Gu Shouxin and Cai Xiaolian glanced at Gu Nian suspiciously, then began to eat.
There were only three dishes on the table: wild vegetable and egg soup, stir-fried Chinese cabbage, and stewed pork with soybeans.
There was no staple food, just eggs, which were the same ones that Cai Xiaolian had cooked before.
Apart from Gu Xin, the other three found it difficult to swallow.
Gu Xin peeled two eggs for herself, three for Gu Nian, four for Gu Shouxin, and three for Cai Xiaolian. Then she said, "Dad, this meat was given to us by Fourth Uncle before. You weren't home then. Dad, did you render the oil when you cooked the meat?"
She had never seen her father cook, so she didn't know if he knew how to render oil.
Gu Shouxin picked up an egg from his bowl and put it into Gu Xin's bowl, saying, "I boiled it and put it in the oil jar. What are you doing? Three is enough for Dad. From now on, we'll all eat together whatever we have at home. Don't say you're too small to eat. You're growing and you can't not eat!"
Peeled eggs are still easy to pick up with chopsticks.
Gu Xin didn't refuse; she liked her father like this: "Thank you, Dad!"
If Cai Xiaolian and Gu Nian weren't really hungry, they really wouldn't have been able to eat this kind of food.
Just after we finished eating, Gu En from the eldest branch of the family came over again: "Second Uncle, Grandpa and Grandma want you to come over."
"Oh, I understand." Gu Shouxin calmly got up, told Gu Xin to put the bowl down, and said he would come back to wash it in a little while before leaving.
After Gu Shouxin left, only the three of them, including the mother, were left in the kitchen.
Because she was afraid that Gu Nian would notice something was different, Cai Xiaolian remained silent. At the same time, she also felt that Gu Nian was somewhat different from the original owner's memories. Of course, she couldn't rule out the possibility that she had just hit her head.
Gu Nian felt the same way as Cai Xiaolian, so neither of them said much.
"Mom, Sister, you bumped your heads just now, you must be feeling unwell! You should go and rest. I'll sneak over to Grandpa and Grandma's to see if Grandma's going to beat Dad again. If she hits him hard, I'll speak up for him. Dad just said he won't gamble anymore." Gu Xin was completely unaware of Cai Xiaolian and Gu Nian's deep-seated worries.
"Oh," Cai Xiaolian and Gu Nian answered in unison, then went back to their room.
Gu Xin didn't notice anything unusual. She washed the bowl herself while the hot water in the pot was still warm, then carried her little bamboo basket on her back and went out.
It's winter now, and her daily task is to go up the mountain to carry firewood, which consists of withered yellow leaves and some dry branches.
She planned to go to the old house first. If her grandmother wanted to beat her father, she would plead for him. If not, she would go to the back mountain and carry back some firewood.
Their home was located at the foot of the mountain, not far from the old house, but it was still some distance away from other houses in the village, so they didn't encounter many people along the way.
As they approached the old house, Gu Xin ran into her cousin Gu Hui from the eldest branch of the family, who greeted her: "Er Ya, what are you doing?"
Gu Xin asked, "Sister Huihui, did Grandma hit my dad?"
Gu Hui said with a surprised look, "No, that's strange. Grandma had found all the things, but after Uncle said a few words, Grandma stopped breathing and even asked Uncle to come inside to talk."
Gu Xin breathed a sigh of relief: "That's good. Dad must have assured Grandpa and Grandma that he wouldn't gamble anymore, so I don't need to go help. Sister Huihui, I'm going to get some leaves and firewood. Do you want to go to the back mountain?"
