The Gu family's old house.
Grandma Gu ate a piece of cake that had cooled down. After Cai Xiaolian explained her purpose, she asked, "Is this the small business you mentioned yesterday?"
"Well, I guess so! But Niannian has come up with something else. Mother, what do you think of this? A pastry made with eggs, Niannian says it should be called a cake." Cai Xiaolian didn't explain that this wasn't what she was talking about yesterday.
"It melts in your mouth and has a wonderful aroma. The eggy smell is gone, and the sweetness is just right. If it were me, I would buy it," Grandpa Gu said.
"Second sister-in-law, Niannian is really capable! I thought she could only embroider and couldn't do housework! This will definitely sell well," said Gu Laosi.
“If Second Aunt goes to town to sell things, I’ll go with you! There are a lot of thugs in town, especially Second Uncle. He’s close to thugs, who knows if they’ll pay you!” Gu Hui was more direct, and didn’t hesitate to expose the original owner Gu Shouxin.
Gu Xin wanted to say that her older sister was also very strong, but when she thought of how her eldest cousin usually beat up the boys in the village who bullied her until they cried loudly, she didn't say it.
The locals all say the old house is good and worth selling.
They were unsure about the price, since there was no such food in town. If the price was too low, they would have worked for nothing. If the price was too high, they were afraid they wouldn't be able to sell it.
Cai Xiaolian and Gu Xin sat in the old house for a long time, until it got dark, but they still hadn't gotten a reference price, so they had to walk back on their straw stalks.
When I got back, I saw an oxcart at the gate, and people were getting off. When I got closer, I saw that it was Gu Shouxin.
"You're back!"
"Dad, you're back!"
The mother and daughter were both a little surprised. Wasn't it supposed to take three days, with the earliest arrival being tomorrow noon?
"Yes, everything's done, so we came back. Did you go to the old house?" Gu Shouxin felt a surge of warmth in his heart when he saw his wife and daughter carrying hemp stalks.
He dreamed of someone waiting for him when he came home at night, even in his past life.
Not a servant, but his closest confidant.
Now it's come true. Although it's still uncertain whether the four of them will be his closest relatives, he genuinely wants to treat the mother and her two daughters as his closest relatives.
"Hmm, Niannian made some food, and we brought it over. We chatted for a while, and then it got dark. Oh, you bought something too? Niannian, open the door quickly!" Cai Xiaolian shone a stalk of straw and saw that the empty bamboo baskets on the oxcart were filled with packages of things.
"Okay, let's go inside and talk. It's cold outside." Gu Shouxin nodded.
Gu Nian opened the door and helped carry the things, baskets and all, inside. Then Gu Shouxin drove the oxcart to the old house to return them.
When Gu Shouxin returned, Cai Xiaolian and Gu Nian had already lit three oil lamps in the main room. If Gu Xin hadn't stopped them, they would have lit more, since Gu Shouxin had bought a whole bucket of lamp oil.
“Dad, you haven’t eaten yet! We haven’t eaten either, let’s eat first and then come over to look at the things, I’m a little hungry,” Gu Nian suggested.
"Okay, I'll go wash my hands!" Gu Shouxin nodded.
Gu Nian went to the kitchen to set the table.
All the rice from before had been milled, and the rice that Gu Laosi bought in the afternoon had also been milled, so Gu Nian didn't cook rice. Instead, she steamed radish and meat buns, made cucumber and egg soup, stir-fried green peppers and shredded pork, and made a stir-fried cabbage.
There were plenty of steamed buns; even if we didn't know Gu Shouxin would be back tonight, there would still be enough for us to eat.
When all three oil lamps were brought to the kitchen, there were now four, making the kitchen much brighter.
