while. She broke up with him right after his father passed away. Isn't that like stabbing him in the heart?"

"Isn't that girl afraid of being taken advantage of? Think about it, if Lao Bai were still alive, the family burden could be shared. Otherwise, once this girl marries in, not only will she have to pay the mortgage with Lao Bai's son, but she will also have to take care of her grandmother and mother-in-law, and help her mother-in-law inject insulin every day. Her mother-in-law also has kidney problems. No girl would be willing to do that."

"In my opinion, Lao Bai's son will never find a wife. Lao Bai's wife has a chronic illness and won't die anytime soon. His mother is also very healthy. She'll be a nanny and caregiver after she marries into the family, and she'll also have to pay such a high mortgage. What girl would want to marry into a family like that?"

"Alas, how pitiful. Such a good person, yet without good fortune."

Song Yilin's hands and feet were already getting cold as she listened to the elderly people in the neighborhood chatting amongst themselves.

When the firefighters went in, he still had the strength to point in her direction so that they could rescue her.

She asked the woman closest to her in a low voice, "Which funeral home is Uncle Bai's body in?"

The older woman was puzzled as to why a young girl would ask such a question, but then she thought that the girl might be a relative or something, so she told Song Yilin.

Song Yilin took a taxi to the funeral home. Bai Ye, dressed in mourning clothes, knelt in front of the mourning hall. Beside him were Bai Ye's wife, Cai Hong, who was crying so hard she was almost fainting, and Bai Ye's mother.

Bai Ye calmly greeted and saw off guests.

When Bai Ye saw that it was Song Yilin, he put on his clothes and bowed to her. After Song Yilin lit an incense stick, she knelt down with Bai Ye in front of the mourning hall.

Bai Ye looked at Song Yilin with a puzzled expression.

Song Yilin lowered her voice and said to Bai Ye, "Brother Ye, Uncle's last wish was for you to get married. In this final moment, let me, as Uncle's daughter-in-law, see him off and fulfill his dream."

Bai Ye lowered his voice and said, "Your intention is enough. You can go back now."

"Brother Ye, you don't need to send me back. I'm doing this for Uncle Bai, not for you."

Seeing the determination in Song Yilin's eyes, Bai Ye didn't insist that she go back. He brought her a mourning garment and said, "Thank you."

At that moment, Song Yilin saw that Bai Ye's eyes were red. He was grateful to her, while she felt guilty. If it weren't for Uncle Bai, she would be a pile of bones today.

Uncle Bai gave her a life, and she took on his responsibilities in his place.

After kneeling with Bai Ye at the funeral home for three days, Bai Ye squatted at the entrance of the funeral home after the funeral, looking bewildered.

Song Yilin knew that Bai Ye was currently confused about whether to return to Yishi to continue his career or stay at home to take care of his mother and grandmother. But even if he stayed at home, he would be too busy with work to take good care of his mother and grandmother.

Song Yilin squatted down in front of Bai Ye: "Brother Ye, marry me. I'll be your bride and take good care of your mother and grandmother for you."

Because of her, Bai Ye lost his bride, and she gave herself to Bai Ye in return.

Bai Ye patted her head: "Little girl, you're still young, don't say things like that."

“When I come back from school, I’ll be a senior. I’m not young anymore. I’ll go back to Yishi with you. You can work hard to pay off the mortgage, and I’ll take care of your mother and grandmother when I’m not in class.”

Bai Ye took it as a joke and got up to leave.

Song Yilin called out from behind, "Uncle Bai died because he saved me."

Bai Ye froze upon hearing this. He turned to look at Song Yilin, his eyes filled with sympathy and heartache, but not blame.

But the more Bai Ye acted this way, the more distressed Song Yilin felt.

“My dad probably saved you out of instinct. He would have saved anyone in trouble in front of him at that time. You don’t need to feel guilty. Go back and get a good night’s sleep. Tell yourself to let it go.”

After saying that, he left without looking back.

Song Yilin followed closely behind Bai Ye.
